PanicMan: tlchwi02: Flash_NYC: I'd want to do street racing, (project gotham2), and while I'm racing, some 12 year old, who thinks the headset is for his own personal radio broadcast is constantly talking, whooping, moaning, howling and cursing or telling lame jokes.

see, this i don't get... why not just hit the mute button? it takes all of 5 seconds. most of the games allow you to auto mute from the outset and even if they don't you can just plug your headset in, click the mute button on your end, and its defacto muted everyone and they still think you're plugged in.

i don't get the "i stopped playing a 60 dollar game i enjoyed because clicking "mute" was a bridge too far" stuff

She's playing a team game, where communication is important. Note that the issue is people ON HER OWN TEAM doing this. And yes women get harassed differently than men.

You've never played random pickup internet games ever, have you? I know you imagine it to be all "Watch your right flank." and "Smoke grenade the room on 3...2...1..." But really it's all nonsense and smack talk. I know you imagine the only way to communicate online is with your own voice. But really lots of games have built in sayings so you can push a button and everyone on your team hears "Grenade!" It has been this way since the beginning of time.

"I'm a GIRL GAMER. Just don't treat me like a GIRL, even though I'm a GIRL. I just wish you boys would accept that GIRLS play video games too! I'm cool with my male friends because I'm a GIRL GAMER. A GAMER GRRRL. WHY MUST YOU SINGLE ME OUT BECAUSE I'M A GIRL? Can't you just ignore that I'M A GIRL GAMER? Stop persecuting me because I'm a GIRL!!!"

Here's an idea: Stop talking about your gender and push the damned buttons.

Some people are assholes. They'll be assholes if you're a guy. They'll be assholes if you're a girl. You can either ignore them, or leave them to hang around with other assholes, but complaining every opportunity you get isn't going to change them.

And another thing: Stop referring to yourself as a "gamer", because that's just stupid. EVERYONE PLAYS VIDEO GAMES NOW. My mother's almost 80, and she plays video games. My 48-year-old sister plays video games. My sickly old aunt played video games. By definition, anyone who plays video games is a "gamer", so it's really not this grand designation these days-- Not any more than someone who drives a car being referred to as "the driver" or someone who drinks being called "a drinker", or someone who is shopping being referred to as "a shopper".

You're a girl. You play video games. Congratulations. You're doing something that people of both genders have been doing since Pac-Man hit arcades in 1980. You're not special. You're not unique. You're a person doing a thing that lots and lots of other people do, and have been doing for over 30 years.

Honestly, get over yourself. Both guys and girls. Being a "gamer" is nothing special. You play video games? Whoopideedoo! So does your boss, your cousin, your mom and billions of other people.

Perhaps what bothers people is that you feel the need to announce that you're a gamer at all.

Shut up. Press buttons. Play the game.

My wife runs into this problem when she's destroying people in modern warfare 3. She says something in VOIP, immediately gets called a little boy who needs to have 'his' balls drop, she points out that she's a chick, and then its 10 minutes of crude misogynistic insults, the furor of which increases the more she scores on these guys. I play with her more to listen to rage sweating trolls these days and less to play because its far funnier to listen to some 13 year old nerdgasm his impotent anger over VOIP than to just win the game.

The best part is when they all race to friend her over steam...

Kome: One is that the culture of online gaming does that MORE towards female gamers, both in terms of quantity of offensive remarks and quality of them.

I don't know what games you've been playing, but trash talking is just background noise. You do something to stand out, you get harassed. You're winning? Harassed. You're losing? Harassed. You're young? Old? Voice sounds funny? etc etc. People want to talk trash so they'll latch on to some aspect of you and go to town.

Being a woman doesn't make you more or less of a target. It just gives them something to make fun of.

Two is that this is not an element I would like associated with any subculture I am a part of.

I don't think any of us really do. I might be tempted to play on more pub servers if the trash talk was corralled.

2012-06-04 11:49:43 AM
In all fairness, I get more or less the same from XBL shooters with a different type of genitalia substituted in. Down to the "I hope you're raped to death" comments. So it's not so much gender-based harassment as just, well, harassment.

Also worth noting that the woman in the article is a troll, not a random bystander getting insulted. She runs a website that specifically solicits insults and iirc posts her tag there, and logs in to games specifically to provoke insults. I mean, as noted above, that's not exactly hard but c'mon, this is like claiming that message boards are vitriolic and anti-religious and supporting that by interviewing Bevets and sampling responses to his posts.

2012-06-04 11:52:06 AM

Kome: TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: I get it, some female gamers don't want to deal with it. Guess what, some of us male gamers don't want to either, so we don't. We mute them, or play single player, or only play with known friends.

Or, I guess, we write about it on the BBC?

What's wrong with trying to change the larger culture instead of just trying to eek out a safe little corner of it for yourself?

Because you are ultimately attempting to change the culture of 13 year old boys, which is not really a culture so much as it is "puberty".

Go ahead, I'm not telling you to stop whatever you want to try, but I'm also telling you that, in the end, you're going to be frustrated and angry that "these gamers just don't get it" for 2 reasons:

1) They're 13 year olds (or mentally so), as I mentioned before,

and

2) There's an infinite supply turning over every year that doesn't care about what you said the year before; you'll bang your head against the wall for years not understanding why nothing is changing, without realizing that the population is aging into and out of the hobby on a regular basis and the "gamers" are different people year after year.

You can not-be-a-dick, stand out as an example, and that's cool, but never make the mistake of thinking that you're gonna "change the culture".

Yes, it does. I do my best to NEVER identify myself as female except to people I already know and trust, because it absolutely changes the tenor of reactions.

Women get harassed differently and more frequently.

What a shock. Immature teenage boys are dicks when they can be anonymous.

They will also do it if you sound gay, black, Mexican, Jewish, young, old, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Canadian, French Canadian...

In other words, they're dicks. They'll continue to be dicks. This is not a "girl gamer" problem; This is a "some unsupervised young men are going to be assholes all their lives" problem.

2012-06-04 11:56:05 AM

Hivejive: Why are they talking about gamers here when tfa article is about people who use xboxes?

Makes me fondly recall my days playing zombie panic source. The servers I played on were probably 25% female at any given time (out of ~20 people), nobody gave it a second thought. It's amazing what kind of difference there is with an average player age of 25 instead of 15. Just another reason I prefer gaming on a PC. That, and DayZ. So much fun. Haven't seen any female avatars in that game yet (since they just enabled that), so it remains to be seen how females fare in Chernarus.

If you get very good or very bad at a given game that'll get you harassed a lot more than gender. In the case of everybody being of a pretty generic skill level, though, yeah, the nail that sticks up is the one that gets hammered down. Mention having red hair and you'll be barraged with 'ginger' comments, mention liking model trains and you'll be attacked for being a nerd, mention you voted for palin and you'll be mocked for having an extra chromosome.

Your problem isn't identifying yourself as female, it's that you're identifying yourself.

I think women of decades past would roll their eyes and laugh at the petty bullshiat that is considered 'abuse' and 'harassment' today. Anonymous strangers you will never meet, talking from unknown locations, spouting stupidity that you can easily mute or delete is not that emotionally difficult to overcome. A woman would come off much stronger if such pettiness simply had zero effect on her than if she made a big deal about it.

And really, complaining about these worthless clowns that talk nasty in-game is like complaining about a bird shiatting on your car. Of course it is disgusting. It just dropped feces on your property. But the truth is, it just isn't smart enough to know any better and it really didn't harm you in any way, so there is no point in getting upset.

Or they have victim complexes fueled by the many examples of double standards in our culture that favor the female gender.

I play online with my wife and we don't seem to have this problem much, usually because we're smarter than the trolls and can make them look very stupid in short order as Strategeryz0r mentioned. I have yet to meet a troll who wasn't stupid enough to be burned by a couple of sarcastic comments and a headshot.

We play with another couple who don't experience problems either. If someone is really annoying us, by being loud or not letting us get a word in edgewise, we mute them. It's really that simple, if you don't like it then don't listen to it.

yes, that would be lovely, but its never going to happen. you know what can happen? the bloody mute button! I can control my behavior. i can't control other people's behavior. Of all of the situations in the world where i have to deal with jerks, xbox is probably the BEST. I can't mute a guy being a jerk to me at work and ignore them forever. I can't mute the guy who cut me off on the highway and never deal with him again, or some drunk belligerent at a sports bar. if someone is a jerk on xbox, i can block them instantly and permanently

The first thing you should be doing when playing an online game is muting the shiat out of everyone. No contact at all except those you designate your friends. That's the minimum prerequisite for any online game I play. Leaving public channels is so automatic now I barely even notice myself doing it. I came here to play the game, so STFU and play goddamnit

why do i care to improve it? thanks to technology it does not effect me if every person on there is a total jerk or a band of nuns. Teams that communicate dominate the ladders and leagues and whatnot. Teams that communicate don't exist on public servers.

A girl getting upset about being harassed on a public server is close to the stupidest thing I've ever read a complaint about. Guys get harassed all the time, she can use the mute button, she can never speak so no one will know she is a girl, she can create/join a private server or she can create/join a team where the other players aren't retarded. There are even some all girl teams as well as some adult only teams for adults who are sick of being around teens acting like teens.

Alternatively, we can keep crossing our fingers and stomping our feet really hard hoping random internet people will stop being assholes. Better stomp really hard.

There are a lot of butthurt guys in here whining about how those mean ol' women get angry when they're called sexist terms. Hey guys, don't want to get called out for being a dick? Don't be a dick. It's not difficult. Just pretend the people you're gaming with are in the same room as you. Would you REALLY tell the woman sitting 2 feet from you to get back in the kitchen and/or suck your dick and/or she's gonna get raped? How about if her husband was sitting next to her?

sammyk: I do not understand why gamer girls would let the xbox live trolls get to them. Most of the girls I've seen online actually play pretty good. So for starters they are beating the dickheads at their own hobby that they spend every waking moment they are not jerking off doing. Secondly the words off these miscreants only prove the only bare tit they have ever seen and are likely to see for a very long time belong to their mom or sister. So they beat them at their own game and have cheap and easy shot at the little knuckle draggers oh so fragile sexuality. As usual in real life the girls really do have all the power.

I for one mute just about every one of the racist, misogynistic little jerk offs and mute them faster than I ignore fark trolls. Seriously people STOP letting your children play adult games!!! I've heard kids that honestly sound like they are 5-8 years old on COD and Battlefield. WTF are you thinking?

i know what i'm thinking: 'who knew 6 year old kids could talk like that?'

W/L ratio >>>>>> K/D ratio

You could get a thousand kills a game, but if you lose the game you still suck. Kills mean nothing in the face of victory or defeat. Whether it's a pub or an organized competition. Frankly that's one of the most refreshing things about, and good god do I feel like a shill, Max Payne's multiplayer. I've never seen so much teamplay in an online environment. Gang Wars really does seem to bring pub games together. Nothing like watching one team get completely worked for the first 2 rounds, only for them to band together and pull out the win by the end.

I wish people in CoD and BF3 would learn that valuable lesson, but the point systems in those games(save for BF3) is inherently one sided towards players who are better at killing. Another thing people need to steal from Rockstar is tMP3's point system. You have no idea how many times I've seen guys with 30+ kills, easily the most in the game you're playing, end up in the bottom middle of the scoreboard. While the guys defending objectives, capturing territory, and running the bags end up at the top with an assload of points and only 10 - 15 kills.

xbox live should have a server-side function where if someone gets reported for harassment they could mute the player and the player couldnt communicate to anyone for 1 week, or month or some kind of 3-strikes and your out. they can still play, but no one can hear them and the only way to get around that is a LAN connection so they are only speaking to people on their friends list.

i think it would go a long way to regulating the language without totally killing interest in players playing.

They're trolls, they wont change. Even if you ban them.

Banning them only accomplishes a few things.

MS loses out on their XBL subscription money
Troll just gets agitated, but has probably been banned before
They return to the status quo as soon as their ban wears off.

So to counter that, repeat offenders get hardware banned after awhile. Which MS is extremely hesitant to issue these days. Why?

People sold their hardware banned consoles on craigslist without telling the buyer that their console is worthless online. MS, assuming that these people were the banned users trying to work the system, refused to unban said console.

The troll would then take the money from the sale of their now banned console, to purchase a clean console, and continue on like nothing happened.

Moral of the story: It does not matter what medium you're talking about. Trolls will exist, and they will refuse to change. Empower the player with tools to ignore them, and get over it. Save the bans for things you can't properly control. Like system tampering, cheating, etc. A mouthy 13 year old is hardly worth the time.

None of it means anything in a pub.

Mike Chewbacca: There are a lot of butthurt guys in here whining about how those mean ol' women get angry when they're called sexist terms.

Do you think we don't say that shiat to even our best friends during competition? The difference is, we don't take it personally when someone tells us to cut ourselves with a razor blade then swim in a pool full of Magic Johnson's blood.

For the record, I don't play games online and have no idea what goes on there. I'm just saying that's what we do playing video games.

The Flexecutioner: xbox live should have a server-side function where if someone gets reported for harassment they could mute the player and the player couldnt communicate to anyone for 1 week, or month or some kind of 3-strikes and youre out. they can still play, but no one can hear them and the only way to get around that is a LAN connection so they are only speaking to people on their friends list.

i think it would go a long way to regulating the language without totally killing interest in players playing.

Sgt Otter: You know how "Juggal0_Sn1p3r_420" was "sexually harassing" you by screaming at you to suck his dick? Here's a secret. Those assholes do that to everyone who scores on them. Just mute his ass and move on.

I'd appreciate it if you guys didn't advertise my handle on forums. Thanks.

Do I detect the bittersweet scent of masculine panic? Hysterical misogyny is usually a giveaway. I wonder what's troubling them?

jst3p: Strategeryz0r: lennavan: jst3p: PanicMan: lennavan: You've never played random pickup internet games ever, have you? I know you imagine it to be all "Watch your right flank." and "Smoke grenade the room on 3...2...1..." But really it's all nonsense and smack talk. I know you imagine the only way to communicate online is with your own voice. But really lots of games have built in sayings so you can push a button and everyone on your team hears "Grenade!" It has been this way since the beginning of time.

I have and it sucks. But it could be great, if people actually stopped being assholes. Teams that communicate dominate.

Who cares about dominating in a pub?

As a follow-up - who cares about the team score in a pub?

You could get a thousand kills a game, but if you lose the game you still suck. Kills mean nothing in the face of victory or defeat. Whether it's a pub or an organized competition. Maybe not to you, but it does to me. I'm very competitive. When it comes to team baesd games, all I care about is getting the W. Even if my own KDR sucks.

Which is why I gravitate more towards games where the individual can have more impact on the overall outcome. Counter-Strike comes to mind. In a pub environment a single skilled player could change the course of the entire game. Same with MP3. But stuff like BF3 where it's so heavily team oriented you have no choice but to work together to win? All it takes is one bad round before I throw in the towel for pub games.

Everyone has their own things they care about. Most people are selfish pricks in team games, only caring about their KDR. Hence why pub games for CoD suck ass. If more people cares about who wins or loses, rather than their personal position on the scoreboard, you'd find a better gaming experience. God bless the Live party system, otherwise I wouldn't touch games that require heavy team work. Ever.

Try Ghost Recon Future Soldier. Objectives outweigh Kills by more than ten to one. Deathmatchers are ALWAYS at the bottom of the lists as long as someone is going for the objectives.

Had it not come out so close to Max Payne 3, and so close to Esthetic Evolution, I would already own it. GR: FS is one I've watched pretty closely. I'm hoping to score a cheap copy of it second hand.

It doesn't have one of those lame ass online passes does it?

Yes.. yes it does. And my soul weeps that I bought one. However, I got a used copy pretty cheap, and with the 10 surcharge I still saved money... but damn, I'm on your side on this. Good luck finding any games now that DON'T have this pass thing.

Well I guess my group of friends is more mature than yours, because while we do talk a bit of smack, it's generally nothing worse than "Oh man, I totally just OWNED you!" or something to that effect. I guess none of us find rape to be funny.
