(Slate)   So it's time to see if books and paper really do burn at 451 degrees Fahrenheit since Ray Bradbury's dead and it's been a slow news week   (slate.com) divider line 27

and now kids textbooks have fire retardant in them

Well actually raising the ambient temperature to 451 degrees as in an oven will cause paper products to self combust. You don't have to apply direct flame to it.

Oh for the love of sweet god damned jesus farking christ!

Maybe he should have named it Fahrenheit 451 or There Abouts, Unless There's a Lot of Moisture in the Air, or You are at High Altitude or You'd Rather Light a "Journalist" on Fire.

Start of the article:
OMG! He got it wrong

Middle of article:
Well, he's right but not ALL the time. Because sometimes it's moist or the paper isn't paper.

End of article:
This article sucks and we should feel bad.

Having been a CPS investigator for three years, I can verify textbooks have intelligence retardant in them.

Is SyFy Channel even still around?

I heard a host on CBC Radio 2 quote Bradbury as having said that he arrived at that number by calling a fire department and asking the person who answered the phone. I'm sure if he knew it would be debated decades later he would've called multiple universities, fire departments, and arsonists before taking the average (I'm joking).

Also, no sane person looks at a precise number like that and doesn't immediately realize that there are a lot of variables that would affect it.

In unrelated uncool-stories-bro, the best thing about reading Fahrenheit 451 in school was the introduction. Bradbury said it had come to his attention that parents and teachers with no sense of irony had put pressure on his publisher to release school editions that removed sections where the Lord's name was taken in vain. He assured us that he had put a stop to that and that the edition we held in our hands had the proper amount of swearing.

A bit verbose, but I like your title better. At least it ends all the pointless argument over the actual combustion point of paper.......

TheSpaceAdmiral: I heard a host on CBC Radio 2 quote Bradbury as having said that he arrived at that number by calling a fire department and asking the person who answered the phone.

There's a books on tape version of said novel where Bradbury both reads the book and is interviewed as an introduction. He makes the comment about speaking to someone at a fire department in that interview as well. It may be the same interview you mentioned, simply appended to the book.

/don't judge about the books on tape, I drive two hours a day

I only lately heard about this news, ie when I left the safety of my rock and went into society and found some internet, it came as a hard kick to the ribs as I only recently re-read Bradburys fantastic Martian Chronicles and was wondering if he had any new material on the way (yes I knew he was old but, hey).

I dont think it takes nearly such extreme temperatures to burn books, by the way. All one has to do to find proof is find videos of people burning books they find offensive, Ie, Mein Kampf, Watchtower magazines, and anything by Rowling. I dont agree of the burning of any books, but I've seen people burn the above items and more and it's really quite horrific. Oh I see, burning a book makes everything contained within it no longer exist, right?

Sorry, sorry, ranting..

Burning books is bad. They should just be recycled.
