Reality television isn't real? I can't believe I found out about this and Santa Claus in the same week.

2012-06-13 10:18:04 AM
...and unfortunately the characters on Jersey Shore aren't CGI.

They only get $500? For how many hours of filming?

Fark that noise.

My cousin was on Property Virgins. They had already picked a house and started the process. The producers had them walk through two other houses they found in order to make a show out of it. In the end, they picked the house they were already buying.

A childhood friend was on House Hunters not too long ago....but I haven't spoken with him in a very long time, so I have no idea about the details.

/It was the episode where a couple was moving from Tampa to Austin.
//On Facebook, he confessed that he looked like a jackass for complaining that each house didn't have a proper spot for his TV.

Every time I come across one of these house-hunting shows, inevitably I'll see a house with rooms big enough to host a NASCAR race and then the couple featured in the episode will go 'Well, it's a little small...' and then I throw things.

No granite countertops.

Can't see my table in this dining room...

Faked reality show..

Who would have thought of that?

Next thing you know, they'll say Jerry Springer and Steve Wilkos are scripted...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

CSB: Gator Boys showed up in our neighborhood a few weeks ago to "catch a gator". Thing is, after talking to the producers for a few minutes they admitted they brought 3 other gators with them to shoot scenes. I'm not even sure they even caught the gator that had been in our inlet because we had another gator sighting later in the week.

CSB time...

My friend was on House Hunters last year; I helped her make the audition tape. She had basically done all the major stuff necessary to get a new place, but figured she could use the monetary boost from being on the show. She's pretty smart, so I'm sure she had no illusions that HH would be anything close to "real".

There was one instance where her, two other friends, and I were filmed having lunch at a restaurant (the scene didn't make it into the show-- probably because my roommate couldn't stop looking at the damn camera). Our dialogue was coached-- we didn't have lines, but we were encouraged to talk about certain things in a "natural-sounding" way. Also, we couldn't wear shirts with logos, which makes sense.

For their part, the three-person crew-- the producer, and two cameramen-- were exceedingly nice, and all the food and drinks were comped (it was a pretty nice restaurant). All told, it was apparently 10 hours of filming for my friend over the course of one weekend. For $500, 10 hours of walking around with your friends, saying silly but harmless things on camera, isn't too bad.

Biggest jackass on House Hunters was the lady who said "I don't like the color, but at least it's granite"

My mother loves this show. She DVRs shows and holds on to them for weeks. I don't think i'll share this info with her. Let her be happy and oblivious...unless she makes me angry, then i'll burst that bubble.

I, too, get annoyed with the people on the show. "I don't like the color of this room..." It's called paint, get thyself to Lowe's and change it!

When my friends were on cupcake wars, it wasn't so much that i was surprised it was mostly scripted and pre-planned, but i was confused as to *why* some of it was faked. Why say some phony carpenter built a big display when the contestants really did it? Why rob them of recognition for that?

2012-06-13 01:01:07 PM
"Love It or List It" is also a giant mountain of fake.

/Still watch the end part to see the "before and after" upgrades of the current house.

yeah, even the hosts on those shows are like "paint is cheap and easy"

we just bought a brand new house, and it's one of those deals where they put in some of the extras (granite in the kitchen, "custom" cabinets, etc), but they save costs/money by not offering any buyers upgrades. ALL the walls are white, and coming from white wall apartment living we're sick of that...but we know that we can paint any color we want 1 room at a time as we have money/time

That wouldn't strike me as jackassy; where a TV would be located in a room that for all practical purposes is usually devoted to watching TV is a somewhat important feature. Kinda like if a kitchen didn't have space for a fridge.

/I'm personally holding on to the hope that a stranger will approach me in Lowe's and offer to completely redo my backyard or bathroom for free.

My wife hates that show about creating a rental property or space on your home...she says the host feels like a disingenuous pr#@k.

We used to watch Property Virgins, and make fun of some of the people, mostly the coont women with some unreasonable demands on a first property.

How about a reality show such as Iron Chef? The chefs are certainly cooking the food within the prescribed time limit. I imagine that's about as "real" as reality TV gets.

FAUX SHO!

2012-06-13 01:12:52 PM
I think the contract also states that the house hunters have to demand:

1. Granite countertops

2. Stainless steel appliances.

3. Double sinks in the master bath (even though the house has more than one bathroom and there is no logical reason why one of them couldn't JUST USE THE OTHER BATHROOM!

Yes, these little fake things piss me off.

2012-06-13 01:19:22 PM
Next someone is going to tell me that the people who walk into the Gold & Silver pawnshop aren't actually random walk-ins, that Rick and crew already know what's coming, and that they're briefed on a bit of history behind the item/type so that they can do a bit of exposition for the cameras. And some of the people who come in with extremely rare and expensive items have no intention of selling at all. Say it ain't so.

Yeah, wake me when they are faking Parisian apartment buildings dating back to the 18th century...

I kind of feel the same way, but at least he was honest about how he felt he came off on the show.

/Agree that TV space is important.
//My condo has a cubby hole above the fireplace, and it only has enough room for an older 27" TV.
///Had to mount a bracket off to the side for my 46".
////Use the cubby hole for the cable box and Blu-Ray player.

2012-06-13 01:23:00 PM
I actually feel a little better about this as most of the people on it come off as either stupid, vapid or douchey.

2012-06-13 01:23:02 PM
1) I had assumed it was somewhat fake, but didn't guess they were all actually closing on a house and the other properties were just whatever could be filmed nearby -- whether for sale or not.

2) Only $500?!?! Would have guessed they got at least a few thousand.

Don't watch the domestic version, but love the House Hunters International for a glimpse of foreign real estate/real estate markets.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention that I miss "Monster House".

/Loved the episode where this "electrician" had about as much experience in that field as I do.

IIRC there's a Farker who works at a gator farm and one of the more old and tired lizards they have has been on that show multiple times.
