2012-06-07 01:22:46 PM
Poor girl, she panicked so bad, someone had to full-on tackle her to get her to stop, drop and roll...

When I was a kid, I was playing with matches and Coleman Fuel, because I was a really smart feller... Anyway, some of that fuel got on me and started burning, and I totally freaked. I got lucky, that stuff burned but didn't burn me, once I got it out, my arm didn't even feel warm. Like I said, I got lucky.

I'm impressed when people pull this off, takes some big balls, that's for sure....

Well, that was worth watching. I love how that guy tackles her as she's running for the water. I guess he smashed her face in the grass to put the fire out? The water wasn't much further, maybe she would have preferred that.

There used to be a troupe of fire clowns around where I live. (That's not an insult--they actually were fire clowns) The stuff they did seemed pretty crazy, but their leader was a certified fire safety inspector, and they always had about a zillion fire extinguishers on hand.

I'm part of a fire troupe that does this sort of thing, and I noticed a few things:

- The article had it wrong: She wasn't trying to blow out the flames at the end of her performance, she was fire breathing while spinning poi. The poi were in front of her face to ignite the fuel as she sprayed it from her mouth.
- She didn't appear to have anyone on fire safety, or they weren't paying attention. Normally there would be someone with a fire blanket or wet towel poised to put her out if anything happened. Perhaps she ran to where they were, I couldn't see that, but it seemed more likely that she panicked.
- Not sure why she had so much fuel on her face... didn't seem like she was spraying into the wind -- maybe she had to much in her mouth and a little dribbled onto her chin. Seems like even more was on her gloves (or more likely still in her mouth and she spit it out in surprise onto her gloves).

In short, poor safety practices combined with panic. She's lucky the guy tackled her and put her out, could have been a lot worse.

bikerbob59: I liked how only one person in the crowd helped her.

Well, keep in mind that if you were watching something like this, you would probably assume they knew what to do, or that their partner/trainer/spouse would know what to do and would be ready to jump in, and then you might just get in the way and make things worse.

Once it was clear that she was panicking and left the roped off area, she really only went by 2 or 3 people.

It's not always because people are selfish A-holes. Now, if there were a bunch of people who whipped out their cell phones after she caught on fire, that would be different.

Wear the right clothes, (NO POLYESTER, leather always a plus)
Use the right fuel (lamp oil for newbs, Kero foe the experienced)
and take the right precautions (The safety to your left crouching down witht he towel in his hand is your friend)

and Fire Spinning in all its infinte variations is perfectly safe. Been running an event that has hundreds of fire spinners attend, and we've had exactly one serious fire-related injury in ten + years (and that was because someone borrowed another spinner's chains, resoacked them in white gas rather than lamp oil, AND let the chains and handles get soaked not just the heads.)

Once upon a time in my younger college days, I was a manager at a video rental store, and after closing the other employees and I would play a game called "find the weirdest porn". I was always the winner with pregnant porn, midget porn, toilet sluts 13, etc. But one day my friend pulled up one with a dominatrix chick on the front. I scoffed and asked "what's so weird about that...prude". Then he turned the cover around to a man fully engulfed in flames in a parking lot. Game over man. Game over.
