If Democracy is fueled by millions upon millions of out-of-state dollars, then Democracy is certainly still alive, subby.

I see the politics tab is going to consist of rightwingers gloating about winning an election that never would have happened if Walker didn't do a massive over reach.

I am surprised that more hasn't been made of the fact that Walker was not bound by campaign finance laws while Barrett was. Barrett had 4 million, 74% from Wisconsin and Walker had 30.5 million, 2/3rds from out of state. So Walker outspent Barrett 7 ½ to 1.

I think you can safely say that this election was bought.

I think the key difference last night came down to 1. massive levels of out of state funding and 2. outright lies from Walker's people. he straight up lied about the WI budget, lied about the results of his efforts to date and lied about his plans for the future. then just hammered those lies home with all that money he had sitting around.

i'm reading the exit poll breakdown data and it's fascinating reading. money really did make the difference, not the illegal robocalls and voter suppression.

I'm just annoyed at the gloating, personally. I'm coming to hate the situation, regardless of who wins. We're one country, and winning an election doesn't mean the opponents cease to exist. It's not a mandate to do whatever you want and screw over those other people. Team politics has really gotten to the point where a lot of people literally see their political opposition as the enemy and want only to see them suffer.

It can't end well, and there is literally zero call to end this divisiveness and come back to some kind of civility. If the media as a whole had anything even approaching a soul, they would use their ridiculously over the top influence to try and calm the situation. Instead...

try not to take it personally. i'm sure the GOP shills around here will be gloating for at least a week...but that's ok. let 'em gloat and pay attention to the voting data as it comes in, and look for what Walker did right and what mistakes he made. sure, last night was a GOP win...but was it worth it for their long term goals?

So they peg the guy at 5:30 as a "blue-collar" worker. Do they know that for a fact because they know who he is, or did they just assume that?

He got elected the first time the same way, lies and out of state money. I'm praying that the greater US sees that and rebels against this type of "democracy," but I'm not holding my breath.

Of course it was.

Do they have long-term goals?

Seriously, the trend in politics seems to be an analog of the trend in business - maximize short-term benefits with no thought to long-term consequences. Sell off state assets to balance the budget right now, depriving yourself of revenue in the future, and costing yourself many times the value of the asset over the long term as you now have to rent it from the new owner. Defer loan payments to balance the budget this year, costing yourself more in late fees in the future and hamstringing your ability to borrow. Cut taxes now to win re-election, resulting in significant deficits. Term limits only serve to exacerbate this problem, by guaranteeing that politicians will only seek to maximize their short-term benefit, as they are not just unlikely to be in office, but are actually legally barred from being in office to see the results of their own policies.

Too many dumbasses think of it as teams, like a sports team. Hence why we are in this whole mess in the first place. Too many morans vote for a candidate based on the letter after his name (on both sides). If people actually researched it, neither party would be voted in.

The Democrats farked up this campaign. Barrett ran on the "I am not Walker" platform, which is fine and dandy, but actually saying what he would've done differently would've helped just as much, if not more so, than money. His commercials were just crap saying "Walker lost x jobs." instead of saying "I am not a Koch brothers crony, and will do X".

I voted for Barrett, but the loss is no surprise to me.

I see this as a prelim run for later this year. the data is starting to roll in from last night...lets see what numbers we can crunch out of the past couple/few weeks and come up with an analysis for later.

tell you what tho...one thing that seems pretty clear is that if you've got unlimited amounts of money, you can do almost anything you want to voters and they'll put you back in power. campaign spending in this race was amazingly high....and the GOP pumped gobs of cash into WI to keep Walker in power.

The voters have spoken. They don't want labor protections and social safety nets to get in their way when they get their turn to be captains of industry, as they surely will if they are bootstrappy enough.

/we can all be millionaires of we work hard enough, right?

2012-06-06 12:28:46 PM
The "outspent 7-1" argument is a lie. It takes all the independent expenditures on behalf of Walker into account, but none of the ones on behalf of Barrett.

In total, the pro-Walker forces spent about $45 million, including outside groups. The anti-Walker side spent about $24 million, $4 million of which was spent on Falk in the primary. It was a right around 2-1, not 7-1.

And money ultimately didn't matter that much. The exit polls showed most voters decided weeks ago, before the ad wars really heated up.

If you bother to do any digging through objective data, what you'll quickly find is that the Democrats are still trying to spin away their losses - when it was denial of reality that helped dig them into this pit.

He won. The fraudulent phone calls were bad, should be prosecuted, but didn't affect the outcome (and won't ever be tied directly to Walker even if it was his idea in the first place). Walker had a significantly larger amount of money and most of it came from out of state which probably did affect it, but this a post citizens united America so get over it. Democracy died a long, long time ago. Honestly I think we should cut out the middle men and start electing corporations. HALIBURTON 2022!

Buck up and make an actual differnce in November...remember that congress has more power in charge, not the damn president.

This is what the people want so give them what they want. Voters get the government they deserve. I'm not making a judgment statement, here. That's just the simplest way to put it.

Also, am I the only one getting this guy on the right margin? It just so happens that this is what I stereotype a Wisconsin Republican to look like.
