The first time I ever got electrocuted really well was installing a PC lab for the US Navy in 1988. A shiny new Academy Grad decided my red tag was something he didn't need to abide by, and flipped the circuit while I had my hands on a live lead.

Anyone with more knowledge than me of Civ II care to explain how he may have both avoided all of the win conditions while also allowing the AI to remain strong enough to force a stalemate? In most 4X games I've played, by the time you get near the top of the tech tree the other factions are either broke or ruined by war. If the AI wins, it's early game.

Headline should read: "Man plays videogame"

While it's interesting in an "I used to love Civ 2" sense, I'm pretty sure that the normally fluff-laden Huffington Post just got even fluffier.

So wait. The war continues because he signs a peace treaty with the vikings, only for them to pearl harbor him with nukes immediately after? Is this man spineless? Attack them first! Wipe the vikings out by forming an alliance with I assume America(he ID's them as the remaining other nation if I read that right). The only way to end a 3 way stalemate is to make it a 2 on 1. Clearly the vikings aren't playing ball with the other nation, so you should in an effort to rid the world of the viking horde. Not rocket science man. One faction cant possibly fight on 2 fronts in this world of sparse resources.

You don't need to force a stalemate to play beyond the end date (2100 in Civ II, as I recall), the game has a "wait... just one more turn" option.

So, was there no "LO" in the "LOTO" procedure?

Seriously wondering - I know we have used an actual breaker/power lock out failsafe for the past 15-20 years, but maybe not then?

I used to think I was addicted to that game investing months into a single game, only to start anew immediately cuz "this time I'll do it better." Now I see I wasn't even scratching the surface of Civ-devotion.

That makes sense. So he may have long ago 'won' the game by fulfilling a victory condition, and then just kept playing.

I suppose on a long enough timeline the AI would reach the top of the tech tree as well, and depending on how you play, may have enough resources to cause problems down the line.

Not having played Civ II for a long time, I'm guessing you can purposefully avoid the win conditions to keep the game running for a long time. I know you can do that in Master of Magic (By not casting spell of mastery / allowing other wizards to cast spell of mastery).

No locks. Just a set of pretty standard 15W breakers with tags on them.

in the military you "red tag" circuits that you don't want thrown, and it's a pretty serious offense if you violate one. You have to sign the tag out, have it witnessed as it's hung, and the only two people authorized to remove it are the Commanding Officer and the guy that hung it. Blowing one off can get people killed. I've been shoulder deep in impeller blades protected by nothing other than those red tags, so the people that depend on them take them pretty seriously. Mr. Brand New Ensign Dumbshiat didn't, and ended up electrocuting me. It grounded out through my elbow and blew a hole in my shirt.

In six years in the Navy, I only had tags blown off twice, and one of them caused me an injury. The other time I caught before someone else got hurt.

Anyway, point is, we played the shiat outta that game. Then we got Harpoon, and never went back.

A. Is this really a surprise?
B. So? I and everyone I could possibly know will be dead by then.
C. Why do we think we're the end of the evolutionary line?

If you believe in evolution (don't worry, I do) then a decimation of our species is almost guaranteed at some point. The fact we would do it to ourselves only makes sense. Enjoy the ride until then.

"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that he may never truly die.Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."
