Also, if you want to really locate a couple of fugitives, you DON'T publicly announce that you're still actively looking -- you publicly announce that you've given up the chase. The latter will produce a better chance of a fugitive letting his guard down.

But, in my opinion, if these "dangerous criminals" have been out for fifty years and have stayed off the radar that long, isn't it possible that they've actually been rehabilitated?

The officer took a good look at everyone in the vehicle while another pointed his flashlight all over the cargo area. We weren't asked our ages, what was in the cooler, where we were coming from, or if we'd had anything to drink. I wasn't even asked to provide ID. We were told to drive home and not stop for anyone on the side of the road.

When we got home we turned on the TV and saw news about a manhunt for an escaped prison inmate. The prison was about a mile from where we were stopped. He was a convicted murderer and, I'm not making this up, escaped from his cell via the window using bed sheets tied together.
