I hope this becomes a thing. People just start showing up to big events, rallies, commencements, speeches, dressed as Waldo. I think I could stand politics again if that started happening.

Wally is the original name of the character, it was changed to Waldo for American audiences.

At the Rally to Restore Sanity there were probably about a dozen or so Waldos. I've also seen one at Occupy DC and one guy showed up to my friend's graduation dressed as him (school colors red and white so good blend/hiding).

obviously not a history buff...

Sebastian, who is in the UK as a foreign language assistant at a school in Surrey to teach German and improve his English, said that he was looking forward to a British 'counter-strike' at the next big event in Germany.
'It could become a very humorous competition,' he said.

/or it could lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and the destruction of about a quarter of europe... maybe that's what 'humorous competition' means in German humor.

In France it's Charlie - not nearly as funny as Waldeaux would've been. The original book is English, and the name is Wally. Hetti in Hindi, Weili in Chinese, by the time he reached North America they probably just got bored - he's been farking everywhere Where's Wally

Is that right? I hear the English say "mate" about a friend, as in "me and my mates took the tube through London" but I didn't realize it can also be used to indicate race. Interesting.
