Mentat: Given where she came from, this is pretty gutsy.

Considering Tulsa has one of the largest per-capita gay populations in America, and has had an active gay community since at least the late 80's/early 90's, it's not surprising to see someone from the suburbs with those views.

We beg your pardon for not being more familiar with Tulsa's demographics, but Mentat's point remains. Even if Tulsa is a shining beacon for diversity, Ms. Underwood works in an industry that has a reputation for being homophobic. Perhaps this reputation is undeserved, but she's speaking out on a hot-button topic knowing full well it's more likely to cost her fans than bring new ones into the fold. I think that's gutsy.

You couldn't pay me enough to sit through one of her albums* but I applaud her for speaking out, and for doing so in such a simple, sincere way.

*Seriously, is Jesus Take the Wheel the most ridiculous song ever? If I get into an accident can I just tell the cops "well, I started to slide so I told Jesus to take the wheel"?

1. Dixie Chicks said what they said 10 days before the Iraq war.
2. They said it in London.
3. They continued to make shiatty little political remarks afterwards.
4. If it's fine to try to blacklist Limbaugh when he says something incredibly ignorant, stop your biatchin if it goes contrary to your beliefs.
5. Know your audience.

No Such Agency: People burned Dixie Chicks CD's outside their churches after they spoke their politics publicly. I expect an immediate, similar response by at least somebody. The toothless angry impotent Southerner crowd will eventually be left with only their Prussian Blue albums to play over and over again.

Prussian Blue are now pot smoking liberals. They'll soon have nothing but their old stack of scratched Johnny Rebel 45s and frequent masturbation to keep them occupied.

Nerdhurter: If it's fine to try to blacklist Limbaugh when he says something incredibly ignorant

You can have different views on different issues, but Limbaugh is another level of ignorance and filth. People can boycott whatever they want but nothing the Dixie Chicks have ever said can even compare to the decades of hack shock jock garbage Rush has done for his whole attention whoring career.

If you don't like what Natalie Maines said, and decide to boycott the Dixie Chicks, that's a bit vindictive to me but perfectly within your rights. You can call the radio station and say "please don't play the Dixie Chicks" and refuse to buy Dixie Chicks CDs. Same with Rush. If he says something you don't like, you can call his advertisers and complain. I would just turn the station, but hey, that's just me.

Only it didn't end there. The Dixie Chicks got death threats. Natalie Maines' home was vandalized. Her father - a combat veteran - received hate mail. Those are not the actions of sane people, and they're not acceptable responses no matter what Natalie Maines said or where she said it.

Maines simply stated that she was ashamed to be from the same state as Bush. That hardly rises to the level of hateful vitriol Rush spews on a daily basis.

False equivalency is false.

DancingElkCondor: Even people not supportive of Bush or the war did not like the attack on our troops,

Funny, I don't remember any attack on our troops, just the President at the time. Or is the President part of "the troops" because he's the Commander-in-Chief?

You bring up another good point. Where is all the "support your president" attitude for the commander in chief from our current military like they were during the Bush reign? They're both Christians. Oh yeah, he has a "D" by his name instead of an "R". Farking hypocrites.

DancingElkCondor: I don't think Carrie Underwood will get the blow back like the Ditzy Chicks did.

What got the Ditzy Chicks in trouble was that they did what they did during the middle of a war. Even people not supportive of Bush or the war did not like the attack on our troops, or the smugness of Natalie Maines (the one who actually made the comment)

Also, the Ditzy Chicks decided to have a big feud with Toby Keith...and that pretty much sealed the Chicks fate. Keith at the time was as popular as the Chicks...and fans of both sided w Keith on that one

You signed on to Fark this week... for this? "Ditzy Chicks"? Really? I am embarrassed for you.

Gladly. You asked when we start the Bill Maher boycott. If you want one, start one. Nobody's stopping you. And now that I think about it, Bill Maher isn't a very good example for you to bring up of someone who is not held accountable for their words. He lost his program - Politically Incorrect - because of controversial comments.

Nerdhurter: I'm sure Limbaugh never received a death threat.

So what? Death threats are not an acceptable response to any public figure - left, right or whatever - making a political statement. "They did it too!" is no defense. Whoever made (or continues to make) threats against Rush's safety is flat out wrong, just like whoever did the same against Natalie Maines or her father was flat out wrong.

Good lord, the fact that I have to explain that amazes me.

2012-06-11 03:00:24 AM
At this point in time, there is no aspect of society that can be even so much as touched by politics in any way, shape or form and not end up getting smeared by it, even if they did nothing to contribute to the involvement.

For example, to keep with country music, earlier this year Taylor Swift- who pretty much goes out of her way to be as apolitical as possible- was to be presented the Nickelodeon Kids Choice 'Big Help Award' for a particularly large round of philanthropy, with donations to Nashville flood relief and Joplin tornado relief efforts specially noted.

The award just so happened to be presented by Michelle Obama.

Cue Taylor's Facebook wall being loaded down with fans saying things like 'I'm sorry' and 'Don't worry, I still like you'. A couple people actually demanded that Taylor either refuse the award or demand that it be presented to her by someone else.

That's how easy it is these days to get political shiat all over you.

Gosling: That's how easy it is these days to get political shiat all over you.

The most upsetting part of that story is that Taylor will no doubt write a song about it.

Boo farkin hoo, it ain't our fault that Americans find Limbaugh more disgusting than Maher. It also helps that advertisers have nothing to do with HBO, so all you can do is boycott HBO. Go for it but don't be mad that other people just don't care enough to join you. Also, what did what you just say have to do with anything, you are the one that compared the Dixie Chicks to Limbaugh and now you'r talking about Maher.

Umm... that's not a boycott, that's a personal choice. For it to be a boycott, you'd have to have had interest in listening to them at some some time in the past. They would have suddenly said things that you didn't agree with, and to punish them, you'd cease listening to them, thus damaging their product or audience shares somehow.

Never liking them, or even that genre of entertainment, that's not a boycott, that's just you not liking them. If you were never going to listen to them in the first place, you're not taking away anything from them.

"I hate sci fi movies, so I refuse to see Prometheus!"

"Whoa, dude, do you have something against Ridley Scott, or the actors, or the production company?"

"Nope, I just never liked Sci fi. Wouldn't watch it ever."

The problem isn't the number of people who oppose gay marriage. It's the number of people that just don't give a shiat about an issue that doesn't affect them. If you can convince those folks to go the polls in favor of, it would likely Pass more often than not. However, the current crop of lgbtbbqrsvp activists come off as too militant and not likable.

What I've found most interesting is the vocal rejection of blacks who were part of the civil rights movement in regards to gay rights. Those guys are not down with the buttsecks.

But a lot of why people are against it IS a visceral fear of "the buttsecks". I think it's because the idea of a man being penetrated "like a woman" makes conservative men fearful and angry, especially the ones who get a bit of a woody when they think about it. The Bible is just their excuse.

Gay marriage will be the subject of several ballot measures in November's election and is also at the centre of two high-profile legal cases. Mr Obama's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, is opposed to extending gay rights.

Because we've solved all the other issues in this country, right?

I thought this comment from the article said it all:

stannley

Just lost me as a fan. We already all have equal rights--no one gets to marry whoever they love. I can't marry someone already married, can't marry my son or dad or a child. We have boundaries in our society for the good of society--and marriage should be between a man and a woman, according to God's (and nature's) design. How self-indulgent to assume that there are no moral boundaries--that all things are gray and everyone should do whatever feels good to them, despite what is best for society in general.
Christians are called on to love, first and foremost. And truly loving my gay friends is wanting what is best for them. Being in defiance of a divine creator who does get to judge doesn't sound like something I would encourage someone I love to do.
