Almost all of the TLDs in the article sound like they'd only be useful to Russian scammers trying to skim credit card info with fake services.

And, like commodities traders they add nothing of value while jacking up the price for the rest of us. They should all be hung.

I'm headed to Prague on Saturday to setup the network to support their next meeting. I expect this one to be pretty fun...

Personally, I don't really see it mattering all that much, at least in regards to websites: pretty much everyone uses search engines to find sites so one's choice of TLD doesn't matter.

Pretty much any non-com/net/org (and possibly .info) gTLDs are useless. When's the last time you saw ".museum" or ".aero" being used? ".jobs" is also silly: I saw a billboard advertising employment opportunities at GEICO and it listed the site "www.geico.jobs", which redirects to "careers.geico.com". Why bother with a .jobs TLD when you could just have "jobs.geico.com" or "careers.geico.com" as the advertised URL? Using a subdomain lends authenticity to the site, as users can be reasonably assured that it's actually the real GEICO doing the advertising.

There's plenty of space in ccTLDs -- with only 1.7 million registered names, .us is wide open compared to the 100+ million names in .com. Most other ccTLDs are similarly wide open: .de is the most popular ccTLD and has only 17 million registered names.

Adding new gTLDs is a terrible idea.

I'm pretty sure the internet is going to be www.facebook.com/companyname

At least that's what I'm afraid of.

They might for a while, but it won't last. Remember AOL keywords? Neither does anyone else.

True, but today "typical" users are more likely to use Google/Bing or Facebook to find a site rather than type in a URL.

As for new gTLD's - I can't wait for the hilarity to begin. There is already (behind doors) great concern about names like ".sucks" and ".wtf". The belief is that countries will object to someone running ".sucks" sites and either seek to have the TLD shut down, or demand tighter controls (ala ITU taking over).

Think the election is going to leave you knee deep in derp? Wait until ICANN gets ramped up...

The .jobs TLD is used almost exclusively by a company called DirectEmployers. Here is their About page

They build sites for companies to use as an extension of (like your Geico example) or instead of (like AT&T - att.jobs) a Careers page. Also, you can advertise your jobs on most of their network for free.

Exactly. Its so much easier just to google "Verizon Wireless Login" and get Google to point me to exactly where I want to be.

And, since I don't really facebook, and don't like their search functionality.... Googling "XYZ Restaruant Facebook" is faster for me.

Plus, a lot of places down here don't have sites... they use blogspot, Facebook, and other stuff to post their menus. Again... Google gets me there.

This.

I can't stand domain squatters.

Fear the Clam: squa

Why? Its just like real estate. There's nothing immoral about me buying tracts of land and offering them to people to develop on.

You can't squat a trademarked name, and there's a process to obtain a squatted domain a company thinks it has the rights to.

dibs on .fsm, .lulz, and .sucks

For example, duke.sucks

Except for the part about not being able to buy up millions of plots of land, that is. Real land speculators have to make decisions because even cheap land is expensive. Domain squatters just have to buy everything their script spits out and hope someone wants one of a thousand. Domain registrars encourage this behavior by offering steep discounts on bulk domain purchases. Then again, what can you expect from companies that collect millions of dollars for just running a database with a purchase and billing front end.

You can't squat a trademarked name, and there's a process to obtain a squatted domain a company thinks it has the rights to.

Why should one have to trademark anything? Why should one have to go to court to battle profiteers like this when they have no legitimate claim on it in the first place?

For what it's worth, I think ICANN are a bunch of tossers too, and their new TLD system is nothing but a money grab. Even if I had the money to buy my current domain as a TLD I'm not sure of the utility of it. It might prove to be as stupid as buying up all of the domains that happen to have your company name on them (.net, .org, etc.)

Did you ever see the lulzfest that happened when ReadWriteWeb had an article about Facebook's Login API that somehow made it to the number one spot in Google search results for "facebook login"?
To make matters worse, they had a Facebook Comments widget at the bottom of the page, which was full of idiots commenting on how they don't like the new facebook, how it shows comments from all these other users instead of their friends, etc.

Great anecdote, but really stresses how the "just google what you're looking for" model can fail.
Then again, god help the guy who reasons that going to facebook.login is a good idea. Phisher's wet dream.
