If DOJ has turned over tens of thousands of documents and Holder has appeared some 8 times, what is the committee still expecting? What is contempt for?

I ask, only because it seems they are mad that DOJ didn't turn over documents that specifically say Holder personally handed guns to Mexican drug lords. What if nothing more is actually there?

There's got to be proof somewhere! If only they dig deeper...

The point is to keep it in the news. I don't think they expect to find anything, but if they can give an impression that something is there to find it will hurt Obama.

Basically, they didn't get LITERALLY everything they wanted, so they're going to charge him with contempt. Fine, whatever. Let the law sort it out.

The Justice Department gave Congress black paper (pages and pages of redacted material). Jon Stewart was aghast, and Darryl Issa looked and sounded like a responsible politician. It's basically a genuine scandal.

And also, the acting director of the ATF had a television feed in his office where he viewed the straw purchases as they were happening.

So when people say that officials within the Justice Department at the highest level knew what was going on and approved of this scheme, they're not making that up.

I liked the part where Holder goes to Vin Diesel's cool party, but there's only one beer left. Because when I think of a really cool party, I think they would only have one beer.

Big_Fat_Liar: So can any federal employee set foreign policy or do you have to be a 3rd shift supervisor or something?

I think it's all about how zealous their staffers are. A 3rd shift supervisor with a staffer of average zealotry certainly isn't going anywhere in the world. If he wants to be 2nd shift, or even 1st, his staffer's going to have to pick it up and run. The more zealous the better. You simply can't possess too much zeal.

So, the GOP's going with the "fark it, we can't gain power through the democratic process, let's try this bullshiat again" strategy.

2012-06-11 11:01:43 AM
This isn't a witch hunt. They're not going after a political enemy for getting a beege on the clock. The F & F program was a disaster, and the DOJ publicly lied about it after the fact. They provided assault rifles to gangsters, FFS. Congress has a duty to investigate.

The subpoena is legitimate. If Holder isn't complying with it, he absolutely should be held in contempt.

That is some shiat. Hadn't heard of any live feed before. So, is the reason for redaction because these are public hearings or just Holder/DOJ being a troll?

Issa has said that his investigations will not necessarily be partisan - he's indicated that he might investigate the George W. Bush presidency as well as the current administration - but Democrats anticipate an aggressive posture from the California Republican when it comes to oversight of the Obama administration.

This sounds legit.

Do you not remember the Jon Stewart clip where he made fun of the DOJ's response by showing an entirely redacted piece of paper? The DOJ's response has been a joke. They are stonewalling in the worst possible way in order to protect whomever is responsible for the deaths resulting from F&F.

Watch this clip of Holder being questioned if you need further proof of how bad it's gotten. The guy questioning Holder has a copy of an email that mentions "gun walking" via F&F prior to the death of Brian Terry and Holder keeps trying to say it was in reference to Wide Receiver not F&F. The guy is completely full of crap and the only reason I hope Romney wins this election is to see Holder and his cronies get what's coming to them.

My guess is that the redactions are to protect people from federal prison via perjury, obstruction, etc. Not to mention all of the gun laws that were broken by the government....

That's a bit of my problem. It seems that DOJ did something really bad but the constant bullshiat spewing from the far right makes it hard to believe anything they claim.

If this is a legit thing (the cover up bit, clearly f&f was not proper), then Holder should go. The beaurocrat or political person that came up with the f&f fiasco should be held responsible.

It seems like congress should confirm a director for ATF. Having never had an actual director may have an effect of accountability within the organisation.

Your assessment of the situation is correct. This is pretty much being buried in the news because the GOP is more concerned about abortions and just shouting "NO!" at whatever Obama wants. They've put out so much noise that it's hard to make sense of the GOP at this point.

The sad thing is, this does seem to be a legitimate scandal and Holder should be held accountable for it.
