I love his (admittedly 'ducks-in-a-barrel') comeback letter. As the son of a rage-addicted verbal abuser, I often fantasize about giving folks a good verbal beat-down.

Not sure how raising money for charity is some kind of "sweet revenge."
It almost seems like a waste of "fan capital" though I'm sure the fans will still kick-in if he appeals for medical bills for his cancer-stricken relative tomorrow. If he really wanted embarrass them, he would give them the $20k. Like when someone asks for your jacket and you also give them your cloak.

Prank Call of Cthulhu: annoying design that made blood spray out of my eyes.

In fact, here's an "artist's" recreation of what happened when I exposed myself to FunnyJunk.

i47.tinypic.com
We must therefore conclude that FunnyJunk is so painfully unfunny as to be dangerous. Also, obviously, I'm not going to be drawing any successful web comics any time soon, and should leave funny drawings to the Oatmeal.

I dunno, I'd trust your work network sooner than I'd trust a guy that says he's going to take all the donations and put them in a box to take a picture of. Sortof like the police evidence stuff...a $90,000 donation pile is cashed in for $80,000, and gets sent 50/50 to the two charities - $30k to one, $30k to another.

Where's the audit trail? It's not an escrow, he's already said he's going to take physical possession of the donations, and it's already leaps and bounds past that. Why not just donate two one of the two charities directly if you're worried?

Imagine that bully who used to shake other kids down for their lunch money now as a grown up. He's doing the same thing to another grown up and instead of scrimping and raising to hand over that cash, he turns around and raises that cash. Takes a picture of it to prove that he had it. And then just turns around and gives to someone else entirely. That's a big giant bird flipping there.

I'm sure he did. But either way it doesn't matter. The page has an individual timestamp on it as to when it was created, and I'm sure the links have some sort of timecode embedded into them. The fact that the links were removed from FJ's website after the fact only substantiates Matt's claim that his work was plagiarized- the lawsuit is horeshiat

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but does anybody know the tax implications of this? I mean, he's collecting money himself to turn over to charity, rather than providing direct donation links to the charities themselves. He's not a charity himself, so that could be seen as income to him by the IRS. If that's the case, even if you give it all away, you can only deduct up to 50% from your adjusted gross income, which could leave him on the hook for quite a bit in taxes.

There is a way to safely do it - I don't recall the specifics, but there is a way. My recollection is that none of those methods would involve cashing in the donations, putting them in a box, and taking a picture of the box of money...but I may not be remembering it correctly. :P

I would think that he could just claim the $100k as income followed by a 100k write off when he donates it. Kind of a PITA for his accountant, more likely he has special accounts set up specifically for this and he just "says' he is collecting and donating it when in fact it is all automatic.

It's a time thing. Either you're producing a bunch in a short time, you have a day job, whatever. And plenty of people (XKCD) have the occasional art-y one but do what they're comfortable with and what made them popular 99% of the time and focus on the funny instead.

1. keeping it for yourself after promising it to charity is kind of a dick move

2. The whole point is people giving him money that the lawyers *couldn't* try to coerce him out of. The fact that he isn't raising money for a legal reason is part of the awesome.
