Because things are more complicated than dreamed of in your simplistic analysis. You could just as easily ask of Democratic voters, "how do you explain people who are white voting for a party that routinely awards spoils to favoured minority groups?" See how easy it is to create stereotypes?

My own opinion (as a foreigner) of the Republicans BTW is that they are only marginally less destructive to the economy and society of the US than the Democrats are, but then again I am making this criticism from the perspective of what the mainstream media in its wisdom is pleased to call "the far right". I happen to believe that the US under its current political system is f*cked no matter who wins its elections, because both parties are in favour of spending inconceivably vast amounts of money they cannot possibly repay, while at the same time encouraging (to varying degrees) a multiplicity of mutually- incompatible special interest groups to seek their own advantage at the expense of the country as a whole. On the day when there will finally be no more money to pay off the special interests, the US will collapse under its own weight; but after that it will hopefully be able to rise again as a great country on the strength of its hard work and resources. Let's hope that the collapse and subsequent renewal happen soon.

Funny story, In the summer of 1989 I was visiting my family in Belfast, including my granny who was a genuine old- school Communist and she and I got into a huge row about the Berlin Wall (still standing at that time, of course); when I asked her why, if the Communist system was superior, they needed to imprison their citizens she furiously replied that the Wall was there to keep the capitalist Westerners out! When I made fun of her for saying such a ridiculous thing she actually physically attacked me, tho' not in a way to do much damage of course -- I was 18 at the time and she was 60ish. She was a crazy old b*tch (tho' God rest her soul for all that), but it has to be said that her response to losing an argument wasn't very much different from that of the more Leftish contributors on Fark.
