fnordest: His punishment is a cot to sleep on and hopefully a meal or two.
GibbyTheMole: My wife & I were talking about superstars who have megamansions all over the world and blow a milliion bucks on a car. We decided if we suddenly became super-rich, we'd build or buy simple apartment buildings in different areas and find homeless people who legitimately want to get out of their situation. Put them up for a few months, help them find employment, and buy cheap food for them to subsist on 'til they get on their feet. Maybe try to get donations to make it a thing that would be sustainable. Of course, if they were just a lazy ass who just didn't want to work, they'd have to go to make room for someone else. But, we're permanently poor as church-mice, so it's moot.
Felix_T_Cat: Sunday night a homeless girl called and begged for diapers, wipes and blankets. She had found another girl with a toddler and boyfriend that had become homeless that day. None of the women's shelters could take her. We had already distributed about 20 blankets that weekend, but found more in the back of a closet and headed out. One of the guys flagged us down, we picked up the couple and toddler and brought them to an encampment of safe people. The mom was crying and we did our best to reassure her that it was "just for the night" and "would be like camping." Called a social worker who went out the next day.Our church goes out with social workers 1 night a week and as a church once or twice a month. The goal is to bring people back in to community so that they will start to trust and accept social services. We can reach some of the people that mistrust the workers. We also make it safer for the workers who were afraid to go into some areas alone. We do the 'pastoral', clothing, food and some of the medical, while the workers arrange housing, medical and other services.Have pretty often had families or a couple of guys living in the kitchen of my little apartment. We've had a break through with a group living in railway tunnels. We saved them from tunnel flooding after a railway worker had burned their previous above ground camp. Even before that, they were really beginning to trust us. They worry about our safety and direct us to new people that show up./'s been wonderful and heart breaking.
