There was a popular game out back then called "Birth of the Federation" and I think that was what they were trying to emulate. I liked how they tried to fill in the back story for shows that took place in their future (the first meeting of the Klingons that went bad, all the Archer planets mentioned in the other series, why the Klingons looked different in TOS). Like all the newer Treks, it found its way in the 3rd and 4th seasons but by then it was too late.

They don't. The new Trek does have it's detractors among the really die hard TOS fans. I know a Star Wars fan who loved the originals, but totally hated ever sequel afterwards.
