Get ready for war. Unemployment is still high. The economy appears to be teetering on the brink of recession or worse. Election season is here.

I don't know what the World's deal is with Syria. I mean, it seems like there's a lot of political handwringing and admonition, but little to no action. Meanwhile, we get pictures and videos of civilians, including women and children, who are being slaughtered by their own government. Further, where is the righteous indignation on Fark that we saw during the Libyan revolt...and the Iranian protests in the past.

I guess everyone is tired of the war and we're just gonna wish all of those Syrians "bon chance" and sit back while we watch...right?

Just when you had a good rythm going he'd jump the wrong direction to his death.

Complicating factors:
Russia - Thinks Syria is it's Middle East area of control.
Iran - backs the Syrian regime as a proxy state.
China - Doesn't want its ability to suppress its population should things heat up, to be under the scrutiny of the UN.

Thus, in this one situation, the old and new cold war balance of powers culminate together to create a currently insurmountable gordian knot. Unfortunately everyone's hands are tied, as they don't want a small shooting war to escalate into a situation like the failure of the Ottoman Empire lead to the eventual WWI possibility with the new WWIII weapons.

Unfortunately, the non-alloite Syrians, are the ones who will have to bear the brunt of this, until enough non-traceable weapons/equipment comes in from the outside (Saudia Arabia, Iraq and elsewhere) to bring the balance of power up to equality and then a political solution can be implemented. Or Russia and China decide to blow off Iran, and give up their other objections to the UN, and hope that they won't be the next countries to come under scrutiny the next time a Georgian Crisis or Tiannamen Square Incident comes up.

Syria is just the mess nobody wants to spark the next big one from.

I was going to answer this, but then Acravius went and did a better job.

Basically, as powerful the US/UK/France (+various NATO hangers-on) alliance is on the rare occasion all three agree on something, we can't go trouncing in on a regional Russian ally, even if China was sitting on the sidelines, which they're not. The world isn't that unilateral.

Like it or not, Syria is a local and/or Russian problem. It's out of NATO's reach as long as Russian warships and Marines are camping out in Tartus.

Additionally, there aren't a whole lot of organizations in Syria that are ideologically friendly to the West. Assad is a brutal motherfarker, but the main opposition is made up of the same Syrian Islamists that made Iraq such a clusterfark. Not the kind of people we need to be propping up, on either side.

Looks like the Syrian government's stuck on repeat.

Mass killings? Terrorists!

Shelling of rebel-held towns? Terrorists!

Bad falafel? Terrorists!

Someone farted in the elevator? Terrorists!
