Yeah, but Coldplay kicks Radiohead's ass, much less something this surprisingly good.

And that

1985? Wow, even that early on you could see he was something far above average

He's younger than me - WTF are you saying?

At any rate, someone in that video was playing the hell out of the drums. I don't even like his band but gotta give him that.

whoa! that drummer is going to be good some day!

Kickass drumming, but the rest of the band is a shark sandwich.

have absolutely no idea who originally filmed this but full credit to them for actually filming a huge amount of the show (I have no idea how much of the start is missing?) with what would've been a huge mid-1980s camcorder!

I'm guessing somebody's mom.

I like Grohl, but I was expecting crap. Crap high school band, crappy quality, etc.

But i was BLOWN AWAY.

Other posters are right, his style hasn't changed.
Also the quality is surprisingly good.

The vocalist/guitarist and bassist are pretty awesome for high schoolers too. and Great songs.

That seemed eerily out of place for 1985. It sounded like early foofighters, but that wasn't going to happen for almost another decade. Something tells me Dave had a hand in writing the songs.

As far as what was going on commercially? Yeah, but it has a pretty strong resemblance with a lot of the post-hardcore stuff that was coming out in the mid 80's (Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Big Black etc.). It just shows that Grohl has always had really good instincts for being out in front of what was new and interesting as far as music was concerned.

Dave should get the old band together and re-record some of these for a Record Store Day or something.

2012-06-09 06:06:51 PM
Wow.. Even that young Dave still looked sick on drums and as mentioned for above average for a high school kid.. I love his "The drum set just insulted my mother and they must die now.. While staying in rhythm" style of drumming.

Staying in rhythm is a drumming style?

Yes, it was strange - like they were playing mainstream rock from the future.

I know it's been stated that alternative rock had a lot of influence from punk - but another interesting aspect of the sound from the mid/late 80's is the fact that this is the first generation of kids to have affordable multi-track technology in their homes via 4-track cassette recorders. Traditionally, multi-track recording had been reserved for paid studio time and strictly recording pre-written pieces (in general).

Not only did 4-tracks lead to experimentation, but it also presented a unique style of writing not present before in being able to lay down an instrumental foundation and even punch-in manually over certain parts of a recording, building upon with other tracks. That 4 track by-product eventually welled up into the mainstream.

It's worth noting that, in case you didn't know, that Grohl recorded the entire first album by himself, then pitched it to the record company.

Or just out of high school. The guy singing, Reuben, is my age and I knew him through Jr. high. Then I think he went to an alternative high school, but he would have just graduated earlier in 85.

This band is an evolution of a previous band that included 3 other guys I went to school with here in Arlington, back as far as elementary in some cases. When everybody graduated in 85 a couple went away to college, and the band in the video formed out of what was left. The weird thing is I never knew this tie-in story with Grohl until just a couple of days ago.

I'll admit, never cared much for his stuff.
But, Jesus farking Christ. I've never seen a 16 year old kid play any instrument like that in my life.

/Mad respect.

I've seen some guys in high school and university play like that. And you just KNOW they are going to do something important and good.

...........but then they decide making art that people enjoy is too much like "selling out" and reject a record deal, the chance to play live shows whenever and wherever they want, and an escape from having to lead the life they hate and instead just smoke a lot of pot.

That was awesome.... REAL grunge. There's a fair amount of flannel in the crowd too.

Actually, it sounds like 99.9 percent of the rock you could hear in clubs in the 1980s.

I was 15 at the time in New Orleans and spent quite a bit of time listening to good and bad bands for 2-3 dollars a pop at Tipitinas, Jimmys, and a slew of other dive bars.

You may have seen Dash Rip Rock then, which strangely some of this stuff reminds me of.

1985? High School? They must have been in a college town because garage bands didn't sound like that in '85. Industrial/College radio music was still way underground and pretty much unpopular for high schoolers...but that's good stuff.
