If I learned anything from cartoons, it's that when bears develop a taste for picnic baskets, hi-jinx will ensue. Bears with a taste for humans would probably be much less amusing.

Bullshiat. A bear was being a bear and some humans got scared. I don't care what the corpse used to be, there was no reason to kill the bear.

Read the article again!
FTA:
Wagner pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 1994. He and two others were charged with a killing a man who they believed had sexually assaulted a family member. He served his prison time and was released.

In other word, there were no proofs. Just plain old fashion vigilante!

And then the Canadian conservation officers killed the bear. I'm waiting for a Moose to kill the Canadian conservation officers next.

This is either the circle of life at its finest, or a seriously weird epic cycle.

When will the madness end?

I'm always fascinated by the argument that once a bear tastes human flesh, it has to be killed.

Let's see.

A bear is the top predator in his forest.

A human being walks into the bear's forest.

The bear, thinking he is still the top predator, decides to have a nice human lunch.

The bear has now tasted human flesh.

The bear must now be killed.

A hungry bear is going to eat human flesh whether he has tasted it before or not. Anyone who thinks consuming humans is something that a hungry bear isn't naturally predisposed to has to be crazy.

I tend to think what is going on here is ranchers, farmers and people who make their living on the tourist trade don't want bears eating humans to become a skill and a preference that is passed on through a mothers to their cubs. What is scaring people is the idea that generations of bears decide, rather than spending all day rooting in berry bushes or getting cold and wet swatting salmon, let's just go eat that family of campers over there. That humans become the preferred meal for a bear population rather than the occasional tender morsel.

Humans run things here. Any animal thinks it can challenge our "top slot" does so at its peril. We will only tolerate an animal that knows its place.

A shark kills a human, we hunt the shark. It does not matter whether or not the human has any business in the ocean or if the shark harbored any ill will towards humanity. It kills a human, it has to die.

Who says? Is human meat just so damn tasty that if a bear dines even once on a corpse, it will develop an insatiable appetite for human flesh?

That seems far fetched. The bear scavenged a corpse. Moreover it was a black bear. They aren't known for being aggressive towards humans. Attacks are incredibly rare. Killing it was stupid.

I was under the impression the bear had to be killed because it reached inside the guy's car and pulled him out. I think they're trying to avoid having that happen to someone who happens to still be alive. He didn't just walk up to the bear and punch him no the nose, the bear went to eat him.

Bears are not top predators.

Bears normally avoid humans.

Bears are scavengers (which is why most big game 'hunters' with a bear mounted and stuffed as a trophy were only capable of killing it because they baited the bear with some rotting fish guts in a barrel, under the tree blind they were hiding in) that eat carrion, berries and occasionally kill live prey if an easy opportunity presents itself.

Humans, being over fed and pampered and lazy, are not well adapted to running the hell away, so once a bear realizes that we are easy prey, it WILL hunt us preferentially.

It has absolutely nothing to do with tourists or farmers or ranchers. (Well, other than the fact that 'tourists' tend to include the retards that walk up to panda bear, lion or gorilla cages and get arms and scalps ripped off - and then complain that it was the zoo's fault.)

2012-06-05 04:25:15 PM
....... forgot to add that, yes, black bears will attack humans as a food source when they are desperate. But that is not the norm. Polar bears and grizzlies might be a different story altogether, I don't know.

If I were wrong about black bears, then I would not be alive today.

It's not like one bite will turn black bears into evil mutant zombie killers with big pointy teeth.

As you said, black bears normally avoid humans since they aren't sure how much of a threat we might be (in other words, they don't know how much resistance we would put up when attacked), so they normally only attack when they are desperate for food. The problem is that humans are pathetically useless at surviving a bear (or other predator) attack (NOT just city dwellers, but all humans) so once a bear kills and/or eats a human, it will quickly realize what an easy and plentifull food source we are. Look at your fingers; do they end in long, sharp, strong claws or do they end in wimpy fingernails that tend to bend backwards when encountering anything more challenging than a loose penny or pencil? How about fangs, do we have anything we could bite an attacking bears neck with to suffocate it? No. If I remember correctly, bears can run as fast as race horses - humans can not. This is why humans around the world try to kill the predator that ate a human, whether it is a lion, leopard, shark. bear, wolf, python or whatever.

Our main survival skills are intelligence, group communication and tool making. It would be nice if we could move the problem bear to a far more remote area, but that isn't often an option.
