Yeah, that caught my attention also. "I want a movie about fighting a man eating alien killing machine with acid for blood, but no guns." I am wondering if she at any time suggested ending Alien 3 with sitting the alien down and hammering out a peace treaty?

Reading about how she fights for anti-gun causes really ticked me off. My parents live on a farm in Oklahoma. They have two shot guns to protect themselves against any dangerous wild animal that might wander onto the farm. I really want her to explain to my parents how that's wrong and if she gets her dream, they will be defending their farm against wild animals with either spears or just hiding inside the house hoping that the wild animal or animals doesn't wreck everything and kill all their animals and live stock. That should make for a fun conversation.

I was watching my alien blu rays in preparation for Prometheus. First of all, if you have a blu ray player, you need to buy the anthology, its about 30 bucks for the UK version(all region and half cost of US version), it has the best transfers of older films I've ever seen as well as some of the most entertaining and numerous extras I've seen from dvd/blu ray.

Anyways... I watched the assembly cut of Alien 3 for the first time and it was a huge improvement over the theatrical cut, enough of an improvement to say the movie was a fitting end to an great trilogy. You could definitely tell Fincher was going on to greater things even if the movie didn't turn out like he hoped.

I think the assembly cut is a better version of Alien 3 in that it expands the otherwise relatively faceless characters, but it's still not a very good movie; if anything, it kind of underscores how cobbled-together Alien 3 is. Alien 3's biggest problem is just that it's ultimately pointless.

It's odd, people talk about movies that sound awesome but don't actually exist. Like a second and third Matrix movie and prequels to the Star Wars trilogy.

I don't know about that. Even if you discard Alien3 and Resurrection, happily ever after is just not in the cards for them. Prometheus establishes that your brain operates in a sleep-like state while in cryo. Ripley was having nightmares in Aliens. I doubt a repeat engagement with them that saw most of a military escort get wiped out will help with the nightmares on the trip home.

It does really frame Ripley from Aliens in a new light though. 60 years of sleep? 60 years of likely nightmare after nightmare of the Nostromo? A nightmare you can't wake yourself up from? It's amazing she wasn't just a babbling farking loon when they found her.

I highly doubt that when the human race sets out for the stars we will be bringing a device that strikes a primer in a cartridge that ignites powder that then uses gas to propell a lead slug for deadly effect. It wouldn't work in space anyway. Far more likely to have a mass propeller like a gauss gun or some type of laser weapon.

I wouldn't go quite that far, though I do agree that it does bring more to the film than the other scenes.

I've heard about the wooden planet before. Honestly, I think it sounds pretty cool, but it's a bit too out there for the Alien universe. Alien obviously takes a lot of scientific liberties with biology and physics (though props to Scott for having space be silent in the first film), but a wooden planet stretches it.

I think the idea would be great in a more overtly fantastical setting though, like 40K.

I've never seen a version of the film without these 3 scenes, and the sentry gun scene is the only one that doesn't bring much to the table.

Ripley learning about her daughter seems a big driving force for her (seriously, why cut that?), and seeing the guy get facehugger'd gives fans of the first film a "shiat's about to go down!" feeling.

Even the guns show the aliens absorbing a thousand rounds of ammo and still keep coming, so not a complete waste.
