E3 has always sucked.

A friend of mine was sent as a reporter and also it being his first E3. Setting aside the quality, or lack there of, of the announcements from the game devs and manufacturers, he seemed less than impressed with E3 as a convention. From the sounds of it he had a better time at Call of Duty XP.

2012-06-06 08:46:09 AM
Some of the individual games were cool. The voice commands for Splinter Cell: Blacklist are interesting, and you know that it's going to be a riot when you're all playing that in the same room and it's just a contest to see who can screw the player up at the most inopportune times.

Gee... You mean an event in which soulless corporate entities spend hours and hours advertising their products wasn't fun?

I can't imagine that.

2012-06-06 08:52:11 AM
Didn't e3 deliberately kill thier 'fun' aspect a few years ago? Like it used to be a huge event that everyone loved going to for parties and demos and cosplay. Like a super con. Then the industry decided it was getting out of hand and locked everything, made it insider only, etc?

ZeroCorpse: Gee... You mean an event in which soulless corporate entities spend hours and hours advertising their products wasn't fun?

Eh, that's every convention since the invention of the convention. If you have a hobby having a large group of people that share your hobby can be a fun thing.

I have no interest in E3 personally (I casually game, at best), but I would love to go to CES. And that's the mother of all advertisement-fests.

That article was surprisingly cogent and insightful. Mainly because it mirrored my feelings, but still.

Even the coverage on G4 was lackluster.

Last year, they had a lot of floor coverage, with a bunch of interviews and a lot of celebrities.

This year, all I could find was feeds from the big press events.

MightyPez: I have no interest in E3 personally (I casually game, at best), but I would love to go to CES. And that's the mother of all advertisement-fests.

CES is both overwhelming and underwhelming

It's overwhelming because of the sheer size- you are in aircraft hanger sized buildings and yet can't move for being jammed.

But otherwise it's totally underwhelming.

"Oh look, another wall of TV sets, exactly 1mm thinner than last year's"
"Hey, it's the acre of floor devoted to tiny booths hawking cheap Chinese knockoff iPad cases"
"I need to find a bathroom quick- the blur-o-vision 3d displays everywhere are making me motion sick"

After the first day I was giving serious thought to becoming Amish

Sullyville: Do they still allow booth babes or no?

PAX is the one that doesn't allow booth babes. It was made to help feel women feel more comfortable.

E3 this year had bare animated breasts. It was the only part of E3 coverage anyone actually wanted to watch.

Well to be fair the first day with most of the press events the floor wasn't even open yet.

But if it's profitable, that's the ONLY reason a company needs.

If they weren't somehow making money with exclusive content, they'd stop doing it.

Wow...I must be getting old...

This is the first I have heard of E3 this year, of course the number of games I care about this year I could count on one hand.

X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Bioshock Infinite
Borderlands 2

Maybe Dishonored, it has peaked my interest but it hasn't grabbed me yet.

/all the good games come out around my birthday it seems (mid October), Fallout 3 came out on my birthday, and my present was my wife letting me pick it up at midnight and not interrupting for 24 hours

I'm a Nintendo and Xbox owner.

Skipping on just about everything Microsoft showed during their conference.

I'll admit I will probably get a Wii U though Nintendo's conference also sucked.

Need more Borderlands 2, GTAV, and Watch Dogs did look great.

Was there any news about Skyrims DLC? Other than the Double Fine Adventure game that is all I'm interested in.

DLC was a great idea until it generally started to cannibalize game elements that should have been ready on release date instead of at extra cost.

Nothing from what I've seen of this years E3 has beaten my anticipation of Borderlands 2 and Guild Wars 2 (of which this weekend should be another extremely fun filled beta event).

A small random anecdote. I recently played the game Risen 2. At release the game had some good elements, but the combat sucked big floppy donkey dick. Shortly after release the company released the standard "Extra Area to Explore" DLC, nothing special though it added story elements that seemed pertinent to the main plot. I was almost going to write the game company off as another fleecer of the market but... then they release a patch which changed (and fixed) combat completely. The company actually listened to the feedback and fixed the game with a free patch that wasn't a part of DLC.
The game became fun and playable after that.
Listening to the community built around your game is a requisite to making a first class title.

GavinTheAlmighty: The voice commands for Splinter Cell: Blacklist are interesting

Did they make a return to stealth for the new Splinter Cell? The last one was mostly an action game with some stealth elements. Many unlockables, achievements, whatevers related to being discovered as opposed to clearing levels without being seen and with a zero body count. I think every level required you to run and gun at certain points. They even had a dedicated system to quick kill everything on the screen. Not the direction I'd prefer to see Splinter Cell go, but that's probably just me.

Now that the masses have decreed that it's okay to tether SP games to an online server I think I'm done. Why bother with games if the future is just going to be the equivalent of a rental where they shut your game off after a period of time so they can get you to buy the next incarnation. You think there's not much innovation now? How much innovation is there going to be when developers/publishers can just shut a server down, increment a number beside the name of the game, and recharge you for access to the exact same game? Where every game out there is the equivalent of an EA Sports title, except this time they can cut off your access to older versions of the near same game.

Nintendo conference only sucks a bit because a lot of great Wii U stuffs are at Ubisoft conference and a lot of 3DS stuffs will be at another separate conference. There are boring bits of dancing and mini games here and there, but it's not apocalyptic bad.

2012-06-06 09:12:25 AM
Actually, everyone is saying it sucked. Lots of things with no release dates pimped by bad actors and Suits. Anything near future cool was already at PAX East.

No one cares what Nintendo does. The people who buy Nintendo stuff will continue to buy Nintendo stuff. The ones who don't, won't.

No one cares what Sony does. Even if they put out something that looks cool they'll screw it up somehow. Probably intentionally.

No one cares what Microsoft does. And Microsoft doesn't care that you don't care. They'll force you to buy it anyway somehow.

jbtilley: Now that the masses have decreed that it's okay to tether SP games to an online server I think I'm done.

"But you have never owned a game, you only license it!"

Of course, that doesn't stop me from digging into my backlog of games that date back over 20 years and installing/playing about 95% of them with no hassle other then a CD-Key (which I keep track of all my CD-Keys). The other 5% are ones I have bought in the past 3 years which require some sort of one time online certification (usually via Steam).

I heard they modelled the main quest on "Twilight" in an effort to garner more female gamers.

I thought this two, but it isn't the fanfare it used to be and it won't get the attention of the press unless they announce new consoles.
Games I'm still excited for but they were announced like 2 years ago:

Maybe it's because the video game industry has just turned into rehashing of the same shiat year after year with the only improvements being in ways the developers have devised to exploit their customers?

While he made some good points, i love the cries of the PC gamer that thinks they are still relevant.

My main disappointment with this year's announcements is there are very few new concept games. Everything is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel of something already established.

That aside, watch_dogs looks awesome.

2012-06-06 09:24:32 AM
this is the first year i can remember where no console maker stole the show, in fact i'd say all 3 console makers literally made the show worse by even being there...

i don't know if it's indicative of the times we live in (gaming becoming bigger than any single platform) or if abandoning the 5 year cycle is causing a rise in apathy from the console makers (likely)

thecpt: Crap, I don't seem to care that much anymore and I'm not even old. GIVE ME HALF LIFE 3! Or a new total war

I'm 30, I have been playing PC games since the original Sim City on a 5" floppy.

Only recently have I stopped caring about PC games because they seem like too much of a hassle to play. I don't care about multiplayer, I just want a nice interactive story. But I can rarely get that without some DRM nonsense or a forced game update.

*sigh* I guess this is what getting old feels like.

TLG was actually announced in 2009, and it's unlikely it's going to come out on any current hardware :/

Yeah, outside of a few titles, nothign really interested me. the press conferences sucked, and spent way too much time on stuff we didn't care about.

Ms: Seemed to forget that people play the xbox for games, spent most of the time on network stuff and smartglass. Only major games announced are sequels.I get the feeling everything else is being diverted to Durango development.

Sony: Not nearly enough focus on the Vita, with only a few games announced. They needed a major focus on it, and just blew it. Spent 20 minutes talking about a book and network stuff. the new new ip shown, beyond and Last of Us, look really good though. Overall, a real lack of priorities here.

Nintendo: Some nice games here and there, but no showcase titles. The Wii U is seemingly being pushed as a HD DS, rather then the next big thing in consoles. No major surprises ether. No price, availability, or specs for the wii U yet.

I expect a lot of show floor announcements, but honestly, you can tell this is the last year for this generation. I expect future shows will be dominated by ps4/nextbox announcements, and more wii U launch news.

i don't know, ending a new console launch presser with an unneeded second tour through nintendo land with crappy fireworks to a completely silent crowd is pretty awful

not like the WiiU won't have great games or anything, but Nintendo did their best effort to not show them when it counted

2012-06-06 09:30:33 AM
I've been getting to the point lately where I just wait for the Game of the Year edition of big titles, cause it's the only time I feel like I'm buying a complete game. Sure I'm way late to the party but I hate getting shook down for even more money. Currently playing Red Dead Redemption. And if the systems go no physical media like what's being rumored, I'm done. Steam I can handle but not being able to borrow or lend a console game to a friend is asking too much.

Wish Rockstar would make a game that was a sci fi western like Firefly. I think they could pull it off.

Whole article was comedy to me. You guys really take this shiat seriously, huh?
