MBooda: FTA: ricochet bullet

Approves use of noun as adjective:

Came for the bing, bing, BING!

It didn't end in rape. Subby is a liar.

2012-06-13 03:01:13 PM
It could have gone up his nose (he flinched, tilting his head back) and he, gasping in surprise, inhaled it and it choked him.

What? It could happen!

2012-06-13 03:16:32 PM
I'm not doubting you can get killed from a ricochet, I'm just wondering how close he was standing to the damn thing. I'm assuming they were all expecting a nice big boom... would he have died anyway?

2012-06-13 03:22:15 PM
That's the kind of mistake you can only make once. :(

2012-06-13 03:22:36 PM
I read that as bukake.

Ah, Shoot The Fuel Tank. One of my favorite movie gun tropes.

Right up there with "This thin plywood will provide adequate cover from bullets!" and Hollywood silencers.

2012-06-13 03:54:26 PM

ZAZ: That's not predictable. A big explosion is predictable.

This. Although now that I think about it perhaps the predictable part is that he died. I guess maybe the headline works after all.

2012-06-13 04:01:40 PM
So he didn't have to wait for the ricochet then.

Remember the Alamo, Texas boy!

Just like in the video game when the announcer blurts out, Head Shot!

AiryAnne: Remember the Alamo, Texas boy!

That's funnier when you realize the deceased and his whole family are illegal aliens. According to Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino, anyway, and I suppose he'd know about illegal aliens.

And I'm just guessing, based on the fact that they're within 250 miles of the Mexican border, and their surname is Torres...

Sly Norweigians, always overstaying their visas and changing their names to blend in. Figures they'd want o settle down someplace warm after freezing their asses off their whole life.

Eye shot! There was a girl in Boston who died from one of those cop pepper balls and that was a ~280fps paintball never mind a jacketed lead slug.

/has done the shoot the fuel tank, long range with a flame source. It makes a nice fireball. A better one is just put the thing in a firepit and run.
/don't do that for real, people have died doing that

2012-06-13 04:49:54 PM
I can't see a 180 degree ricochet. They are lead and will flatten and fragment.

2012-06-13 05:14:26 PM
"(treh-VEEN'-yoh)" ? That's the first time I've seen a newspaper article providing pronunciation before.

Would like to see follow-up story with coroners report as to what the bullet looked like.

MythDragon

I have a gun that uses clips.

And I have to take the clip out before I can fire it.

Really? You don't leave the stripper clip in there all the time? :-|

Nice broomhandle, btw.

Glad the article included a phonetic spelling of "Trevino"

aaeko: Glad the article included a phonetic spelling of "Trevino"

Based on that pronunciation, shouldn't it be spelled Treviño?

That's the first time I've seen a newspaper article providing pronunciation before.

I've seen it many times. It's an AP story. Radio stations read wire service stories on the air. A human newspaper editor would remove the pronunciation.

2012-06-13 05:36:56 PM
The kid died. That's the predictable outcome of this kind of stupidity. Granted it was a ricochet death and not an exploding death, but it was still death.

Odd Bird: True story: I shot a BB at a trailer tire, turned around and the BB hit me in butt.

/CSB? I leave that to you to decide.

Did you burst into flames afterwards? "The Final Sacrifice" taught me that humans burst into flames when shot in the butt.

I was out shooting with a couple of my friends one winter day in Northern California. We were shooting my friend's new .45 semiauto at bottles placed upon a fence post, on my property. We ran out of bottles, and were just shooting the fence post, when either my friend hit a knot, or the post was frozen (it was less than 20 degrees) and he spun and fell to the ground shouting, "Oh fark, I'm hit!".

We thought he was joking, but we turned him over, and imbedded in his blue jeans was a spent, flattened .45 ball. It punched through the jeans, but not his skivvies. It bruised him from hip to thigh, and was directly over his femoral artery. Any more penetration, and he probably would have bled to death, as my property is a good half-hour from a paved road. As it was, he got a good bruise and a story to tell his grandchildren. He wears that bullet on a chain around his neck now.

One of the first things any decent gun safety course tells you is never shoot trees. Or especially cured posts.

Unless you're Josey Wales practicing to kill Kansas Redlegs, then it's OK.

I'm glad they described the handgun as "semiautomatic", so we don't confuse it with all of those "automatic" .380 handguns!

Whew, I can sleep easy.

Yeah.
Such an opportunity for a trolling/confusing headline is wasted.

I am dissapoint.

Cyclometh: Pochas: I detect foul play. Mythbusters did this once and determine there is no way for a person to kill themselves with a ricochet, as the bullet always loses too much energy after the impact.

Eh, as much as I love Mythbusters, they're not exactly the final word on such matters. I can come up with a ton of ways a low-velocity ricochet could kill you. Start with hitting you in the temple, the eye, the ear... it wouldn't even have to penetrate. You can get a hematoma from a knock upside the head that could kill you right quick.

Freak accidents do occur. Ricochets are highly unlikely to kill you, but they have done so.

Yeah, I love how mythbusters sometimes go "myth busted!."
"but you know what? This actually happened some x years ago"

Just because they couldn't recreate something doesn't mean it never happened. Freak accidents happen.

/especially at the circus where the bearded lady and her friends are

I knew .380 was weak but damn.

Here is a butane tank.

JesseL: In my misspent youth my friends and I learned that if you want to make a tank of propane (or something similar) do anything interesting you have to hit it once with a normal round to rupture the tank and immediately follow up with an incendiary round to ignite the escaping gas.

Usually this requires two shooters because it's tricky to get the second shot off fast enough when only one person is shooting and the gas cloud dissipates rapidly.

Just rupturing the tank with the incendiary round won't do it because the gas won't have any time to mix with atmospheric oxygen before the sparks are gone.

Amateurs. Everyone knows you just duct tape a road flare to the tank, light it, get into position, and shoot the tank with a rifle. And you do this with a tank that is empty, the leftover gas will let out a ball of fire without fragmenting the tank.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: One of the first things any decent gun safety course tells you is never shoot trees. Or especially cured posts.

If that's one of the first things a gun safety course teaches you, I'd question the instructor's knowledge of the subject matter. These may vary a bit, but the top three rules I learned were

1. Treat every gun as if it were loaded
2. Always point a gun in a safe direction
3. Be sure of your target...and beyond

"Never shoot trees. Or especially cured posts." wouldn't make my top 100. In fact, it would probably get rolled up under #4, which is "Don't be a dumbass."

/Maybe you were joking.

Actually, you're both right. It was stupid, and I was never taught that in any safety class, civilian or military. I'm still kinda sheepish about admitting my role in that particular shenanigan.

This from the Washington Post, April 27, 2010, regarding Gov Rick Perry's famous coyote incident.

"Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger - loaded with hollow-point bullets - when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes."

Ruger LCP FTW!

Rick Perry showing his green side, from the same article:

The governor left the coyote where it fell.
"He became mulch," Perry said."

and TFA: Texas gov. shoots, kills 'wily' coyote during jog

misterfweem: PsyLord: First guess was ricochet. Second guess was a kaboom.

/where's the earth shattering kaboom?

That only happens if you're shooting at an illudium Pu-36 explosive space modulator.

It may also happen if you are, or have ever been, a robot.
