To be fair, the brief time I lived in the south, Publix seemed like a MUCH nicer place to eat than those places...

While I'm all for throwing the book at people, I can have sympathy for those that steal food. Nobody steals food unless they need it. We're not talking flat screen tvs or X-boxes.

Yeah, subby? Publix subs > every restaurant you named.

When I was living in Florida, a neighbor of mine went to Publix completely drugged out of her mind. I believe she was just on pain pills, but she was apparently so messed up she thought that just skipping check out and taking her cart full of groceries to her car was the smartest idea no one had ever tried before. She almost got to her car when security grabbed her. She was in jail for a while, then on work release for the rest of the year I lived there.

I had sympathy at first, but as I learned more about the family I realized that the money she didn't have to spend on food to feed her kids was actually going towards the pain medicine she didn't have a prescription for.

It was actually quite tragic. Everyone I met out there had a pretty depressing life.

Publix is seriously a damn nice place to do a grocery run... I can save money by going to Winn-Dixie, but other than the deli, Publix is superior in every way.

That's not true though, people steal food all the time that don't need it. See the group of vapid teenage girls who decided to dine and dash recently only to get locked out of their car. Not that needing food makes stealing ok, although it makes it more understandable.

Publix has Boars Head. Plus the sub counter and the hot food counter. Plus you don't have to deal with the toothless hillbillies that frequent Winn Dixie

While I'm sure she was stealing because of hunger, something tells me that real problem is that she is batshait crazy.

What the fark is wrong with her face? It looks like she had an allergy to something she ate. She should sue Publix for this.

Publix hot n' spicy wings, chicken tenders, subs, and rotisserie chickens are all fantastic. Plus, the Publix near me has a great chef for sushi. Add on the bakery, and I would rank Publix above any of those locations. Wish I could get a prescription for wings; I would use the drive through and sound fat.

THIS While not my first choice for eating out, Publix is a great grocery store. Very clean, bright and well organized.

/My first real job was at Publix
//Holy crap! That was 31 years ago!
///I suddenly feel very very old, guess I will have to stop by Publix tomorrow and pick up an onion for my belt.

She's a bag lady (obvious), should have escorted her out on sight or given her a half sandwich for free. If her hands were as filthy as her face, then everybody knew what she was gonna do...

I thought this was going to be about the incident in a Holmes Beach Publix a few weeks ago where w guy was leaving with an unpaid Cuban sandwich and was tackled and detained by the manager and a few employees. They knocked over a display and there were some minor injuries, and apparently now there's a big local controversy about whether or not shoplifters can or should be detained by force.

I agree, but the problem is if you caught her stealing and let her go she WILL be back for more and she WILL tell her friends and they WILL be trying the same thing as they will figure if they get caught nothing will happen. Remember, no good deed will go unpunished.

The better idea is for stores like that to take excess or unsaleable food and give it away to the homeless and hungry at specific times during the week. That food you were going to toss will do someone a world of good and would probably cut way down on shoplifting. Businesses should never throw away food, there are always fellow human beings that could use it.

/See, I'm not as cold hearted as you would have guessed. I mean me being a Republican and all.

I love publix, especially the one I go to. There is almost never a line to checkout. People there show enthusiasm to help you. It's like the anti walmart and they have the buy one get one free specials every week. Stealing from them just seems more wrong than stealing from most other places.

2012-06-10 06:08:46 AM
So she wanted actual food instead of food like substance?

no. u don't steel reserve (Food reserve)

I love Publix. Their sub sandwiches are made from Boar's Head meat, and are a damn sight better than anything Subway produces. Also, excellent chicken, cuban sandwiches, pretty much everything they make in their deli is reliably good. Publix is one of the few decent things about having to live in Miami.

Plus, anyone see their commercials? I don't know who their ad agency is, but they deserve some kind of reward. That last mother's day one was no exception.

I only dine and dash at copycat restaurants like the Fig Orchard, the Baked Goods Box, and Garnet Wednesday.

I've heard supermarkets (at least in the UK) are insured against spoilage, but only if they throw it away. They've gone as far as putting ratpoison over food in their bins to keep people from dumpster diving.

In short; throwing away is more profitable than giving it away.

I moved to New England from Florida last year. Publix (more specificially, its hot food, deli and cake departments) is probably the thing I miss the most. However, I now live just up the road from an AWESOME butcher shop that actually has pretty decent prices.

Still, though, I'm now craving a Publix sub.

Publix fried chicken is pretty amazing stuff. Great bakery too. And the best grocery store dine and dash was done by this guy:

That's not the newest idea. They can't do it legally for insurance/liability reasons. Not even the "socially conscious" stores will do that. The compromise (i hear) is to just leave your bins unlocked and look the other way until it becomes an issue. Thus dumpster divers.

I'm from an urban area, there is no "nice" way to handle it if there's dozens of homeless in the area. You just throw them out (hard so they know they can't get comfortable) when you see them. Any customer that protests is not a regular so it's okay if they don't come back. Sounds cruel, but when it gets rough they will run over and snatch food off of a customers plate and run.

This world is too hard.

The Publix in Sarasota across the bridge from Siesta Key is incredible. Great deli and incredible seafood counter and fresh sushi. Maybe we're a little biased because we are on vacation whenever we're there, but still. She wasn't slummin' it subby.

Heh, though I dont go around making sandwiches I will eat donuts, milk, veggies. Then bring the empty wrappers to the register. I ask for a discount on opened packages, but I never get one.

Whole Foods used to be a great place to go and snack. But they have long since removed most of the samplers.

And then comes the lawsuit because the food was 2 hours past its sell by date and someone got sick.
Not sick because of the food (they had 18 other medical issues going on), but lawsuit because they can.

I'm on my way to shop at Publix, so kick/reply. And their subs blow away any of the sub-based chains in the area.

As someone who likes to go to hotels, pretend to be a guest, then use the pool/sauna/gym, I have to say that it is best to go with the fancy ones. Going to a cheap one, if they suspect you are not a guest, you will get in trouble. With the fancy places, even if they suspect you, they will not say anything. The reason being that the fancy places have staff that are trained to be very tolerant of their guests behaviour. If you're paying $500-$900 per night, they will try very hard to treat you like you can do no wrong as long as it does not effect other guests. They don't want to take the risk, no matter how small, that you might be a guest. Naturally, the nicer ones have nicer facilities too, free food, massages, personal trainers.

So if you want to dine and dash, go to an $80 entrée place, not a $15 entrée place.

I live in a town with only a Winn Dixie. Will drive 18 miles to shop at Publix, instead.

2012-06-10 08:33:34 AM
Actually, your local food bank gets literally tons of donated food from these stores. Winndixie does so anyway here in Fl.

Living in homeless shelter so I know. Out of work since Jan. I am not above asking for help. The food is generally past /on/very near the sell by date.

Ie., some kettlecorn (popcorn indiana brand) snack bags have a 223/22/12 date but are still tasty.

2012-06-10 08:43:55 AM
Fried chicken, sweet tea, subs, awesome beer selection, and usually hot cashiers make publix a winner for me. Hell, even the publix brands are even great if you are looking to save a few box.

Even the retarded bagger can tell you where to find the most obscure item in the store.

Also, by far the best place to go MILF watching.
