The motion, moved by Coun. David Shiner, a member of Ford's own executive committee, says retail stores can't provide customers with "single-use plastic carry-out [shopping] bags, including those advertised as compostable, biodegradable, photodegradable or similar effective Jan. 1, 2013."

I don't recall having ever agreed with Ford on anything, but everything after the word "including" makes that motion freaking ridiculous.

Go check out the comments on the Toronto Sun website. People are losing their minds. You'd think they'd banned oxygen and puppies.

"If there was a couple hundred thousand people down at Nathan Phillips Square saying they want plastic bags back, yes, then the councillors will listen," said Ford

The P-Bagger movement.

The only way this'll happen is if they coordinated the plastic bag protest with the next Leafs Cup win celebration.

Nope.... I detest the guy. Pure, grade A, free range hatred. But he's got the right end of the argument on this one (finally). I could totally see mandating the replacement of single use plastic bags with single use bags that degrade in whatever way... but this is preposterous.

I oppose the outright ban for no other reason than the fact that sometimes I need to carry things in a bag and I don't have a canvas bag with me, and plenty of stores don't sell canvas bags, leaving me SOL.

However, watching Blob Ford's reaction to this has been pretty funny.

Shiner, Berardinetti and Robinson are "people who are supposed to be in the middle of the road - obviously they're very far left," Ford said.

Yeah, because if they don't agree with one thing you want, they are at the extreme end of the spectrum.

Siiiiiiigh.

But what I want to know is if the ban on plastic bags will mean that the Leafs will win the Stanley Cup this century.

But I reuse those bags as garbage backs to put in all of the cardboard and plastic packaging that came with the electronics I just bought.

If I lived in Toronto and happened to forget my canvas bags in the car/apartment I'd walk over to the cleaning aisle and buy a pack of kitchen trash bags and put all my shiat in those. You know those kitchen trash bags, the things a lot of people havn't bought in years because they reuse plastic grocery bags for that purpose.

With rare exception, I haven't acquired a plastic grocery bag in years. I'm not just talking about groceries though; the ban extends to all retailers.

If it also sets off Sue Ann Levy, then I'm all for it.

I wonder how many times she fit "Socialist Silly Hall" in to her latest column, the whiny biatch.

I'm loving watching Ford slowly go insane and lose vote after vote, followed by more loss of sanity and temper tantrums.

The fact that this ban was proposed in the way it was, much less that it actually passed, shows just how much Mayor Ford has lost touch with council. He's completely alienated them, and they keep tossing him these little fark you's as a result. I'm another Torontonian who's against this ban, but loving watching our idiotic mayor twist and squirm and sputter over this. He's got a really cute way of making up "facts" on the spot, and catching his lies is great sport.

Sure it's penciled in for the same year that the Chicago Cubs win the world series, the Philadelphia Eagles win the Superbowl and Tim Tebow sets the all time pro-football passing record.

Maybe the Mayans had it wrong...that confluence of events would result in the end of the world.

Came to make this point. I think it will rescinded before January. Mayor McCheese make me long for the humility and class of Mel Lastman.

Apparently those biodegradable bags can actually be pretty bad for the environment, and in any case need special conditions to biodegrade. Wiki.

Anyway, I'm neutral on the ban on its merits, but in principle have to support absolutely anything that makes Rob Ford throw one of his batshiat temper tantrums. I thought his suggestion that 200000 people should march on city hall in favour of plastic bags was particularly special. I hope Sue-Ann Levy organises one. It'll be just like the March on Washington, except stupid.

I hope Rob Ford tries to get rid of more bike paths next. We'll end up with the best network in North America.

The Sue-Ann levy hate in this thread pleases me. Anytime I accidentally get a free Sun and don't go right for the sports section I almost always end up saying 'wtf?' at whatever redneck right wing nonsense she's spewing that day. Ford's dick is permanantly lodged in her throat it seems.

That said, I use those bags for my garbage, and a ban does seem impractical as much as I love the idea for the environment. We'll see if it takes effect I guess.

I really haven't been paying attention to all of this, but has Ford brought up the bag surcharge that we have now? I know that when he first came into office he announced he wanted to get rid of it because he didn't like having to pay for bags, and it was one of the reasons the city is in debt. So instead of repealing a ban that didn't cost the city any money, he's upped the ante by banning all plastic bags outright, by spending money to get it on the books.

I really can't wait for him to drop dead of a heart attack, get busted at a leaf/jays game for public intoxication/hate speech, or finally get arrested for beating his wife. Note: I don't want his wife to be beaten, but it's pretty well known he does after a number of domestic violence investigations against him.

Ok, so I RTFA, that was a pretty smooth move by the councillors after Ford yanked the bag cost.

Serial: Oh look, Ford was the only member of council to vote against accepting $350k (not a loan) from the federal government to continue a gang prevention task force.

Of course he was.

I do have to credit Ford with one thing. I no longer have to think at all when I follow city hall politics. If Ford hates something, I'm for it, even if it means I have to carry my groceries home in my bare hands. And if Ford likes a policy, I'm agin' it, purely on principle. I've saved lots of time and energy this way. Also, since I became resigned to the fact that nothing useful will get done in this town until we turf him out, I've stopped being so upset and just started treating city hall as an expensive comedy show. It's pretty good. I mean, it's not the Carol Burnett show in its heyday funny, but definitely better than your typical sitcom.

2012-06-08 09:44:40 PM
2012 Mayor Ford:
"It's the people's fault. Honestly, sometimes I get so frustrated because the people are just sitting back listening. They don't pick up the phone, they don't go down to city hall, they don't ask questions, they just ... it's frustrating,"

And yet, just last year, his own brother, Doug, was bashing Margaret Atwood for doing just that that in defense of libraries that were on the chopping block... "She's not down here, she's not dealing with the problem. Tell her to go run in the next election and get democratically elected. And we'd be more than happy to sit down and listen to Margaret Atwood."

Idiots, the both of them.
