Some 'Splainin' To Do: Dinobot: Some 'Splainin' To Do: Dinobot: Rarity doesn't get enough love -- it makes her cry
[encrypted-tbn2.google.com image 301x168]

I'm with you. Rarity pony is best pony.

[mylittlefacewhen.com image 95x100]
Indeed she is.

Because sharing is caring, I've got to tell you that she was my least favorite character when I first started watching. Of all the ponies, she seemed like she was going to be the most stereotypical one: the dumb, fashion obsessed type that I just can't stand watching.

"Suited for Success" completely changed my outlook on her. Instead of being a vague bimbo who was way too concerned about her appearance, she was revealed to be a serious professional woman and artist who put a tremendous amount of work into her craft. She does what she loves, but works her ass off to make it happen.

That alone really puts her over the top, in my book. She's the very definition of what a positive role model should be. Even as an adult, I can find relevance in that message.

(To say nothing of the secondary message that the customer isn't actually always right, and that giving them exactly what they want might not always be a great idea.)

And, if you want to dig deeper and do armchair psychoanalysis on Rarity, she's a pony who desperately wants to overcome her smalltown upbringing.

She's cultivated an uppercrust accent, even though her parents are decidedly midwestern working class ponies, she wants the acceptance of the high class Canterlot ponies, and she works hard trying to make a name for herself to escape her middle class roots. However, even though she can get embarrassed if someone like Hayseed Turniptruck outs her upbringing, she still won't abandon her friends.

I started the same way actually, although even by the end of Season 1 I didn't like her -- it wasn't until Sisterhooves Social that I started to see Rarity in a different light. After that I went back to S1 Rarity episodes and saw her in a different light; she went from least favorite to best pony right there and then.

The secondary message also struck me as relevant as well, once I paid attention to her character, as I'm incredibly OCD when it comes to my work, and I take great pride in it. In fact, I see myself reflected in several of her personality traits, including some streaks of histrionism (nowhere near as dramatic as her, but I do go into hyperboles if needed be).

Gleeman: Wisdomsage: I even have a list of episodes that the series is better without:

Just repeat to yourself: it's just a show. Just sit back and relax.

/besides, everyone knows Rarity is best pony

Ridiculous. If I am watching Justice League (the kickass animated version), and Superman is exposed to Green Kryptonite, I expect him to weaken. If he does not weaken, and there is no reason given, then 'sit back in relax' is bullshiat. The writers are obliged to make sense, or the fans will simply overrule them when discussing the content.

You cannot tell me with any honesty that you would find it okay for Superman to be stabbed with a Kryptonite dagger and be completely unharmed. That would be a load of shiat, and any viewer would say effectively the same thing.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: / That and Rarity totally has this cool Audrey Hepburn thing going on.

FirstNationalBastard: She's cultivated an uppercrust accent

It's called Mid Attlantic English/Accent, also known as Tidewater.

Tabitha St. Germain does a great job with it -- Kazumi Evans (the singing voice) not so much, although she has gotten progressively better.

That's certainly there to, and it's also something I can relate to. I come from a white/brown trash background, and I've always stood out and apart from my family, so I can understand her feelings. (My father always complained that I had campaign tastes on a beer budget.)

What's remarkable is that they manage to convey this without veering into making her a snob. She's class conscious, in that she really does prefer the finer things in life, but she just doesn't look down on those around her, most especially her friends.

As long as we're digging in to the character, can I say how cool it is that they've managed to subtly indicate that she doesn't really get along well with kids. She doesn't hate them, but she also doesn't relate to them. How utterly cool is it to have a female character who doesn't automatically get slotted into the mommy-in-training role?

Some 'Splainin' To Do: oh_please: Some 'Splainin' To Do: As a brony, I don't care if you don't like us. We have thick skins and we're totally used to being called as sorts of ugly things.

But you get all butthurt when someone points out that people may not universally accept you. That's not the definition of "thick skin", I suggest you grow one.

Why look, it's Mr. You-Didn't-Quote-My-Whole-Post, taking my reply out of context. Let me help you with the relevant bit. I'll put it in bold to help you out.

"As a brony, I don't care if you don't like us. We have thick skins and we're totally used to being called [all] sorts of ugly things. But, as a geek, I'm just a bit disappointed in your rush to judge other geeks for being weird. I expect better of my people."

But hey man, it's okay. Lot's of people have issues with reading comprehension. You're still a perfectly good person, I'm sure.

Why look, it's someone who didn't get the fact that I was doing what you were doing, and then you got all mad about it.

You're not getting what I'm saying here. It's cool, do your deal., just don't whine and cry when people don't like what you like. I was trying to tell you WHY people find it kind of creepy, and you get all butthurt. I'm not against you at all, but it seems like you think I'm trying to attack you. I'm not. BTW, your user name is awesome.

Well, it's interesting how well it plays out when you contrast her to the other consummate professional of the bunch -- Applejack.

You could probably attribute that to the fact that AJ is a middle child whereas Rarity is the first born of her family. And Rarity seems to be the oldest of all the main six (With Fluttershy and AJ following suit -- from what I can tell)

The difference is that I included the parts of your posts that were relevant to what I was saying, while you excluded the parts of my post that were relevant to what you were replying to. There's a small but crucial difference at play.

Every single step of the way in this conversation, I have responded calmly and rationally, addressing every single point you've raised with reasoned rebuttals. And every step of the way, you've accused me of being butthurt because I'm unwilling to accept that I'm never going to have "universal acceptance", in spite of the fact that I've clearly, and repeatedly, stated that I neither expect nor want any such thing. I'm sincerely perplexed by the fact that I haven't been able to successfully convey that to you and I wish that I could find some way to do so just because I hate leaving a communication gap like that unresolved.

Honestly, I don't know what your deal is, but you seem to be projecting a lot of expectations that I simply must be butthurt into my words so that you can validate your feeling that butthurt must be what I'm feeling. Frankly, I can't argue with that kind of circular logic, so I will simply concede that I'm not going to be able to convince you of anything on this topic so that we can spare ourselves the tedium of more pointless iterations. You are welcome to your opinions, sir, even though I think that they are based on some very bad presumptions.

I'm glad you like my handle, though. Yours is pretty cool, too.

I think that this all fits into one of the meta-themes of the show which is that there are a lot of different ways to be a person, and that there isn't a single one of them that's the right way for everyone.

Another example of this is Applejack and Fluttershy's stories from the Cutie Mark Chronicles. Applejack leaves home only to discover that her real place in the world is back where she came from, but Fluttershy leaves Cloudsdale and never really looks back because her new home is the right place for her.

Rather than trying to force an opinion of which one made the correct choice, it opts for the third position that both choices where correct, for those ponies. It's rare to see that kind of nuance in a show (and I'm pointedly not saying a kid's show, either).

Oh completely agree. Like I said before, the show it's really good. That it stars marshmallow ponies is completely circumstantial.

I could be wrong, but I think Rarity seems to be the one with the biggest range of expressions so far. I guess it comes hand in hand with being histrionic.

I just like really expressive characters.

Oh, to be certain. She's self-consciously dramatic, and that lends itself to an awesome range of expressions. As I said above, I really get a great Audrey Hepburn vibe off of the character.

Most of the knee-jerk haters have left, so we can have conversations about ponies without all of that distraction.

That, and there is bacon. Have a bite.

Civil chat + bacon. I'm ok with this.
I bet MLP fans get the same look I get when I tell people I'm learning to read and write Khmer.
