Marcus Aurelius: Nixon would be considered a communist.

No change there then.

The right wing loonies of his day thought he was a Communist even before he went to China. They thought Eisenhower was a Communist. They really thought JFK was a Communist and prayed daily for his assassination. The difference is that the Loonies are now in charge of the asylum.

You know who else thought Nixon was a Communist mole? Philip K. Dick, the SF writer who gave us the stories which Hollywood turned into Screamers, Total Recall, Bladerunner, etc. True, he had a psychotic episode. But psychosis is psychosis, and ultra right wingers are all psychotic, so it's no wonder if they'll all weave the same crap into their fantasy worlds.

Bush Sr., of course, put his foot in it (his mouth, of course) when he spoke of the New World Order. This is the kind of talk that sets off the Loonies. In this case, not only a lot of right wing conspiracy theorests but Pat Robertson, who wrote a biblically themed conspiracy theory entitled The New World Order. Part of the distrust of Bush is due to the right wingers knowing their dirty laundry (Nazi sympathizers that so many of them are) and partly because Bush, as Ambassador to China and Director of the CIA managed to escape Watergate and to increase the trade ties with Red China, laying the ground for WalMart and GM and Co to sell out America while underselling the competition.

Also, Bush was one of the men who by an executive order under Reagan, took up the job of hiding in undisclosed locations in case the Ruskies attacked and there was a risk of Dan Quayle becoming President. (Google Seymour Hersch). The right wing nutters knew about this "Shadow Government" and worked it into their fantasies and conspiracy theories along with the Bilderbergers, Bohemian Grove, the Trilateral Commission, the Federal Reserve System, fiat currency, the United Nations, and all the other internationalist and "socialist" institutions that the Loonies fear, as well as the panacea they embrace, such as Bimetalism and Gold Buggery.

Bush and Junior were considered liberals by some of the same nutters, and so was Reagan, although there is some truth in that because he was in fact, a liberal until he started making big money in the early to mid-Fifties. He promptly became a California Republican, which is another kind of Looney that finds Commies under every bed or rock.

List of Presidents who were not Commies in the eyes of the Looney Right now in charge of America:

Buchanan.
Wilson (neo-cons only. They rehabilitated him in the 1990s after their Stalinist purge of moderate and liberal Republicans.)
Reagan (Evangelicals and former Democrats only)
Harding (he was too much of a crook and a dumbass to be a Commie. To quote the Freaks in the movie of the same name: One of us! One of us! One of us!)
Hoover (Herbert, not J. Edgar)
FDR (Lord Black of Cross Harbour only--only God knows why)
Ford (too much of a dumbass to be a Commie, but also too much of a dumbass to be legit. Not elected.)
Lincoln is acceptible only North of the Mason Dixon Line of the soul.

In short, the Looney Right are small, bitter, hateful people who don't like anybody, including their own heroes. They may not be the whole rank and file of the Republican Party (which is somewhat Purple out in the country) but they must be managed very carefully, like witch hunters have to be managed very carefully even by the most devout Puritans. They devour their own and will pick their teeth with the bones of your children, no matter how orthodox you might be on all points but the one of conviction against you.

EnviroDude: Reagan, not so much. But yeah, he would be if he rolled around today.

Reagan presided when the democrats owned the house and senate. With the media selling the democrat message on ABC, NBC and CBS, he had to compromise in order to move his agenda ahead.

RINO? No.

Bush, however, would live up to the moniker. His compromise on "Read my lips, no new taxes" gave us the perjurer in chief.

Wrong. The republicans controlled the Senate 53- 47 after the 1980 election.

Ned Stark: Ned Stark: Hobodeluxe: tenpoundsofcheese: And that Mitt Romney put that plan in effect while he was Govenor?
No not true. Mitt did not put in place a national program. State rights, how do they work.

so you're saying it's okay when a state mandates it but not the feds because....

All powers not explicitly granted to the federal government fall to the states. That is, the federal goveenment is limited to doing exactly what the constitution says it can. States can do anything they want as long as it disentangle violate someones rights.

Doesn't*

Not disentangle.

That sentence did come out interesting though.

Unless the people are gay, then fark em even Obama says it's ok because it's a state issue. Seems that we always have to have at least 1 minority to abuse. Women, Japanese, Muslim, Gay......there has to be one.

tenpoundsofcheese: Darth_Lukecash: tenpoundsofcheese: kingoomieiii: And Bush also blamed President Obama for much of the conflict.

"His first year could have been a year of enormous accomplishment had he focused on things where there was more common ground," he said, arguing that Obama had made a "purely political calculation" to run a sharply partisan administration.

He called that one right.
He thought he had a mandate so he went with the my way or the highway.
after his shellacking in 2010 he still didn't realize that he needed to reach out and work with the GOP.

You realize that obamacare was actually Bob Doles answer to Hillary's plan?

No. Not true. Besides, remind me, was Dole President?

And that Mitt Romney put that plan in effect while he was Govenor?
No not true. Mitt did not put in place a national program. State rights, how do they work.

You also realized that Obama did agree to many of Republicans demands to avoid shutdown twice?
even a broken clock is right twice a day.

As well as allowing the codification of the Patriot act?
even a broken clock is right twice a day.

It's ONLY the republicans mission to ruin Obama, at the cost of the countries economy, to ensure a one term president?

0bama is ruining himself, he doesn't need help. He explicitly stated that he rather do what HE thinks he should and be a one term President. He just may get his wish.

Dole was a very influential senator who got laws passed. You have not denied its a republican idea. Therefore i won that point.

You do not deny that Mitt helped pass an Obamacare bill. While you are right about difference between State and national levels-there really is no difference in application.(unless the supreme court says otherwise)
Still I win that point as well.

You also conceed that he had agreed with you twice.. More than a broken clock. He's also slowed federal spending.
So far you've agreed on every one of my points.

Obama said he'd do the right thing for the country, even if it cost him base voters. A lot of liberal voters have to put up with some of his decisions.
However the GOP hsve decided to damn the torpedoes and take down the economy just for political gain.

So to recap: you agree with me on all points- yet you are so blinded by you love for all things GOP, you cannot compromise and say so.

You are what is wrong with the nature of politics in America.

Is marriage a right? I think not!

Though I suppose gay marriage being illegal is a violation of the right to equal protection under the law.

Actually, many considered Bush I to be a RINO in yesterday's GOP.

This.

The extremists who were already beginning to take over the party crucified him to make an example of him.

They didn't full-tilt Norquist him like they did Bob Riley, or Rove him like they did McCain in the SC primaries in 2000, but it was made very clear he was not a rabid supply-sider and therefore persona non grata in the modern extremist "All for ourselves, and nothing for other people" masters of mankind version of the GOP.

What about Barry Goldwater?

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
