Hmmm... I wonder how people would judge me based on the Dan Posts I wear all the time.

All I will say is that I found that you can indeed do that once you start wearing those shoes.

I must be in the unidentifiable 10%. I doubt you would look at my flip flops and deduce that I actually do really well, at a great company.

Luckily we just have no dress code.

Fliegan: The only time I ever judge a person by their shoes is when looking for a new apartment. If the landlord wears scruffy shoes (especially if they have holes in them), he will not maintain the property well.

/Holes in the shoes means duct tape to fix ... everything

Or maybe he takes such pride in his work and is always fixing things up that he doesn't have time to run to Shopko for a new pair.

kellynoel: Canton: Hah. Well, that's really not far off. Sneakers frequently come untied for me, unless I remember to double knot them. Then they never come untied and eventually become slip-ons...

After a while, that gets frustrating.

That is exactly what your shoes convey. LOL.

A learned hatred of uncooperative laces, plus an element of practicality?

Ed Finnerty: 99% of subjective studies using percentages as results are meaningless.

I'm not about to take the time to download and read the paper, but I would presume the authors also provide statistics on the number or proportion of study subjects who guessed (determined?) what proportion of the self-reported personal characteristics of the volunteers.

Plus, this line sheds a little light on the issue:
Participants were able to most accurately judge a person's age, gender and income followed by their emotional stability and agreeableness.

So, people can tell a person's age, gender (surprise!!) and income by the style and condition of their shoes. Gender is almost a giveaway, so I'm surprised it was second after age. If you're knowledgeable about footwear, guessing income should be relatively easy as well, considering that footwear is a consumer good. But, again, the numbers from the study would be more interesting than the generalized statement in TFA.

I usually wear blue Dr. Scholl's brand sandals, black slip on sneakers, or black ballet flats. Mostly I think my shoe collection yells "flat feet!"

Not surprisingly, liberal thinkers, who many think of as flip-flop wearing hippies, wear shabbier and less expensive shoes.

Or you could just be a guy like me who gets to work from home in a place with nice weather, so I wear good leather sandals about 90% of the time.

I do, but I haven't ridden in years and when I did, I rode English. That's not where the name comes from.

It comes from this

Tevas when it's hot, Merrells when it isn't, and combat boots when it's cold or wet.

That probably doesnt say nearly as much about me as the fact that I do own a pair of dress shoes, but I have no idea where they are.

Nope ... never experienced that. Would be nice though. I've had landlords use duct tape to "repair" a broken window pane, a running toilet, crumbling plaster and peeling paint. All of those guys wore leather deck shoes with holes in them.

Took me a while to learn that lesson. Silly me.

You may have a penchant for shopping at Wal*Mart, and do not care what anybody says. You value comfort over fashion, and may also dislike tying your shoes.

Me too. They last forever and take abuse. I used to have a pair of sued ones that looked like work shoes. I wore them for 5 years until they wore out. I replaced them with a crappy pair of "nicer" looking shoes. They didnt last a year and a half.

I wear all leather shoes because I am alergic to foam rubber.

what else does that say because it is difficult to find such shoes.
