Moonfisher: Beaten with a shoe and choked for 5 seconds? Around my 80s household we used to call that "getting off light."

So, you got off hard a lot of the time?

Purportedly.

No one can dispute that he died. Whether he came back as Zombie Jesus is another story.

I don't think there is definitive proof Jesus was one person or a mash-up of philosophers. I think we can agree "Jesus" existed as an idea but not necessarily as a person.

No more proof than there was an Alexander who conquered most of the known world. There is a lot LESS recorded history from Alexander's day about him than about Jesus. But, I digress. Regardless if he was deity, there is no way a person can live for 2000+ years. That was my point.

Yes, there are dicks all over but really, people like SNT should just pass on threads where Christians are being douches or join in on the attacks on extremist morons that make them look bad. Instead they take offense, never say a thing about the subject of the article and look like they are defending the dark side of Christianity.

True. He said "It amazes me to find an intelligent person who fights against something which he does not at all believe exists."

It amazes me that one who fought against an oppressive force would so marginalize a similar movement but religious people don't have to be intelligent.

What I think was ironic about Gandhi was that his message of peace and brotherly love was cut short by violence at the hands of an assassin. IIRC, Nehru was an atheist as well as a snazzy dresser who had a jacket named after him...

I don't think it is ironic at all. It was rather expected considering how much of a pain he was to the British Empire. Yes, I believe you are right, Nehru did appear to be an atheist. The jacket was named after him and he popularized the Gandhi cap.

I Googled Gandhi's quotes on atheism and found that most of them are found only on Christian-oriented sites. As for the quote above, there is no obvious source (Wikiquotes doesn't include it at all, not even as disputed or misattributed), and the only context at all that I've found is a claim that it was in response to a request for assistance in promoting "an anti-God organization." If so, then his gripe was more against the atheist equivalent of a fundie nutbag than against atheism itself.

But Gandhi did say, "I would have you brush aside all rational explanations and begin with a simple childlike faith in God....But I have no argument to address to those who have no faith." It looks like he understood the difference between faith and knowledge. Even if he believed atheists were wrong (and he did), he understood the folly of pressing the argument, which is something fundamentalists on both sides should learn.

Ghandi's opinion of atheists does not in any way invalidate the "I like your christ" statement. Not that I think that highly of your christ. After all, he condemned apostates to DIAF.

True. He said "It amazes me to find an intelligent person who fights against something which he does not at all believe exists."

He went wrong in that case. The fight isn't against something that doesn't exist, but against the idiots who not only believe in something that does not exist, but also want to force others to live by the rules of this something that does not exist.

I agree that it doesn't invalidate his other beliefs and certainly not his actions. If it were the case that he said what I quoted (which I will have to verify) then he was wrong. When people oppress you with their affirmative beliefs you are kinda forced to define yourself by the negative.

/Also, I agree with all here who say that Christians shouldn't press the point. Why should we fight so hard if we believe we are in the right already? All I have to say for anyone of any stance or none is: consider the evidence that be, empirical, logical, evaluatory, historical alike.
