Like every industry, it will adapt to the new conditions. It's a multi-billion dollar industry, but it is changing. Keeping to the same business models when conditions change is not solid business practice.

True, competition has swelled and that makes it hard in any industry. It takes a gentle touch to find your customers' sweet spot, but having a desirable product means they'll come again and again to lap up your offering. The key is to thrust forward to find the right technology that will give them what they want--what they need--whether it's conventional technology or a back-door breakthrough that they weren't expecting but find surprisingly enjoyable.

Sometimes there's a serious quality deficit in the free stuff, but some people just want to get their freak on in front of the camera and you wind up with some great footage.

And as a message to all attractive women in their 20's, a digital porn will still look as hot when you're old and wrinkled.

How come all women who appear in adult films are "stars"? Really they are just whores who get filmed while they work.

Maybe there are a half dozen who are "stars" the rest are just spooge catchers.

Time to start referring to them as "porn whores" instead of "porn stars."

The porn industry has to realize that:
- there will always be a market
- there will always be people willing to give it away for free
- the only way to compete with free is better production values

I think for any venture to survive in that industry it must be prepared to make multiple penetrations into the market. Have they considered the BBC?

Porn is more resilient to changing media than movies, for example. It'll adapt to whatever new stuff comes out. There's money to be made, but it won't be as easy as it used to be.

What the article is talking about, though, is Internet piracy, in which case your production values will only result in your initial sales; once someone burns it and distributes it, your high-quality pr0n sales will fall to a trickle.

How is it that the internet has been around for a few decades, and people are still paying for porn? I mean, if you're a brazillian fart fetishist I could see having to pay to satisfy a niche, but if you like amateur stuff? Or anything but the top-shelf actual "stars"? Why?

Yup. This is essentially all they need to realize.

Free stuff is great and sometimes there's some real gems there. But mostly the people filming the free stuff have no idea what to do with the camera so you see not so much of what you want to see and more of what you don't want to see. Plus they are usually lower quality footage.

And that's not even taking into account all the stuff where the people forgot to turn the light on so we can't see much of anything at all or the stuff with people that most of us don't want to watch having sex.

Niche stuff can also represent a small life-line for the companies too. Sometimes it's impossible to find certain stuff for free in any good quality on the net. And no, I'm not talking about really vile stuff. Sometimes even some softcore stuff just isn't anywhere except for pay sites.

Because I met a certain Mr. Wiseman, who gave me a job in his shop. And before long, he tapped me to do some small roles in some of his short films for more mature audiences. And before long, I had landed, if you will, some leads. And then I started to do some, uh, cameos. Um, well, I was known for, uh, doing a certain thing that many of the other girls wouldn't do."

You'd be surprised the kind of stuff that can't be found on free streaming sites or torrents. Yes, you are right, any particular sex act known to man can be found in some form for free and usually found really easily too. But lets say you wanted to see one particular sex act performed by a person of a particular nationality. Then perhaps you also prefer certain body types. That starts to narrow things down quite fast.

Sometimes it's a case that yeah, it might possibly be out there somewhere for free. But after you spend half an hour or more searching and finding dead ends, dodgy looking torrents and wrong links, the pay site seems like the better option.

Old news is old. The obvious tag must be on vacation. There's no way a company can make money selling what can be had free on the Intertubes. I don't think anyone is foolish enough to pay for porn anymore. And full length files, I read, are no longer desired. Guys only need seven to 12 minutes to jerk it and this is the length of most porn clips, which is about all most people look at anymore.

this is no simple 'paradigm shift', they need to position themselves now to weather the coming storm. These are the proverbial barbarians at the gate, this will be a long, hard battle that won't be easily won. The professionals have the advantage and can still come out on top, but the amateurs will bang away at their ivory towers in a relentless barrage of blunt-ended attacks. The amateurs have the advantage of a decentralized, widely spread work force that can't be easily ignored or contained. Whereas the professionals have the advantage in size and stamina... and they've experienced things like this in the past... they will have to turn every trick in the book to put the amateur horde in their places. This will leave both parties on their backs, weakened and struggling to recover but in the end they will be forced to find a way to coexist.

If pornographers want to make money, they need to market to people who will spend money. The nearly endless supply of young women with drug problems doing disgusting, depraved things in gonzo-style films caters almost exclusively to young men and/or creepy perverts.

Young men and/or creepy perverts aren't going to pay.

Instead of the endless march towards progressively viler fetishes, porn needs to class it up. Straddle (ahem) the line between porn and art. No one is going to proudly display their collection of cumshot montages, but there are more progressive people out there, even successful people, who wouldn't be ashamed to be seen with tasteful softcore porn.

Sure, you might get fewer viewers, but you'll get many more paying viewers. You'll get older people, women, married couples, and people who care about production values more than just ashamedly spanking it as quickly as they can.

Louis Theroux has a way with people that I find faintly mystical. People get comfortable and become their natural selves very quickly around him, especially women. I know it's edited but still, within a few minutes they're talking, and after a few hours they're a wide open book. That's a very rare skill. Sometimes he fakes it when people get racist or ugly but over all he 'seems' sincerely curious.

Big fan of his work.

Someone has to pay for the quality loads of porn to slowly drip down the cracks to the masses. Those girls don't all work for free.

So a big thank you for all the people who have paid for porn since the mid 90's

I'm all about the free porn (re: my post), but sometimes you don't have access, or want to go about it in a different way. When my wife said she'd watch porn with me, I wasn't about to hop on youporn or what have you to "browse" for something she liked- we went to the porn store, where she could laugh about the "weird" stuff, and pick something she though she'd like without having to wade through drek. The DVDs she picked out were stupid cheap, and the production values and "classy" factor were leagues better than anything I could have found online with any ease. She doesn't want to have to look at chicks swapping and gaping to find "two hot lipstick lesbians going at it".

As with any product that you have the option of paying or not paying for, it's a matter of ease and convenience. Would I ever pay for porn for personal use? Absolutely not. If my wife says she found an "advanced sex techniques DVD" on amazon that she wants us to "try", am I going to spring for the DVD? Sure- but only after I've determined a torrent isn't available.

I saw you in the Texas pedo woman thread white knighting the pedo, so I can only assume your fetish is hopefully not as abundant. That's about as much as I want to talk fetishes with the likes of you.

Yup, this is where the market is going, and it makes sense. But, it will never be the billion doller gold mine it was in the seventies and eighties again.

That comment, and your post, made me smile, because I'm thinking about the arguments about how pirating is so cool because people who pirate songs and movies and shiat are more likely to buy songs and movies and shiat.

What's the disconnect between the nobility (and potential income stream) born of non-porn piracy....... versus exploitation 'no honor between thieves'/'you ain't getting paid' mindset born of porn piracy? How does a society change its culture, so that the men, young and old, performing the majority of piracies are willing to pay no matter what the end product is that is initially being stolen?

This is the reason the porn industry cannot make any money anymore. Amateurs have taken over. It's do easy to get the meth addict chick in the next apartment to fark your buddy and let him piss in her mouth for her next hit of crank - just film it and put it up on Xtube. Full length films cost a lot more to make and the "stars" won't do the more disgusting things.

In case you hadn't heard, there's already a glut of softcore out there, already...has been, at least since there've been movies.. And actually, a fair number of hardcore actors, those who aren't the most wooden actors in the world, will eventually transition to softcore (for the money).
