I used to use the Zune music tool, it sucks.

All I really want is something to play mp3's without asking us to buy something else or showing pictures of the band and displaying music trivia.

Shouldnt that be "The Zune is dead. Long live the Zune"?

No Zune is some what in WP, WP8, Xbox 360, Kinect, W8, and future product that uses Metro.

For fun I used to walk into Apple Stores and ask the geniuses how i could directly transfer the songs on my Zune to my iPod. So much enjoyment in watching the steam come out of their ears.

Zune lives in death!

I've still got a perfectly good zune 120 that does everything I need. I'm not too worried that the software will keep me from using it.

//yes, I still love my zune.

You're not the only one. I have two 80s. Once in a while I see another one out in the wild, always a conversation starter.

I had a zune, but the only thing I kept was the Zune pass. Damn good deal, that. I am grandfathered in so I for $15 a month I get all the music I want to download, plus 10 songs to keep (usually in MP3 format). My wife never buys music for her iPhone now; I always use some of those for her.

So I say: "The zune is dead. Long live the zune pass"

I've had a 120 GB Zune for about 3 years now and it's great. I use the software for nothing but transferring files to the player so I've never had to deal with it being too invasive, trying to get me to buy stuff, etc. It sucks PMPs are being phased out by smartphones.

2012-06-05 01:09:40 PM
I lost my 30GB Zune last year and have yet to get anything else. I loved that thing for six good years, I deserve to mourn for at least a little while.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Shouldnt that be "The Zune is dead. Long live the Zune"?

No. The phrase comes from the tradition that power and title transferred as soon as the king died, so the implication of the phrase is, "The (old) king is dead, long live the (new) king." Ergo, the headline should be, "The Zune is dead, long live the XBox Music App."

/or, you know
//something like that

I have had a Zune 120 for several years now. Works great with a large screen and I loved it, and I like the Zune software for the computer. This is a sad day

2012-06-05 01:48:40 PM
I still use my Zune every day, I hope I never have to buy another PMP, I don't think I'll be able to find another one on eBay.

The Zune was stillborn, like some tragic mutant. Why did it take so long to finish the autopsy?

I use Zune through my Windows Phone. Fantastic music app. So fluid and intuitive. And no I'm not being sarcastic. The zune software on my phone is awesome.

The desktop zune software however? Well that I wish I could shove a rusty rail spike through it. And then father children with its wife. Deleting songs at random, not recognizing certain types of music/video, even though the website says it supports it. Adding songs, seeing it be added, then not being able to find it anywhere. Blah.

But once you finally get the songs ON your phone? Brilliance takes place.

Like a cancer patient that's been on "the watch" for like 5 years..It was zune's time.

//RIP that old, reliable 30 gig workhorse.

Once Google Music came out, I sold my iPod. I only need a small playlist on my phone's hard drive for subway rides.

Maybe not "brilliance", in my opinion, but the phone software is quite serviceable. The desktop software is terrible.

You must use Foola because you sure as hell aren't using iTunes. Zune's shiat-festival music software is ambrosia compared to iTunes.

/Why the f*ck do I need a Live account to download free podcasts?
//Why does the MS service suck so much at finding album art?
///Why is a 10 year old ripper (Audiograbber) better than the Zune software at ripping CDs?
////At least changing out the battery was cheap and fairly easy.
//First gen 30gb. Used it this past weekend during my 600 mile road trip. Still works fine.

I have a 30 that has just filled up. I loved it - I had my CD collection ripped to my computer before I had an mp3 player, and I didn't have to convert them all to the iPod format. I'm hoping this means I can find a Zune 120 cheap on ebay.

ZuneHD was magnificent. My 13 year old son has one and everyone in his class wants one. Same with my Windows Phone. Everyone that sees it and uses it loves it.

What sucks is Microsoft's marketing team.

Squirting? Seriously? That said the feature was really quite fun. I used to send anonymous tunes to people in airports and on my commute. I had a number of extremely cool musical conversations over the years with that feature.

I remember years ago having a roommate who really hated Apple stuff.

I remember him coming in one day and showing off his new Dell DJ, proclaiming that "these are going to replace iPods pretty soon."

I think Dell discontinued them a few months later.

I always have a good laugh when I recall that. He really believed it too.

Dell also drove the price of "Pocket PC's" way down. They are kind of important in the evolution of the "smart phone."

Someone once had a little story about Steve Jobs introducing the new iPod like a unicorn that came out on stage and pooped rainbows or something, and then Bill Gates introduced the new Zune like it was a rotting, hell-fire zombie horse that pooped lizards, death, and black holes or something like that. Granted my Google-fu is weak but if someone had that little story to post it would be a fitting end for the Zune and I'd be eternally grateful.

Hahaha. A roomie of mine worked for Dell, he brought home a DJ Ditty for me to check out. It wasn't a bad little player, but whoever did the design for the user interface and the physical controls on the thing should have been taken out back and shot.

Web services like that are notorious for being rebranded, though. Just look at Apple's .Mac MobileMe iCloud. Hell even Google just changed the name of their online store to something kind of counterintuitve (why would you name a store that most people use for downloading apps "Play"?).

Assuming you bought it on the day it was released (Nov 14, 2006) and lost it Dec 31, 2011, enjoying it for 6 years is quite remarkable.

Protip: human beings occasionally round upwards in their recollection of time.

Please adjust your software accordingly.

i've been running a ZuneHD forever and I love it. The zune music service is fantastic and worth every penny.
That said, the software running the music service on the Windows 8 consumer preview is just an embedded version of the Zune software under a different name. All the regular devices work, as far as the software's concerned, it more or less thinks it's a Windows phone. I was able to log in to it with my Zune log in credentials and stream/download whatever I felt like when i tried it. Everything was flawless. If that's how this changeover goes, I'll be perfectly fine with that because really, nothing at all changes for me but the name of the program I open.

I got a zune 4 years ago to replace one of the many ipods that crapped out on me. Still working great. I'm surprised that battery still works. I was dating a girl about a year after i got it and she was freaked out about it not being an ipod. After a couple road trips she ended up liking the zune (and hated itunes) enough to buy herself one. You know how Apple used to have that slogan "it just works"? That's how it was with the zune for me.

If the transition over to xbox music is as simple as they make it seem then I won't mind. It'd be interesting if they had an audio player widget for windows 7 to try out.
