He could have tapped the guy in front on the shoulder if he wanted him to move over a bit. This was... a more special tap. A sort of "say what are you doing after this?" kind of tap.

Look how weird the guy in front is sitting, possibly someone on other side so he doesn't fall over, and this guy holding him so he doesn't sway back in everybody's way. I worked for a very crappy TV station for a year and a half, and sometimes people physically move you so you can concentrate on the camera, also a lower angle keeps them form knocking the camera around, and allows you to better control any movement that happens.
