A little inside info here...from my editing buddy at NPR. Oftentimes a bunch of the classic (*to some) "guffaw-style" laughter is simply edited into the show for effect. It's a running joke to see how much they can sometime put in. Not that the brothers don't laugh like that a lot, but the editors MAKE SURE the "laugh quota" is met or exceeded.

As far as them being missed, I kinda got tired of the schtick a few years ago - but they were my "go to" radio program when out running errands on Saturday mornings for a long goddam time! Always used to be way bummed when it came time for the program to end and I heard the lamewad Michael Feldman queue up.

Once I found out about the 'canned' laughter, some of the polish came off the apple. I was also given some other choice insider gossip about the brothers behavior that turned me off to their "brand". But hey, it's entertainment...and they performed well enough!

Ever listen to a recent episode, everybody calling the show was driving a car from 1992. Recently the shows were being distilled into a 'best of' calls that listeners sort of remember.

Even the producers of the show claimed to state this was their way of sunsetting the show for NPR.

/The show was really over probably about 4-7 years ago.

Seconded - the motorcycle hate also annoyed me. It's okay to smoke cigars but motorcycles are instant death. The inhale-pig snort noise seemed to become more prevalent in the last few years. I pretty much stopped listening to them a while back.

Unfortunately, I end up hearing a couple of minutes of them every week so I don't miss the begining of "Wait - wait".

Fix it up, AND SELL IT!

Most entertaining radio show on the air.

We could just replace them with Cheech and Chong no one would see a difference.

Well, other than the fact that Cheech died twenty years ago and was replaced by the more respectable Mr. Marin.

Now I'm really kicking myself for not donating when they were offering Car Talk baseball jersies. I really wanted one but the donation they were asking for was too rich for my blood. I should have taken out a loan or borrowed from my parents.

I liked them, but NPR needs some new blood.

My favorite thing they did.

Them, Cheech Marin, and George Carlin in the same movie. Pixar new how to give our children subversive role models.

//I love it.

First Dick Clark, now the Tappit brothers?

Those Mayans sure are pricks

gunther_bumpass: They're not my favorite, and I get a little irritated that they take about 3 calls during the course of the show, (two of which are from some twits arguing with their spouse over glove compartment space), but anything that isn't Garrison farking Keillor is ok with me. Listening to that maudlin, pug-faced, unfunny, loudly-inhaling bastard is only slightly less boring than eating a cardboard and dust sandwich. Fark that guy and the stupid-ass socks he sleazed into town in.

Amen to that on GK. That show has an even lower funny-to-crap ratio than the current SNL.

It feels like what WWDTM would be if it had no charisma or panelists.

Oh, God, THIS.

Gonna miss Click and Clack, but given that I started listening 5 years ago, there's a good 20 years of cartalk reruns i'll have to catch up on.

I love dogs, but damn if the dead-dog story wasn't one of the funniest things I've ever heard on the radio.

I'll miss these guys, even with all the crazy laughter, they had a very entertaining show.

I will miss my favorite staff members too:

Latin American Bullfighting Specialist Gordon Diaz
Manager, Donkey Based Video Equipment Cameron Diaz

While I do greatly enjoy Radiolab, they have a habit of presenting one hypothesis as if it were accepted fact (The Right Of Spring analysis comes to mind)....and it makes me second guess everything I hear.

They don't say the "National Public Radio" bit anymore, I think. Which is a little disconcerting to me, as I'm still expecting it. At least PRI still does the "P-R-I, Public Radio, International" bit still.

I've probably learned all that I know about cars from them, so this makes me sad

Seconded - the motorcycle hate also annoyed me. It's okay to smoke cigars but motorcycles are instant death.

When the weather got nice here this spring, I counted over two dozen motorcycles before I finally saw someone wearing a helmet, so instant death might not be far off. Shorts and t-shirts? Check. Helmet? Hell no.

Also, I feel like there's a lot of reasons to listen to NPR - The Diane Rehm Show and Talk of the Nation seem to be how I manage to stomach 95% of my political discussion these days.

/Surprised how often I hear something on Fresh Air I didn't think I'd enjoy but really did, like a few recent musical interviews

Annoyingly, I'm not sure when (or IF) the local NPR station plays the Diane Rehm show, which is a shame.

Oh, it was on NPR. No wonder I never heard of it.

Why have so many PBS-like commercial networks become profitable while PBS itself flounders. Not asking for partisan answers but it can't be just commercial money making it better. Or maybe capitalism isn't so bad; better than constantly begging, huh, PBS?

IggyFan: You and your wife have different homes?

Nah, we abandoned our land line years ago. We have different *phones*. I used the old phrase as a nod to the early days of WWDTM, even they don't use that phrase any more. I won my recording in the first season, and it came to me on cassette tape! It was a proud day when I put Carl Kassel on the machine doing a BDSM bit ending with the line "And they'll get back to you, when they're not... tied up!"
