Mitt Romney's presidential campaign isn't backing off the candidate's claim that America needs fewer teachers, firefighters, and police officers. Instead, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu (R), a top Romney campaign surrogate, backed Romney's call this morning, telling MSNBC that changes in technology and population shifts have made layoffs of teachers and public safety officials necessary

If Congress is looking to save money, they should start by cancelling their gold plated health insurance and pension benefits. The average worker gets none of this. Neither should they.

What about TSA workers? Border patrol? FBI, ICE, etc?

Does Romney want more or less of them and their benefits?

You're only poor if you don't own a refrigerator.

If you live in a refrigerator, then you're poor. Other than that, you're just not working hard enough and you should stop complaining and enjoy your cold food.

If you live in a refrigerator, this means you have air conditioning. Which means you're not poor.

It really is beyond the pale at this point...

Yeah, cause when I think of the enormity of the issues that face this country, and the solutions needed to solve them, the first farking thing I farking think of is firing farking firefighters and teachers, you farking Republican stooge.

CSB

I lived in a refrigerator box one summer vacation after 4th grade. It was AWESOME! Later that fall, after it morphed through various phases of kid-imagined dwellings (rocket ship, etc) we coated it with car polish and piled about 10 kids in it, and sailed down the snow-covered hill behind our house.

Big government liberals are trying to force people to know things, abide by the law, and not be burned.

Real Americans should coordinate their efforts to oppose this kind of nanny state action by forgetting how to read and write, committing crimes, and setting themselves on fire! It's the patriotic thing to do.

I hope we see an awful lot of the guy who took a government limosine to Christie's, bought $5000 of rare stamps, and then sent the limo back to DC while he took a corporate jet back. Its not often you get a guy who's been ridiculed in MST3K, The Onion, Dilbert and the Naked Gun subsequently running a national campaign.

Eventually his moronic statements will make some fencesitters that lean towards him say "You know what, I'm sitting this one out rather than vote for either of them, while having the opposite effect for fencesitters leaning towards Obama, i.e. they get out and vote.

I say this, because while they might hate Obama, they also like having police presence and fire protection, given the public's willingness to bend over backwards to keep cops on the streets and firemen in the station house.

I'm sure this will come as good news for New Mexicans and Coloradans who aren't having any problems with explosively-growing fires burning out of control. Why don't homeowners just install sprinkler systems in the forest around them? That will take care of it. And will be totally bootstrappy.

The campaign staff has to be thinking "What will he say *no* to?"

Stay tuned next week when Mitt's platform includes "powering his campaign bus on burning bald eagle heads" and "allowing Republican presidents the right of banging every new bride before her husband gets to" and "Nuke The Moon."

I keep hoping the next atrocious statement will be the one that even the shills blanch at and take a step away from the GOP. Yet I know that there will be ardent defenders here shortly, some of which actually believe their bile.

At this point, I have to believe that the real poll numbers are so bad, that the Republicans realize that they stand no chance whatsoever, and are just throwing turds against the wall to see which ones stick with particular demographics.

I have to believe this, because the alternative is to believe that this is the best candidate the Republicans have, led by the best advisers money can buy, running the best campaign they possibly can. Because the idea that these people are serious scares me too farking much to believe it.

I remember it wasn't that long ago that cops and firemen were getting sloppy wet rim jobs from Republicans (and everyone else for that matter) on a daily basis.

Romney very much wants whatever you think he should want.

2012-06-11 03:03:06 PM
I think THIS:

SUNUNU: Let me respond as a taxpayer, not as a representative of the Romney campaign. There are municipalities, there are states where there is flight of population. And as the population goes down, you need fewer teachers. As technology contributes to community security and dealing with issues that firefighters have to deal with, you would hope that you can, as a taxpayer, see the benefits of the efficiency and personnel that you get out of that.

JANSING: But even if there's movement to the suburbs, teachers and policemen are needed somewhere.

SUNUNU: But I'm going to tell you there are places where just pumping money in to add to the public payroll is not what the taxpayers of this country want.

JANSING: Do you think that taxpayers of this country want to hear fewer firefighters, fewer teachers, fewer police officers, from a strategic standpoint?

SUNUNU: If there's fewer kids in the classrooms, the taxpayers really do want to hear there will be fewer teachers. [...] You have a lot of places where that is happening. You have a very mobile country now where things are changing. You have cities in this country in which the school population peaked ten, 15 years ago. And, yet the number of teachers that may have maintained has not changed. I think this is a real issue. And people ought to stop jumping on it as a gaffe and understand there's wisdom in the comment.

Is, in my opinion, directly related to THIS:

U.S. minorities now represent more than half of America's population under the age of 1, the Census Bureau said, a historic demographic milestone with profound political, economic and social implications.

The bureau - defining a minority as anyone who is not "single race white" and "not Hispanic" - released estimates on Thursday showing that 50.4% of children younger than 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011, up from 49.5% from the 2010 Census taken in April 2010.

Remember: poor ======= minority. And Jesus commanded to hate the poor and bless the rich. And rich ==== white. It just does. Because the old white ruling class says so.

They'll just go with that instead.

That article was the biggest bunch of derp I think I have ever read.

Teachers DO get laid off when enrollment drops. It happens all the time. Districts are run like a business, they will not pay someone to sit around. They actively look for reasons to cut and fire teachers without prejudice; hence the need for unions.

I have taken pay cuts and furlough days for the past four years as have almost all teachers. My pay has dropped to the point that I will need to get a second job despite having a Masters degree. and 100's of post-graduate college credit hrs.

Why people are jealous of teacher pay is beyond me. Republicans have been at war with the middle class for years. The all-too-close relationship with big business is what people need to be mad about.

Ridiculous, ridiculous ideas that, fortunately, are easily shown to be ridiculous. For example, if enough fires rage out of control, and enough crime increases, and enough kids fail out, it's pretty clear that these ideas are ridiculous.

I do think it sucks that we have to let people destroy our systems just to remind us of why we had them in the first place, but welcome to America.

Sooner or later the invisible hand of the market will put the fires out. People aren't patient enough. Just like trickle down economics, you need to give it more time.

THIS. I'm sure demanding fewer firefighters during wildfire season won't make for some embarrassing moments. Maybe he's sidling his way toward a Rick Perry VP nomination?

Ok, I can see that you are attempting to explain how this, just like everything in life, is racist...but I'm just not following.

Firefighters and teachers help poor people so we need less of them because fark the poor and the poor are black?

Yeah, well here they layoff teachers and increase class sizes. I would like to hear of this place where the opposite occurs. According to my local paper, it isn't happening in the suburbs either.

Remember folks:

Cutting the pay of a public school teacher making $50,000.00 a year is just sensible talk.

Slightly raising the taxes of a businessman making $5,000,000.00 a year is pure class warfare.

Republicans believe that government is unable to ever do anything good, and that all public services should be completely privatized. And if you don't believe them, then just elect them into power for a few years and let them prove it.
