mephisto6: Gaius: Heraclitus: I think if they brought back Sambo's it would be a riot!

Sambo's Rocked!

Sambo's rocked. Seriously though, with the slave pics along the wall? That's not happening today

They weren't slave pics; none of the people in it were slaves. Though the photos were unfortunate period caricatures of dark-skinned Tamil natives.

The original featured a little boy in India, and was popular for decades before political correctness, and the story was great. Kid gets lovely new clothes, is beset by tigers, trades his clothes for his life, and tricks the tigers into chasing each other around a tree until they're reduced to butter, which his mother uses to make pancakes. The hero is clever and proud and outwits his foes. Nothing slavish about it. Though of course I understand how people perceive it is largely driven by the illustrations, and by many versions of it that employed stereotypes.

finnished: thoreau: the only ones I recognize on that list are Casa Bonita, Kenny Rogers, and Showbiz Pizza. The only one I've seen in real life is Showbiz. I think it was like a Chuck E Cheese's.

I'd except Pizzeria Uno's Chicago Grill to be on that list before long, unless their foreign locations keep them afloat. I used to go to the ones in Lawrence, KS and the KC area and they were always fantastic, but since about 2005 there isn't one within 500 miles anymore. I tried a couple in St. Louis and just recently one in Wisconsin and they were all shiat. The company has already gone bankrupt once and closed down a ton of locations.

I would love for them to get back to the level they were at a decade ago, when the food was good. Dunno what happened.

The one time I tried it, the pizza took 40 minutes to get (to be fair, the waiter did warn before hand), but when it got in, it was barely warm and I was pretty sure it was just a frozen pizza they had chucked in the oven.

They've apparently all moved to Maryland. There are at least two within 15 minutes of my house,

TomD9938: Rax and Red Barn.

Rax is dead, right?

Also came here for Rax. That was one of our after-church lunch spots. Salad bar, cookies, and the baked potatoes! Then we had to switch over to Izzy's Pizza, which started in my hometown.

Bathia_Mapes: Warchild: I miss having A&W' drive-ins around here, and to a lesser extent Roy Rogers.

*sigh*

There's at least one A&W drive-in left in Lane County. It's in Florence, Oregon. There's also an Arctic Circle near Newport, Oregon.

Still an AC in Salem and one in Dallas.

800 posts and no love for Ollie's Trolley? I miss Ollieburgers so very much.

//Yes I know there are a couple of them still around. If I ever get back to D.C. I'll be sure to hit that one.

Lum's - my uncle used to work there, circa 1975. The building it was in is now a doctor's office/MRI.
Victoria Station - made of real train cars in Oakland Park, FL - now a storage unit place.
Sambo's - morphed into a Denny's.
Sizzler - now part of a strip mall with GameStop
Swiss Chalet - best roasted chicken and ribs - now a mattress store

I still miss Skipper's ice cream but I think they're in Deerfield Beach now.

2012-06-11 06:19:58 PM
I miss Big Al's restaurant, which was owned by Al and Potsie. They made the burgers with fresh beef and cooked them to order; the fries were awesome and the ingreedients fresh and high quality. All for about a buck more than a mcdonalds meal of the same approximate size.

Also also, anyone remember the "Satellite Cafe" across the street from Disneyland? I think it was on Katella near the 5. I was in the area last year but it was not. :(

Wrongo: Pioneer Chicken. Never ate at one, not much of a fried chicken guy. In honor of Warren Zevon.

I loved Pioneer Chicken! It was orange and oily and so delicious. I also miss Loves's BBQ (When you're in Love's, the whole world's delicious), and Naugles :)

That area up and does a damn-near re-level with brand new hotels and restaurants every 15 years or so.

ciberido: Sugarpuss O'Shea: Galaxie500: Not a national chain, but I really miss Darryl's in North Carolina.

Steak and Ale was always good, too.

I remember a chain that I think was called Darryl's. Did it have unique seating areas? You could eat dinner in a jail cell, or in an elevator, or a double-decker bus?

Sounds about right. There was one in Raleigh that was doing well until the fire. Good food.

I think that was the one on Glenwood Avenue...they had one on Wake Forest Road, which was the first to close. The Hillsborough Street location was the last one, and it closed very suddenly...I remember going there one game night to find the doors locked.

The one that was nearest me had the curious habit of only hiring waitresses that were part sasquatch. And not in the Subgenius meaning of the word. 6' + frightening looking women. Or lumberjacks in drag. We were never sure.

I don't know if that was some kind of Chicago thing, or what.

The deep dish pizza that were 40% shortening were less than awesome.

I understand there's a Tilted Kilt either there or across the street from it, if it's still even around.

lar_m: There was also a Flying Tomato Bros in Bloomington IN. By the slice, wonderful sauce.

Worked at a G D Ritzys,

http://www.herald-dispatch.com/entertainment/dining/x493388156/G-D-Ri t zys-a-throwback-to-yesteryear

They made there own ice-cream, put spaghetti noodles in the chili, great fresh burgers. Had this PBJ - Texas Toast, whole peanuts on top of the {B, sliced strawberries on the jelly, sliced bananas as an option.

My dad went to high school with Graydon Webb (founder of Ritzys). I can remember barbecues at the guy's house back when he was an exec at Wendy's. As a young child, I was most impressed with the soda fountain that he had in his back yard. I grew up in the Columbus OH area, where Wendy's is based, and where GD Ritzys was founded.

I really miss Ritzy's fries.

There's a ton of them left in Utah and S Idaho (AKA N. Utah). In looking at the menu online, I was sorry to see that they no longer list one of the best-named burgers ever: "The Gutbuster". There are several former ACs in the area that still pay homage to that burger by calling it the "Buster". Kids these days have no idea about the provenance of the name.....

HiFiGuy: Carroll's restaurants morphed into Burger Kings, but I vaguely remember going to one as a kid. No clue about the food there. More of a "curiosity" thing than a "nostalgia" thing.

Sooo, I'll vote for "Chicken Unlimited." We ate there a lot. Well, I guess it's like Carroll's, except my memories were slightly fonder(?)

If there's one still around, it's not near me, so "it's dead to me."

It was a McD's knockoff. Club Burgers vs. Big Mac (the Club Burger secret sauce was Thousand Island dressing), the basic burger/cheeseburger were exactly the same. The Carrolls (no apostrophe) fish sandwich didn't have cheese, McD's did. I got a job at one after my 1st year of college, about 6 weeks in they announced they were closing and switching all the Carrolls owned stores to BK's. I managed to get a job at another franchisee's store once I got back to college. Those stores didn't last too long once they lost the advertising that CDC (Carrolls Development Corp) was putting out. Too bad, I liked Club Burgers more than I did Big Macs.

Until a few years ago, I still carried a Mister Donut punchcard, dating from the late '60s. There seems to be one store still operating in the US. I didn't know that the founder of Mister Donut was the brother-in-law of the founder of Dunkin' Donuts. Isn't the internet a marvelous thing?

Is it ever ok to say, "Hey, this is really offensive to black people. Maybe we just shouldn't do it because hey, even if our intentions are good, it might hurt their feelings?"

Is it always ok to hurt black people's feelings to make white people feel comfortable?

If black people wanted any credibility then perhaps they'd not embrace the gangsta rap culture and embrace education and respect intelligent role models instead of shunning them.

Sambo's is not the problem. A cyclic self-destructive culture is the problem. Pointing it out is not racism. The first step of recovery is admitting it's a problem.

So, in other words, if black people acted the way white people wanted them to act, then white people wouldn't do and say racist things?

How do you think black people should act then? Say, like President Obama? I think he's an excellent example of how anyone should lead their lives. Of course there's never any racism directed towards him.

Like, ever.

Hmmmm.....so Sambo's isn't a problem for white people because, as a restaurant chain, it goes the extra mile in pointing out the destructiveness issues and elements in black culture and reinforces them for white people to study and mock.

Interesting.

Interesting.

Hermione_Granger: How do you think black people should act then.

How about like everyday civilized people for starters instead of self-destructive obnoxious thugs?

When there are obnoxious kids on the trams or busses being loud, tossing trash and spitting on the floor, playing music without headphones, feet on the seats, etc. it's not the white kids, it's not the Asian kids, it ain't the Hispanics.

The culturally ingrained anti-social behavior which lacks respect for others and themselves is endemic. This is what Cosby and other educators are referring to. The cyclical poverty and poor family structure enable this and no one can stop it but them. I want it to stop. I want an integrated society. But they're not doing themselves any favors lashing out at nonsense like Sambo's when their self-perpetuated minstrel show goes on.

Of those causing problems the majority are the black kids. It has nothing to do with race. It's culture. It's how they were raised

It's not the black kids. It's the American inner city kids. It is just that most of them are black due to the demographics. If you go outside of the metropolitan areas or outside the US, you won't find the same behavior. Even the Canadians make fun of us for it.

Interesting perspective. Wrong and racist as hell, but interesting.

At least you're not scapegoating an entire group of people or anything. I mean hey, then you might have to actually look at what the hell is wrong with white people too.

But hey, as long as you can blame it on a majority of black kids, no skin off your nose, eh?

Where TF did Praxcelis even get into your silly debate, other than to say you are both threadjacking?

While I'll be on the side that says, "Yeah, I know Sambo's name was part of the founders first names put together, that is like saying Kristopher Kringle Klein is just naming his business 'KKK' because it is his initials, and he shouldn't take any other usage into account." which is bogus, 'Sambo' was just a poorly chosen name, especially after the 60s, and should have been changed with the times....but, you guys have taken it down a tangent for a political thread, not a foodie thread.

The personal attack did seem a bit misplaced, but I'll be understanding of it. Single-issue activists do have an unconscious tendency to view the world through the lens of their particular cause. I have a daughter who is heading down the "social crusader" road and I'm trying to let her know while that it's a proud and sometimes lonely pursuit, she shouldn't always assume malice whenever someone doesn't immediately agree with her cause. That sort of reflexive anger will actually lose her possible allies.

ObFoodie: a guilty pleasure that's also vanished from the Seattle area--Skippers. I'd take a thick book into AYCE Fish Day (this was before they made it a regular menu item and jacked the price) and enjoy fish'n'chips'n'chowder until I waddled out.

This doesn't really fit the topic, but if you consider any hot dog place in Chicago with a Vienna Beef sign out front to be part of a chain, then the one I would bring back was called L&M Grill (I think), but everyone just called it "the Hut." It really was a hut in the front yard of a house on a street filled with normal storefronts. The counter was run by an elderly immigrant couple and their various family members. A hot dog and fries was like $2.25, which was dirt cheap even for the time. Best hot dogs and fries I have ever had.
