So speaking of The Doctor's companions... I recently ran through the modern series on Amazon. I was my first exposure to the series, and I really like it. One thing confuses me though. Every time I see a poll on who the favorite companions are, the top three are Rose, Donna, and Martha. How in the hell is that stupid, shrill harpy, Donna Noble, favored over the smart, sexy and capable Martha?!?

Some people like characters that are normal, not super human. Well, they all are in the modern Who except for Martha. Also, no Pond?

1) By the time Donna came along, we had had two young companions who spent all their time having crushes on the Doctor. It was irritating as hell. Donna was a welcome relief because she was in no way attracted to him. She just wanted to travel around and see shiat.

2) The Doctor was a broody mess after Rose. Donna kicked his ass until he snapped out of it. He would have remained completely over it if it hadn't been for the whole Russell T. Davies fanboy send-off wankfest that was the two part season finale of season 4.

spoiler-free answer: Donna went through enormous character development during her time with the Doctor, and was a very different person at the end, than when she started.

(i've convinced this is also why Rory was such a breakout character.)

Martha, not so much.

MoparPower: Also, no Pond?

Most of these polls seem to be pre-Pond. I'm certainly a Pond fan. :)

Most of these reasons just don't make sense to me. There's just something about her voice that's like a dull drill grinding through my skull.

srtpointman: I've never had a chance to watch this and I know that it has been around for a while now. What's a good season to start on with this show? Can I just jump in anywhere and figure out what the hell is going on?

I'd start at the begining of the modern series (2005?). There's a surprising amount of continuity across the whole series so you never know when you'll stumble across a character or concept you're supposed to know. It's all quite entertaining, though.

That's actually NOT how I did it. I started with season 6. I liked that, but wanted more of the Pond/Rory back-story so I went back to season 5. Then I did 1-4.

Oddly enough, this means I saw the episodes in roughly River's chronology. Made certain scenes especially poignant for me.

skyotter: (i've convinced this is also why Rory was such a breakout character.)

Definitely agree.

I liken Rory to the guy who is playing a table top RPG for the first time. Has no clue at all what to do in the beginning, then stumbles into a great story arc during which the player realizes what can happen with characters when you develop them.

I can see how Martha's mooning could be distracting, but it was never a big deal to me. I guess I just really dislike loud people and could never get past that with Donna.

I think her popularity has less to do with her than it does with Rose stinking up the place for so long.

I believe Amy and Rory are supposed to be leaving about a third of the way through the upcoming season and River will make at least one appearance.

Sad to be losing a nice redhead with a taste for short skirts. Will reserve judgement on the next companion (looks pretty, but we shall see she is like and the character is), but would really like to get an alien or something for a companion for a while, not some [apparently] normal, present day human thrust into crazy circumstances. The closest was Jack and he was still distinctly human, lets get an alien or a robot. Or somebody like Wilfred Mott on for an extended period of time).

As for Donna Noble, I understand why people liked her character, but I can equally understand why nobody can stand her because I simply cannot stand watching or listening to Catherine Tate.

The problem is most storylines take place on earth (easy for sets and stuff), and fitting an alien into normal society isn't all that easy.

Still hoping Romana comes back from E-Space - she's a Timelord who is outside the Time Lock.

I agree. School Reunion made the room all dusty for me... including the tin dog.

See Rory & Donna are somewhat similar. At their core, they're not traveling the universe because of The Doctor; they're traveling the universe in spite of The Doctor. Both see The Doctor as a fundamentally flawed person; Donna sees him as dangerous and Rory sees him as a romantic rival. In the end, however, they're both fairly normal people (losers even) that eventually become better than themselves.

By contrast, Donna, Martha, and Amy all just want to nail The Doctor.

He's what Sergeant John Benton could have become if he had a gal to protect. Unlike the other ass-kickers (Jamie, the Brigadier. Leela, and Ace), Benton was just completely cool and calm under pressure and in the midst of violent action. As would be the case with Rory in "Vampires of Venice", when Benton first entered the TARDIS in "The Three Doctors" he felt no need to point out the obvious, that it was bigger on the inside than the outside. The Third Doctor reacted the same way toward his lack of comment as the Eleventh did toward Rory's acceptance of the same situation.

Benton never struck the Doctor, like Rory did in "The Big Bang", but again, Benton never had a sweetheart to protect.

Toby Whithouse and Steven Moffat missed a nice opportunity to tie the characters together at the end of "The God Complex". The Doctor could have made a mention of the used car dealer from whom he bought the car for Rory.
