First they installed the CCTV and red-light cameras... and I said nothing.

Then they ruled the sky with their drones of death.

Begun the drone war has.

In the Niven books they were rather large.

I'm thinking #9 shot. Small enough that you get a large number of projectiles with each shot, so you'll likely hit it, and it's fine enough that it won't hurt anybody significantly down range.

I bet there will be a whole host of people getting massively butthurt over this who also have absolutely no problem letting private companies have all of their information.

/If you have done nothing wrong you should still worry because it only takes the creation of a new law to make something you're currently doing illegal

I work on learning systems that understand and interpret video in faster than real time, so no only am I getting a kick, I'm facing a whole lot of employment security.

That said, the modern world sucks. When there's more cameras that people to interpret the footage, we've gone off the deep end.

NewportBarGuy: Begun the drone war has.

The sad thing is that there won't be any "drone wars". The people will quietly accept this destruction of privacy in exchange for a promise of greater security and less "crime". The few who do oppose it will be labeled as being anti-safety or anti-security, a practice already well established for promoting the safety and security industries and empire-building bureaucrats like the TSA.

Yes, indeed. Out of the millions of government workers, the "average ones" will use drones to spy on housewives. That's sensible. They'll all leave their administrative or service positions to use drones to look at shiatty tits, because the internet doesn't exist.

sure
but niven wrote about the free park over 9000 years ago when everything was large.
so the copseyes certainly were precursors to toner wars.

I think it is amusing that in their search for a "government drone" with which to compare a golf ball to, they used a picture of a Texas Sheriff's unit. Funny how local "community protectors" have military grade or better apparel.

But there are HUGE differences between voluntarily giving information to a private/public company and the government spying on the citizens.

On the other hand, I am in favor of injecting politicians, police, all public employees with tracker chips and having that information available in real time and historically.

hmmm, inject everyone!!
whenever there is an accident or a crime, you will have an instant witness list and probably suspects!!

sigh

Shouldn't the common man be able to purchase these for personal security observance and protection. A flight path around my house armed with poison darts will be sufficient..

My property is already covered by video streams. They're all fed into a system that can understand "normal" "not normal" which alerts me when something's up.

How would drones on the property help?

It doesn't work like that. It's hard enough to hit something the size of an ashtray at fifty feet. How the hell you going to hit a golf ball at five hundred? And five hundred is a generous assumption for your benefit

modern mini CCD equipment has a longer range than your shotgun. Sorry dude. A golfball at 500 yards? You'll never see it much less shoot it.

The main purpose of the detector is locating, identifying, and targeting female mosquitoes for the laser insecticidal device.

Not my fault if this is hard on the optics of unanticipated, trespassing devices which come too near.

Anathem was absolutely amazing. I've read the book at least 3 times.

README was pretty good but it didn't grab me as well as Anathem (but I'm far too burned out with MMO play thanks to WoW).
