It's actually really cool to see how the metal starts to deform non-linearly under intense forces. Metallurgy is a pretty neat science.

What are we looking at there? What's the scale of that, microns or meters? I assume the steel is hot, right?

5 minutes and 56 seconds? Interesting, but, almost 6 minutes of watching something that looks like water flow past a stationary object.

For fark sake, can you just link direct to the YouTube video?

Depth of cut would usually be a few thousandths of an inch.

This is Industrial Engineering geek-out time... IE 310 takes me back a ways!

I'll add "soul-stirring","exquisite","divine" and "a veritable masterpiece".

Sadly, the same can't be said for the accompanying video.

Took me a minute to realize that wasn't water flowing past at first. Interesting to see the characteristics our universe takes on when you look close enough.

RoyBatty is a *nearly* insufferable twat commenter on Fark but often displays some redeeming depth... just before going out for a smoke or something. The YT link the replicant linked is informative, if only that it explains in advance that the video is showing different cutting tools against different materials.

It's quite fascinating to see how the different metals flow and break at, under and ahead of the cutting tool. A must see for students in materials science classes. Eutectic, my rusty ass!
