Well that was fast. Bad luck of the Irish.

2012-06-10 02:50:54 PM
Wow. Bad defense, but what other than the game was the goaltender paying attention to?

Gosling: yookaloco: ... and soccer was the product of those dirty filthy English.

Sounds reasonable.

Gosling: yookaloco: Hey, why don't they have a better team? I mean, I always held the impression that Ireland was fanatical about football/soccer, and all the athletic kids flocked only to that. They have the interest, they have a sizable population, they should have something soccerwise to show for it, no?

Ireland's always been playing catchup because back in the day the local authorities were adamant about promoting Gaelic sports, and soccer was the product of those dirty filthy English.

Oh jeez. I guess it makes sense. Not the decision, of course, but it explains it. Thanks. I'm sending you a Guinness. :)

Back in the day means a loooooong way back. Growing up in Dublin in the '70's, I was under no pressure to play Gaelic sports over football. So what you say may have been true in the 50's or 60's but not really after.

Was "Orange" really the best ad for an Ireland game?

But you've got to admit that Gaelic football is a lot more fun than English football

I love it.

I'm American. I know better than pretty much any other nationality of soccer fan what a country's formative athletic years can do to a sport. You don't get in on the ground floor, it's a long, long climb.

Pletikosa didn't commit enough, guessed wrong on his first instinct and it was too late by the time he set about fixing his direction. That ball could have been ably saved by a better keeper.

I heard it too, but the way the mic picked it up, I thought it was on the pitch.

Not a bad save, but the Irish goalie's reaction time is more or less the worst I've seen at this level of play.

Wasn't Ireland the team that got jobbed by a bad call against France in the last WC qualifying?

Shame Rooney is out for the 1st two games though. Worse, is that half of their club is more injured than the Buffalo Bills

Yup, the goal that put them out was a blatant hand ball by Henri in extra time.

Come on Ireland! But I do love Jelavic and Modric so maybe a 4-3 Ireland win. (Thinking it will be 2-1 or 2-2)

Thought so. 'Course, the way the French went on to play in the WC, they probably wish they hadn't qualified.

Holy shiat. Ireland is ranked ahead of the Swiss, Colombia, US and Mexico? How the hell can I never find them on TV?! Ten years I've liked International Soccer, and they never qualified for anything on my TV. I don't even.
