How many bodyguards will be needed to protect the backpacker walking down alleys and through jungles?

It'd be fun to set up a Jeep with their camera system and run it up the Rubicon Trail

/if they haven't already

I wonder if they'd pay someone to hike the AT.
/I'd totally settle for their internship pay-rate.

Question #1: Does it come with the girl?

Question #2: Am I the only one that feels bad that she has to wear that in heels?

Holy crap! It's Sumi Das from the old TechTV/ZDTV days!

Man I miss those days... back when they actually had some smart women that did more than just read a teleprompter and try to act like they're interested.

So, if the gov't were doing this, it would be OK, right?

Last month google put the old part that doest have cars section of jerusalem up, pretty sweet. I think streetview is one of the coolest things I have witnessed in my life. Not saying it replaces a vacation, but just nifty if you are into architecture and cities in general. How apple can compete without streetview is beyond me. 3d downtowns have been around since flight simulator 98 it seems.

I find this pretty cool really. I often map out certain places where I'm going on holiday with googlemaps if I'm looking for something in particular. And there have been quite a few instances where the ground level view stops at certain places. Like small side streets or places with lots of steps. It'll be great to see everything.

I wouldn't want to be one of the people having to carry that though. 40lbs and the weight probably isn't terribly well distributed either. I can't imagine that one person will be carrying it for any great distance. My backpack with camera gear starts to get a little uncomfortable after about 3km and that probably only weighs about 15-20lbs at most.

I think the usual euphemism is "hills, valleys, and back alley".

I'm sure they will go out as a team - ideally with the other hikers carrying food/water/camping supplies out of range of the cameras. Tell you what Google, you want to pay me the same as my employer I will carry that thing all over the national parks for you.

You know that alleys aren't actually like the ones in musicals and action movies, right? They're basically just tiny streets?

I've been in many alleys in many different cities. Thanks for your input, though.

Would they be sticking to public places and making the resulting data available as Public Domain since I'd be paying for it? If so, sure.

I can't wait for this - Lots and lots of public rights-of-way in the UK are too small for google map's cars (which means they have not existed) Let's hope that this means lots of such tiny streets, and footpaths (Think hillwalking in the lake district) get put in and then hipsters can get outside and enjoy the beauty of nature.
