Turns out the statute of limitations had passed so he was not charged. They said he was still undergoing a judicial review but I'm sure he's probably fine now.

Texas judge, not pastor. Unless there was another one than the one I am thinking of. She was of age by the time the story broke, so no foster care. And the statute of limitations had expired by the time the video was released so no criminal charges. We'll see after the next election whether he was douchy enough to lose his seat. Texas, though, so I doubt it.

The other day when there was that guy telling his students at their graduation that they're not special and Fark had a headline about the snowflakes finally getting what they deserved, I wrote that I had never seen a world where children are treated with too much kindness or given too much attention. This is what I was talking about. I had parents who never abused me, but in the town I grew up in as a kid, parents were just awful. It was commonplace to hear about kids being beaten with belts, kids having to cover for their drunken parents, etc. Basically, the town I grew up in was full of parents like this guy. Maybe there are some snowflake suburbs, but I think in general we have a long way to go in terms of ensuring the safety of children. We could start by closing the loopholes added to battery and assault laws that allow parents to hit their children and ending corporal punishment in schools. The fact that we are arguing about degree, in terms of how hard and with which implements should we be allowed to hit children and what color bruise can we leave, creates this ambiguousness in which children are commonly hit and commonly hit in erogenous zones at old ages (especially in schools and in the South) fairly hard. I don't see room for debate about degree. We don't need laws that make it OK for adults to hit each other as long as there's good cause or it's not too hard. Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if we did? If you could just punch someone in the face lightly because they got your burger order wrong? Insanity.

You're right. The Bible is very clear as to when you MUST sell your daughter into slavery and so on. Further, the daughter was in violation of a Commandment. She's going to Hell, by Christian standards.

First, even Jesus got pissed off, picked up a rope and started swinging and turning over tables when he got riled. So when it comes to WWJD, I'd say, if you get pissed enough and it's for a good cause, follow his example.

Second - I heard a radio announcer talking about this yesterday. He asked the question, 'How can a man run a million dollar church but can't control his daughter.' To which I can only refer him to Theodore Roosevelt who had a wild child daughter. When the press asked him why he, as president, couldn't better control his daughter, he replied: "I can either run the country or I can attend to Alice, but I cannot possibly do both."

Lastly, I think it's a pathetic shame that white people can kill young black men with little to no recourse (Trayvon Martin, Darius Simmons) but a black man cannot discipline his child the way he sees fit.

If the girl turned up missing, pregnant, on drugs or in any other trouble, he would be the first to get the blame. He shouldn't be blamed for doing what a parent should do when their kid gets out of line. White people won't discipline their own children and they refuse to respect cultural differences when it comes to other poeple checking theirs. If she's not dead and it's not repeated behavior then it's not abuse.
