This isn't particularly new. It's as expensive as hell to live in the north with a southern diet. What did flabbergast me was the $104 case of Nestle water. I have no idea why someone that lives amongst melting glaciers would feel the need to buy bottled water, like it's somehow better from someplace else on the planet. Three cheers for marketing!

FormlessOne: Ah, price-gouging at its finest - as indicated in the article, the local prices are way, way out of proportion with the expense of shipping. It's also amusing to see how quickly prices dropped when the complaints attracted publicity. It'll be interesting to see how this gets addressed, because local businesses are charging these prices with some degree of complicity with their local governments - otherwise, the problem would've been addressed sooner.

Well, the glaciers you speak of produce water free from flouride, pharmaceuticals and various other industrial waste. Why would you not want that? That stuff helps your teeth.

I'm going to call bullshiat on this. I've lived in Inuvik and Tuktoyuktuk, and while food prices were high, they was nowhere near this kind of discrepancy. Yes, it is more difficult for the poor to afford food... but someone has been playing with the price tag machine here.

A friend of mine found himself stuck on a far western island of Alaska once. He needed an inexpensive jacket so he bought a very cheaply-made hoodie in the town there, but had to pay $70 for it. It's not just price-gauging -- it costs a lot of money to fly goods to remote areas.

I don't get the outrage. Before the "modern world" arrived, could you even get peppers, cabbage, carrots, etc. there? Did they have grocery stores?

If the cabbage sellers are out destroying whatever food supply the natives have lived off of there for the past few centuries, forcing them to buy cabbage at $28 because there's no other food, then there's reason to be outraged. But I wouldn't move to the desert and then complain that it costs a lot of money to keep my house cool in the summer.
