Steven Gerrard ran over a child and got arrested for a cowardly bar fight (3-on-1).

Sadly, these are not jokes/fabrications.

/he's a douchebag

Well, this sloooow match certainly is a nice friendly.

Remember, diving only happens on the teams from the soft southern European and South American countries.

This is what you get when 2 big teams meet up in a group match. Nobody wants to lose.

That's why the group format is stupid.

Make the tournament bigger with shiattier teams so the big teams can just shiat on little ones apparently.

I could maybe see a double elimination group stage, that might be cool.

It wouldn't be so bad if this was the second game. The worst are first games and third games when the group is already decided (Argentina vs Netherlands 2006 was the absolute WORST.)

wouldn't that make seeding really really farking important? where the best two teams could meet in the prequarters (aka round of 16)?

Pentaxian: Samir Nasri killed five hookers, so I've heard.

/John Terry was an accomplice.

Maybe we should get Joey Barton to beat 'em up or somethin'.

And yeah, England are diving more than France, FRANCE! There is nothing redeeming about England right now.

If you're the best team, you beat the other teams.. so not really.

Not that hard of a job.. use the stupid fifa rankings if you must.

Well, I think England's last shot towards the French goal must've been their goal in the first half.
France had 2 or 3 attempts from rather a distance.

Spain lost their first game against Poland in the World Cup, and came back to win it. Besides, in a pure knock out tourney, we'll get stuck w/ 2004 Greece for eternity. Nobody wants that.

We've had some great matchups with kindal lame games.

France - Englan 1:1
Spain - Italy 1:1

Nobody wants that.

At the end nobody is even getting into the box for France incase they get countered

I'll take that point.

Some positives for England. Organisation looked good. Toughest game out of the way.

Didn't see the counter attacking pace of Oxlade-C or Young/Walcott though.

The commentators excuse for the way England played that game? "You have to play to the talent you have".

So England doesn't have the talent to win matches anymore?

Not against France without Rooney.

England was way too passive. From the moment France tied it up, England was playing for the draw. France at least looked like they were trying to win it.

desertgeek: oment France tied it up, England was playing for the draw. Franc

That was absolutely the intended result. For Hodgson this was mission accomplished. Then stomp the Ukraine and Sweden and make your way out of the group, probably in 2nd.

I'd be curious to see how you would have seeded it. If you look at the groups and compare them to FIFA rankings, with the exception of group A you somewhat balanced groups.

And it has the advantage of being less corruptible, which matters with an organization like FIFA.

And Alexi Lalas is an idiot. STFU and let Ballack speak. He's a world class player, you are a once flash in the pan and failed GM.

How is getting the result that puts you in the best chance to get out of the group "too passive"?

2012-06-11 02:16:00 PM
So basically France and England are content to tie and both have the chance to get out of the group, neither would need to play each other again and they probably both see the game against Sweden as their make or break game.

Hope it blows up in their faces.

I'm not sure how to fix this stupid group stage format. Maybe award no points for draws as well and have golden goal extra time. Or maybe add a team to each group but still have only two advance so the points matter more. Straight knockout is probably best but you would lose a ton of travelling fans who are guaranteed three games now.

I think adding a team to each group, but only advancing the top 2 is the best answer and would work well for the Euro tournament. I don't know if that would work for the World Cup because that's such a long tournament as is.

2012-06-11 02:35:45 PM
I recall hearing something about how they do not want more 0-0 ties in the group stage in the next World Cup, and how they were thinking of adding shootout.

And now, pics of Swedish ladies in the crowd. 3, 2, 1, go.

That would change the number of games per group from 6 to 10, and mean one team wasn't playing per round of games - especially crucial in the last round of games.

I think in league and group play, a 0-0 draw should award 0 points.

If you can't score, you can't get a point.
