I remember when the local Sheriff's Dept was searching the Delta-Mendota canal for a kidnap suspect and the toddler he took, they pulled up six or seven stolen vehicles before they found the suspect's car. Unfortunately, the douchebag and the child were still in it.

/Delta-Mendota is the canal that allows southern California to steal northern California's water resources.

about 20 years ago there was a long dry spell in eastern Kentucky and lots of the water level in small ponds and lakes dropped. This revealed lots of abandoned cars all over the area. They sent the KY National Guard in to remove the cars and they used a portable car crusher and then hauled off the cars. They ended up with well over 100 cars, most of which had been reported stolen in northern KY and parts of Ohio. The guard concluded that people stole the cars to use for a trip back home.

On almost a regular basis, Flint lowers the Flint river level to search for stolen cars. While they have it down scrappers are allowed to pull out all the junk they want. So much scrap is pulled out, it causes a dip in metal prices.

May one presume that a car submerged in a lake even for a short time, e.g., less than an hour, is a total loss? Suppose you replaced seats and carpeting and headliner? Does that help?

OK, suppose it's so old it has no "electronics" in it except the battery and lights? Does THAT make a difference?

signed, JUST WONDERING

Water damage is the deal breaker for insurers. It's hard take EVERYTHING apart and guarantee that there isn't some mold still in a vent or that could compromise something down the line. It can be purchased from the junkyard but the title will practically scream water damage.

An old car without computers would fare a bit better than a modern car but would still be screwed. The issue isnt the seats, carpeting, etc.. Its the water trapped in all the little crevices that you cant get at. Sure, you might get it running again (even a computer controlled car) but you will have an endless series of electrical issues from then on. The only way to salvage a car that has been in the water would be to strip it completely, subject the body to an acid bath, priming, etc. Then reassemble the thing with all new parts and wiring. Not worth it unless you have some very rare collectable.

Thanks. Something was telling me that a 1931 Model A might be somewhat more salvageable than a 1991 Impala. If you just wanted something that would run.

It's a V8 BMW from the late 90's/early 2000's. The car itself is well under $20K & surprisingly cheap to insure. Tons of fun to drive too. Maintenance & fuel costs, however...
