And this, kiddies, is why I look like I'm in my late 20s while I'm actually in my early 40s. I spent most of my life avoiding the sun, and my skin is awesome.

I know 24-year-olds who look older than I do because they got in the habit of tanning. Sure, they were fashionable when they were around their peers (although I shall never understand why having burnt skin is chic) but it killed their skin, and it will only get worse.

Seriously, kids: Avoid the sun. A tan is not healthy; It's baking your epidermis to a golden brown, just like a trussed-up turkey in an oven.

And yet it does make one wonder what the truck driver would look like if he were black?

Presumably far less sun damage, thats why they have that adaptation.

I'm guessing this was the kind of idiot who was proud of his "trucker's tan". I've known people like that. They think it makes them look like a rugged representative of their career. `Same goes for farmers and road workers.

These guys don't wear sunscreen because it's girly.

CSB time:

When I was a Cop in NM in the 70s, the seasoned cops wouldn't let the rookies drive. So you would spend all day driving around getting a tan on your right arm, or left, depending upon how long you had been a cop. You could always tell the cops and how long they had been cops, bu which forearm was darker. Even the brothers.
I took to riding a motorcycle with a tee shirt on for my days off, just to even my arms out.

End CSB.

CSB:

I like to drive when I go back to the midwest to visit my family (about 9-10 hours depending) because I can take my dog and not deal with the TSA rape brigade. Last summer I took the trip during July and didn't even think about sunscreen, which I normally do for outside activities because I'm a pasty bastard. My left arm and side of the face got absolutely cooked. I knew I was in trouble halfway through my trip but didn't want to make an extra stop. I got some sunscreen at my last stop but the damage was already done. I generally do this to myself once a summer accidentally before I remember to use sunscreen all the time. I can't believe people do this to themselves on purpose.

My father's been trucking since the late 70s and his left arm looks like the arm of an 80-year-old farmer. His right arm is about 10 shades lighter in color and the skin is typical for his age. He wears a hat constantly, so his face is pretty much fine.

My dad, who was a truck driver (here in the U.S.A.) for years, has had small skin cancers appear on his left arm, but none on his right arm. Apparently it's quite common for professional drivers to have more sun damage on the window-facing side of their bodies.

Not sure if you're serious, but in case you are... For a corresponding time of day (2 PM in Chicago vs 2 PM in Melbourne), the sun is on generally the same "side" (east/west) regardless of which hemisphere you inhabit. However, compared to driving in the US, the driver would be on the opposite side when he's down under, so the opposite side of his body would be exposed to the sun. Seasons are reversed between the northern and southern hemispheres, but the Earth does in fact revolve in the same direction on both halves of the planet.

How ironic. Just yesterday I was in a meeting of all my fleet managers, and this issue was raised. We have 4 drivers out of about 850 who have skin cancer on their left side - arm or face. One of my Fleet Managers who used to drive says that he had surgery for skin cancer on the left side of his nose a few years ago. We're looking at a product that applies to the window to filter UV rays but is clear so it doesn't break the no tinting rules.

/yes, it may not be irony. But it's certainly a coincidence

Only partly - the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west in the southern hemisphere. But it will be in the north of the sky in winter compared to the south up your end.

But considering the steering wheel is on the right hand side of the truck down here you are right about driving south in the morning and north in the afternoon. If you want to avoid trucker's tan that is.

Aw look, it's a very stupid person who thinks melanoma is an old person disease. 50% of melanoma occur under the age of 60. If you can't control your bowels or eat solid food at 60 you've probably got bigger issues, though.

Melanoma is horrible. Even if it's curable (which it often isn't by the time it's caught) it leaves awful scars (or stumps), and has a high risk of recurrence.

But by all means, feel like it's too much trouble to follow some simple rules: Slip Slop Slap Wrap
