Mr. Shabooboo: As someone watching Goodfellas, I'm getting a kick..Seriously..It just happened to be on!

Actually, I think Karen was sort of a sympathetic character in Goodfellas..Though she is complicit in
the crime, she really did care for Henry. She paid the price while he was in prison and having to
go on the run into the witness protection program, looking over her shoulder, etc...As they showed, once
your in that life, there is no way out except to die.

Meh. She liked the life as much as anyone. But it is still one of the few gangster films where the women are more than wallpaper. Pesci's ma (grandma?) wishing him well when he went off to get "made" FTW

It is now believed the Spider story was fabricated by hill. The police never found a birth certificate or family or friends who had eve heard of the man. A lot of Hill's drug and alcohol infused memories may not be based in reality.

robmilmel: Henry forgot the two greatest things in life- never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut.

Kinda surprised he was allowed to live after that.

Three things: Never rat on your friends; always keep your mouth shut and, above all else, DON'T GET CAUGHT.

Of course the first rule of Goodfellas Club is only stupid people get caught, 'cause they're disorganized. Henry was organized.

I came here for this and read the rest of the thread with yakity-sax in my head.

I think goodfellas could have improved if it were used in place of all the songs in the soundtrack. Think about it - speed up all the crap Henry has to do the day he was busted- cutting the coke with quinine, driving Lois bird to get her lucky hat, taking his brother to the doctor, keeping the sauce from getting too think, and play yakity-sax over it. It's perfect. Don't know why Scorsese didnt do that. The rights to yakity-sax must have been too high so he went with plan B.

He never went on the straight and narrow.

I have a buddy who helped him out with some business concerns and the stories I would here.

He would book Henry to give dinners for people, Henry would cook and tell stories about his life, at around 200 dollar a person. A pretty good idea. However, Henry would arrive tanked and coked up, burn the food, start fights, and insult everyone.

The last dinner my buddy did with him, Henry showed up with a methed up hooker who pulled a straight razor on my buddy for telling her to shut up, and his words were"and the next thing I knew I was hanging a hooker from a third story balcony by her ankles until she dropped the blade".

The last few years he had taken to buying old crap at garage sales, autographing it, saying it was his and selling it on Ebay.

i had the pleasure of talking to him on the phone once, funny guy, but he was a douche and a thief until the bitter end.

That movie has so many good scenes but the "Layla" scene is one of the best, it's the only thing I think of when I hear that song. Goodfellas really should have cleaned up at the Oscars, it is a better film than "The Departed".

He did a Q&A at a showing of Goodfellas here last month. I didn't go, but everyone I talked to about it said he was hammered, but an amazing storyteller. Again, being entertaining does not excuse the fact that he was a murderer.

I would have preferred that be the story.

Some of the real life stories are amazing. My favorite is the bit where he was being interogated after finally getting busted and told that if he didn't tell everything, he would never get to witness protection. He tells the police about the college basketball shaving and completely surprised the police. Never made the movie.

I introduced my 12-year-old son to Goodfellas a few months ago...when that part of the movie started, he heard "What Is Life" and asked if it was "My Sweet Lord" - he actually got that it was a George Harrison song before the lyrics even started...which kinda freaked me out.

Not relevant - just proud.

Not only do I love this movie, I love the book it's based on. I highly recommend Wiseguy, which was just released in a new edition. Not only does the movie follow the actual events pretty well, but there's a lot more things that were going on than we saw in the movie. The best part is how Henry Hill spent those years in prison, and he manipulated the system so much that he was essentially out a year before he was scheduled to be released. The movie made a few changes, obviously, but you'll be shocked by what was 100% accurate. (Like the guy needing two days to thaw out before the autopsy.)

Great book, even better movie.
