Rapmaster2000: Wu said it isn't fair to judge Chinese air by American standards because China is a developing country and noted that U.S. environmental guidelines have become more stringent over time.

The standard China uses "takes into account the level of our current stage of development," Wu said.

That's... creative.

We need to write that one down and trot it out again.

Obama said it isn't fair to judge American military strikes by Chinese standards because America is a military superpower. The standard American uses "takes into account the overwhelming military superiority we currently hold relative to China," Obama said.

Yeah, dicks! And while you're at it, stop telling people there's unsafe levels of lead in our toys, melamine in our consumables, and god-knows-what in our brittle stainless steel. We don't run sweatshops and we don't pay our labor force the equivalent of $0.25 US per day. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go execute a dissident or 300.

Not surprising.

I live in one of the "Five Furnaces of China" where the humidity and heat get insanely high in the Summer months. According to Chinese labor laws, if the temperature exceeds 40c* then outdoor laborers (construction workers, city workers, etc) can't work outside. But rather than send the workers home, the official temperature almost never exceeds 40c in my city. I've even taken temperature readings in the shade that have reached 45c and workers were still building the new subway system.

Rule of thumb: If it makes the Chinese government look bad and they can't blame it on anything external, they just lie.

*-I'm pretty sure it's 40c, can't remember off the top of my head

I lived in China for eight years. That's their standard excuse for everything. Everyone spits on the sidewalks "Don't judge us, we're a developing nation!" everyone litters and throws their garbadge everywhere, "oh, we're a developing nation, don't judge us!" They execute people for non violent crimes "Oh, we're just a developing nation, don't judge us!"

For a nation that brags about their 5000 years of history, they should have flying cars, perfect government, and be showing the world what it is to be truely developed. F-em, F-em right in their "developing" throats.

Are not these the same arrogant assholes who keep telling us they have 4,000+ years of civilization?

Kinda like my teenager who wants the responsibilities of a child but the privileges of an adult.

Nayest: Why does the Chinese government do this?

They kind of see truth as a commodity to control.

Dudes, you can't see from one side of the square that never had anything bad happen in it ever to the other on most days.

Here in Smog Lake City, on the worst of days you can't see the mountains on the other side of the lake.
I spent several week in Jinan before I found out there even WERE mountains.

Technically, they are reporting air quality on their own soil, not the air quality in China.
