I've seen pictures of abandoned bunkers in East Germany that were apparently designed to withstand the nuclear war that would break out when the Soviets invaded West Germany. Not pleasant places to live.

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

The photog that took these wonders how the bases could decline to quickly?
Apparently he knows nothing about Soviet manufacturing. As cheap and simple as possible, and by the 70s and 80s the Soviet Union was quickly running out of money for weapons and nukes, much less maintaining facilities. The US got in trouble for dilapidated housing and hospitals and some of our premier facilities. How long has is been since these places were renovated? I'm guessing it's well before 1989. Considering the wall art and some of the items in the photos, my guess would be pre-1970 (except occasional paint and patchwork done).

They have some of these where I used to live in Eastern Europe. One was an old fighter jet base and the runway was still in decent shape. I think I got up to around 130mph when I drove there last time. They also run drag races there during the summer, and even a rave every year.

Most places I visited have already been picked apart by looters, so it's mostly just rubbish and empty beer/vodka bottles from teenagers partying.

To be fair, exactly ONE of those photos was from Russia. The rest were taken in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany.

As messy as they are, I don't think those independent nations would appreciate Putin coming in to reoccupy and tidy up his old bases.

Chambley, France. Cold War NATO ruin. A very small part is used as a commercial industrial park. One week every two years it's the center for a hot air balloon festival.

The conspiracy theories behind that game are some of my favorites.

1) The Soviets threw the game to make the US feel better about the invasion of Afghanistan

2) The X-Files: Cigarette Smoking Man drugged the Soviet goalie just enough to slow him down but not have anyone notice.

Found this:

Link

"This is actually true. The Russian players were ordered to throw the game with the Americans... and in those days, you did not disobey direct orders of the Politburo.

However, after the regime change, some of the Russian players involved wanted to go public with the revelation. But being team players, they postponed their public announcement until the entire team agreed with the approach.

Late in the summer of 2001, the CIA got a wind of this Russian plan. Since this kind of a revelation would likely damage America's international image, the White House organized a meeting with the Russian hockey players to persuade them to keep silent. In exchange, the Russians thought that they would be promised rich, dollar-denominated pensions for the rest of their lives.

The morning meeting was organized in a conference room on the top floor of one of the World Trade Center towers. The date was September 11, 2001. "

A few years back I really started getting into the history of the cold war, specifically SAC and the bases under the command. I found this site and went to the list of bases then started looking for them on Google Earth. The evolution end eventual devolution of the bases was fascinating (to me anyway) and I wondered if there was a way that I could do the same with Soviet bases. Well I found a list of Russian airfields and started hunting away using Google Earth (Lat Long coordinates are given). A little too expansive but interesting nonetheless.

Apparently they drugged the Swedish goalie, too.

\US-Russia was the semi-final.
