2003-11-09 12:32:25 AM

2003-11-09 12:44:51 AM
So it's basically a very sawed off shotgun with slug cartridges?

2003-11-09 12:45:38 AM
Wow. Truly an american phallic symbol. Shoot me now.

2003-11-09 12:53:26 AM
jerkworthy, You're buying two of them so you can shoot yourself in both feet? Because I think you might wanna put two hands on one of these motherfarkers.

2003-11-09 12:54:43 AM
It's for shooting really big deer, I imagine.

2003-11-09 12:56:39 AM
This beast handles quite well actually.

This is the gun you pull on a kodiak bear after throwing it through a plate glass window, all the while neglecting to recite the Miranda.

Meanwhile, off topic...This gun reminds of me the one Charles Bronson had in "Death Wish 3". I wish I could remember the name he had for it.

2003-11-09 01:06:27 AM
KdiggityW - the name was 'Wildey'.

2003-11-09 01:06:43 AM
sweet gun. Prefer Ruger's custom Super Redhawk to the smith in design, but still sweet.

2003-11-09 01:10:18 AM
What's the big fark? Colt has been making the 50 caliber Desert Eagle for years. Rounds used to sell for $5 each, though. Very pricey toy, but will definitely turn some heads at the firing range

2003-11-09 01:20:01 AM
These things have been out for several several months now, it's not big news anymore.

2003-11-09 01:20:07 AM
Is this the same as a .5 Magnum?

Oh.. two zeros look better? My bad.

What's the big fark? Colt has been making the 50 caliber Desert Eagle for years.

The big fark is that the .50AE in the Desert Eagle (imported from Isarael by Magnum Research, not made by Colt - dumbass) fires a 325 grain bullet (7000 grains per pound, by the way) at 1400 fps (feet per second.)

The new .500 S&W fires a 440 gr bullet at 1625 fps.

That works out to 1414 ft/lb of energy for the .50AE and 2581 ft/lb for the .500 S&W. That's like adding a .44 mag on top of the .50AE.

*information per the 2004 Gun Digest

They got the idea from the Joker.

I wonder if Alucard will switch.

I'd still prefer this:

"(7000 grains per pound, by the way)"

Yes, but how many cubic inches to one liquid ounce?

Gun control/second amendment bashing by obligatory liberal pansy in 5....4....3....

2003-11-09 02:09:55 AM
Rock on. I'll be sure to pick one on layaway next payday.

2003-11-09 02:11:28 AM
I like guns. As machines and as art. but wtf do you need a half inch bullet for? They mount guns on top of jeeps that fire .50 cal, fergawdsake!

obligatory liberal pansy

2003-11-09 02:12:10 AM
All the power of a .50-cal. round without the annoying precision of a rifle? It's the firearms equivalent of an Escalade.

rolls eyes

If you're shooting at something that requires such a large round, it might be a good idea to get a little more distance between yourself and the target, eh?

2003-11-09 02:13:03 AM
Fap Fap Fap Fap.

Oh, I'm sorry....you get your thrills your way, I'll get mine in my way.

Resuming fapping in 3...2...1

long range marksmanship is a beutiful thing...some of those people, tho...did anyone catch the "red mist" link on memepool.com awhile back? I never had a clue there was so much involved in killing prarie dogs. "custom built barrel?" still, hitting anything at 300 yards is a site to behold.

now don't you look smart, princess?

All the power of a .50-cal. round without the annoying precision of a rifle?

Nope, not the power of a .50 BMG as you have pictured - that's a 750 gr bullet at 2700 fps.

More like the power of a heavily loaded .45-70. Or if you look at muzzle energy only (and ignore similar bullet weight/diameter) the power of a .308, more or less.

But in a package that you can carry on your belt.

Similar bullet diameter does not necessarily equal similar ballistic performance - or do you think that a .22LR is the same as a .22-250?

2003-11-09 02:28:17 AM
I knew about this months ago, and I'm not even a gun person.

2003-11-09 02:32:34 AM
Yeah, I heard about this too, when it was posted on fark the first time, months ago....

swallows "liberal pansy" bait

2003-11-09 02:42:02 AM
FlakMonkey: Not *all* the power of a .50 BMG round, but a great deal of power nonetheless, 3 times the power of a .44 Magnum and more than twice the power of a .50 AE.

This thing is for times when you can't afford to have a 5 foot rifle in your hands but you need to be able to kill something big and angry very quickly, or for people who want to hunt big friggin' animals with a handgun. S&W have said that a 500 grain round for this handgun should be able to take out any game animal on Earth, and that's believable.

It isn't the first handgun to use a .50 caliber round, but it is a completely new .50 caliber round so it's very different from the Magnum Research BFR. Sounds like a collector's piece for those who aren't hunters, it'd be nice to say "I own the most powerful handgun in the world."

2003-11-09 02:45:21 AM
"It's the firearms equivalent of an Escalade."

Exactly. But *sniff*, it's so beautiful.

I'd get one, fire it a few, then put it my wall. Not practical, but practical is boring.

50 BMGs aren't all that practical either.

2003-11-09 02:46:18 AM
Bennyhaha - I'm buying one for a girl for rape protection, and one for me for the sake of loud noises.

My 629 Classic is not much smaller than this beast. However I can conceal it and carry just about anyplace. I can also shoot rabbits on the run with it. It weighs a lot less and I am confident I could kill a kodiak grizzly if I had to. As for all you out there who say that I dont have enough power with the .44 compared to the 500, I don't need a jet engine in my volvo. It may be one hell of a ride but its too much and too expensive to operate.

O.K. that said I want one bad.

2003-11-09 02:47:22 AM
Hmmmm... I guess MR has either discontinued the .50AE BFR or it was a limited run to begin with. Ah well, the current crop of BFRs are perfectly capable of breaking both your wrists anyways.

Breaking both your wrists? Someone has little grasp on physics and biomechanics.

2003-11-09 03:10:42 AM
Holy fark. Holy holy fark. The slugs on this thing are big enough to drop God. If you got shot in the arm by this thing it might rip it clean off.

Holy fark.

"My 629 Classic is not much smaller than this beast."
You need to hold these two side by side... There is a big difference.

I want one of these .500's with a 3 inch barrel and smaller grip.

2003-11-09 03:16:04 AM
sweet. now i can take up hunting Peterbilts.

Mad Ogre - cool website

2003-11-09 03:28:33 AM
Very useful if you find yourself in close quarter combat with a rhino.

Or you just wanna shoot the bejeesus outta some terrorist beer cans (kegs?)

2003-11-09 03:29:54 AM
Damn it, just get a howitzer and be done with it.

2003-11-09 03:31:56 AM

I'm old school, dammit.

2003-11-09 03:33:36 AM
KdiggityW -- Bronson used a .357 i believe

2003-11-09 03:57:23 AM
Crossbow all the way, baby.
