Washington trades Vokoun's rights to Pittsburgh for a 7th rounder, and the Pens sign him for $2M a year for 2 years. I guess to act as insurance for Fleury.

Who'd have thought Vokoun would be where he is now? It's been a rough year for him. What should have been an off-season last year with him making bank turned into accepting a 1-year discount contract, then having one of his worst seasons ever, only to sign as a back-up in Pittsburgh for slightly more than the going rate for that role.

As for Thomas, I fully expect the Bruins to trade him to a team that needs that cap hit. Conditional pick, 7th rounder, something like that, for the rights to Thomas, who is suspended for not reporting, salary comes off the books but the cap hit remains. Hell, Boston might even be able to coax a 5th-6th rounder out of someone if there's competition.

There are a lot more Devs fans than there were in 1995 when that talking point debuted.

Lots of kids around here grew up watching only one metro area team win cups. I see people in Devils attire on the train from the city going out to jersey to watch the games.

You're not going to win many debates talking about fan support with the Devils as your example. It's not a "talking point". It is a fact. 24, 25, 20, 23. That's where New Jersey has ranked in average attendance over the last 4 seasons. And that's with a new arena in there. For a team that has been so good for so long, they have notoriously awful attendance and one of the smallest fan bases in the league.

I'm not saying that because I hate the Devils - I was cheering for them 3 decades ago in Denver (although I am pretty tired of their success) - it's just that insulting a team's fan numbers when your own is infamously tiny is just tacky. And wrong.

2012-06-04 02:14:38 PM
I remember a Devils failed talking point about attendance before new arena: "It's hard to get to an arena that's right off a major highway! You'll see when we get our new arena! You'll see!'

I also remember that the fan base had the same kind of issue with the Prudential Center being built in a bad area that could be difficult to get to. Where have I heard that before?

OH RIGHT WHEN THE COYOTES BUILT IN GLENDALE.

Interestingly enough, the Coyotes former owner shares a lot of personality traits with Jeff Vanderbeek, in that they are TREMENDOUS scumbags.

Killer Cars: Does Not Matter: So, why not trade Thomas to a team that is struggling financially, and that way the struggling team is $5 million closer to reaching the CBA cap floor without having to spend the money?

I don't how strict the league is with some blatant contract moves, so it wouldn't surprise if the Bruins would be forced to take a bad contract in return, and/or maybe Thomas would have to resign with whomever teams takes him.

I don't think it will be a problem, I don't see an NHL season next year.. and if there is it will be a very short one.

But I didn't insult the King's fan base. I just pointed out that the sparsely attended Brendan Byrne / Continental Airlines Arena that I used to go to was full of kids who grew up to be fans who bring their kids etc. There are a lot more Devils fans here than there used to be. Of course, had they put the new rink in Hoboken instead of Newark there would be even more.

As for their success, they've done well but they're not Detroit.

Good for the Kings, if they win. My life won't change much. Soon we'll see the who's who list in hollywood sporting Kings gear and spouting life-long-fan anecdotes they just pulled off of wiki. So, for that reason alone I want NJ to win the next four.

He has a tea party to attend.

If I ever meet Tim Thomas, I will gladly shake his hand and thank him for winning a Cup. Then call him a tea-tard and kick him in the nuts.

Just trade his ass and be done with it. Thanks for helping win the Cup and all, but it's obvious he doesn't want to play in Boston anymore. Give him the heave ho.

I'm not hatin on Kings or their fans, I'm sure they have some die-hards. Just that I'm not sold there is much of a following for a team that plays in the 2nd biggest city in the US. Would love to see LA go hockey-nuts but I dont see it happening. Anyway, I dont expect my boys to win this, LA has been a bit better than the Devs and have taken them out of their forecheck. I just dont get the feeling the Devils really know what to do about it, they're trying to stick to their game plan but it's not working like it has. I think this will be Kings in 4 or 5 max.

I had a bad dream yesterday. I was watching tonight's game three. Brodeur started looking his age, let in two sloppy goals in the first, and then the defense collapsed, and they lost 5-3. I have predicted things in my dreams before. Only bad things. Hoping that sharing it so much makes it a reverse jinx... or inverted jinx... or contrapositive jinx, oh I don't know already.

What's even funnier is that Thomas says he wants to play for Team USA in Sochi in 2014. If you were the GM for Team USA, would you take a chance on a 40-year-old guy who's been out of action for a year, or someone like Jimmy Howard (who played pretty well at the IIHF this year) or Jonathan Quick (took an 8 seed to the SCF, and will be only 28 in 2014)?

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if Thomas even makes the team, assuming he even comes back from the year off we're assuming he's taking. If Quick isn't the #1 guy in Sochi (barring injury, Steve Mason-ism), USA Hockey is either crazy, or the Gold medal favourite, since they have a guy better than Quick is right now (Miller, Schneider, Howard..?)

Ugh, much as I love hockey (& I do), it's time for LA to knock out a couple quick wins & get this season over with. It is just too farking hot outside for the hockey season to still be going on.

/there needs to be an 'official' lake in Ontario somewhere that when the ice goes out in the spring the season is over that day (that would make for interesting playoff races...) & the playoffs start three days later - regardless the season must be done with by May 10th (ish).
