Guy gamers are not well known for their manners. They are not fully socialized as the rest of society. I feel pity upon those lost souls

You know how "Juggal0_Sn1p3r_420" was "sexually harassing" you by screaming at you to suck his dick? Here's a secret. Those assholes do that to everyone who scores on them. Just mute his ass and move on.

Scary? No. Stupid? Yes. It runs in parallel with that Greater Internet Dickwad Theorem.

Exactly. It doesn't happen because you are a woman. It happens because you're either getting your ass kicked, or pissing him off by kicking his ass.

Having attended LAN parties weekly for several years, I can tell you the same language happens amongst close friends and in person as well.

The close friends arent the issue. Its the creepy internet stalkers that are scary.

The thing is "Juggal0_Sn1p3r_420" wont let it go. He will continue to harass you through PM and even reroll or start a whole new account to continue harassing you. He will become obsessed.

I do not understand why gamer girls would let the xbox live trolls get to them. Most of the girls I've seen online actually play pretty good. So for starters they are beating the dickheads at their own hobby that they spend every waking moment they are not jerking off doing. Secondly the words off these miscreants only prove the only bare tit they have ever seen and are likely to see for a very long time belong to their mom or sister. So they beat them at their own game and have cheap and easy shot at the little knuckle draggers oh so fragile sexuality. As usual in real life the girls really do have all the power.

I for one mute just about every one of the racist, misogynistic little jerk offs and mute them faster than I ignore fark trolls. Seriously people STOP letting your children play adult games!!! I've heard kids that honestly sound like they are 5-8 years old on COD and Battlefield. WTF are you thinking?

Sexual harassment from a group that will very likely never even have sex

2012-06-04 11:14:39 AM
I am so glad I found a great little community online where I can go and satisfy my online gaming needs. No one there is an asshole! And we're all kinda old and suck at video games, so we concentrate more on the "having fun" part than the "winning" part. Good times.

Except that little POS kid in Whiterun.

Nobody gets banned, MS wants their $50 "Gold" fee.

2012-06-04 11:22:27 AM
In the rare occasions when I play with random people on Xbox Live, I sometimes wonder what I'm missing out on by having chat disabled. I found that it's not worth it to know. Same reason I don't play MMO's; too many people trying harder to ruin it for everyone else than play.

2012-06-04 11:23:41 AM
This is why I can't play on Live or PSN. Every single game is filled with psychotic teens who scream and cuss insults if you're beating them, and scream and cuss insults if they're beating you. I tried playing with no mic or chat sounds, and then you'll get the idiots who will kick a player from their hosted game for not using the chat or headset. It's more fun just to play alone.
I weep for the day when these morons enter the workforce.

2012-06-04 11:24:18 AM
Someone is butthurt because an on-line stranger harassed them?
Wut?
Are these the same girls that go out to clubs wearing the slinkiest little outfit with their tits and ass hanging out and get pissed when guys start staring and hitting on them?

See, people have to remember that when you're on chat playing a multiplayer game, you're essentially on the Internet. And the same rules apply... possibly even moreso because you're dealing with the same demographic that take up most of 4chan and/or youtube comments. The mouthbreathers, the basement dwellers, the 13 year olds with the summer off with nothing better to do than drink Mountain Dew and yell at their TV.

You either mute them, mock them, or join a different channel. You are forced to deal with some of the most socially retarded bottom dwellers living, they are equal opportunity, and you ladies will just have to learn to deal with them like the 90% of the rest of gaming culture do. Do not get scared away because of them... the smallest minority are always the loudest.

People are dicks on the Internet, this is Rick Romero reporting.

The social justice wank in "gaming" that has pervaded the scene over the last couple years is pretty fascinating, though. The flood that burst the damn was the now-infamous "Dickwolves" incident (which was instigated by a blogger who is known for being unreasonable even amongst Internet Feminist Bloggers), but hardly a day goes by where either some Internet activist is writing up some article on yet-another-inequality in gaming, or some white-knight Internet "journalist" on a Gawker site is trying to look enlightened by explaining to male gamers why they're bad people.

Very intriguing.

Another website, Fat, Ugly or Slutty, posts examples of harassment from all games - mostly pictures of in-game messages that women receive from other gamers.

Thanks subby. I had no idea this site existed but it is hilarious!

"Get back in the kitchen and take your goddamn hands off a video game controller."

I love the unspoken assumption that sitting on a couch playing soldier is somehow intrinsically macho.

So the easily outraged folks expect the chronically developmentally arrested cheetos and underpants crowd to be respectful to women when even allegedly grown-up educated people have trouble doing that very thing?

Hilarious.

Honest Bender: It's called trash talking. You didn't get insulted because you're a precious little female snowflake. You got insulted because that's part of the culture of online gaming. Get over yourself.

Possibly, but there are two responses I have. One is that the culture of online gaming does that MORE towards female gamers, both in terms of quantity of offensive remarks and quality of them. Two is that this is not an element I would like associated with any subculture I am a part of. I don't mind a little trash talk. But resorting to threats, out and out raging, and constant streams of unrelenting tirades because someone was marginally better than you at a task designed to be entertaining is nonsense. I want no part of it anymore because it's immature and repulsive behavior. That it's also a swamp of overt sexism and misogyny (as well as homophobia) just makes it that much worse, and I truly feel bad for any decent person - man or woman - who wants to be a part of it.

But that's the rub. More and more decent people need to get involved. Good sportsmanship needs to be modeled, and appropriate trash talking (that doesn't lead to telling people you want them murdered and/or raped) needs to be demonstrated. The other crap should not be tolerated, at all. So I keep going with it. And I want others who are interested in gaming online to keep with it as well. I respond to raging children and teenagers and adults who don't seem to understand that it's just a game. Because this kind of problem doesn't go away if you handwave it away as just part of that world. It may be, but it shouldn't be. And it doesn't go away just because that pervasive element of the world drives away genuinely decent people who just want to have fun.

Because, unfortunately for me, while I don't engage in that kind of bullsh*t, it's part of the culture I'm a part of. So I have to take some responsibility for it. And the last thing I want is for mainstream stereotypes of gamers as antisocial dicks to be any truer than they need to be. We don't need another Jack Thompson-esque figure on our ass trying to ban video games because they teach people to be hateful little sh*ts. It would be nice if, when such a person comes around, we can genuinely respond to those accusations by pointing out that it doesn't. As it stands now, unfortunately, we can't say that honestly.

I'm glad they mentioned the Extra Credits bit. A big chunk of the problem is Xbox live. It's an intellectual wasteland.

This is the reason why I turned off XBOX live.

I'd want to do street racing, (project gotham2), and while I'm racing, some 12 year old, who thinks the headset is for his own personal radio broadcast is constantly talking, whooping, moaning, howling and cursing or telling lame jokes.

That, and the incessant, "Do you want to play Cat and Mouse?". Essentially a game of TAG with the cars.

NO, I want to race around Tokyo, Nurburging, or whatever, as fast as I can without the endless infantile chattering and the inane stupid side games like "Cat and Mouse".

/no longer an XBOX live member
//isn't even interested in XBOX360 for that reason.

This is often true. Sometimes, often, actually, it's not. There are lots of times when the tone switches the moment people find out a player is female. The attacks go from the usual trashtalk to female-specific, acute, angry stuff.

And to be frank, I think it might be worth it to tell everyone to tone it down anyway. We're not all hormone-ravaged aspies. Sometimes we can keep the trashtalk friendly and competitive, not angry and vicious.

Just because a culture has a component doesn't mean the component can't or shouldn't change.

So much this. I was playing muted ten years ago on Counter Strike. Only used the mic in clan games. 'Follow me' and 'hold this position' was all I ever needed any way :p

Agreed, we should never expect people, especially anonymous people, to behave civilly. Further, it is right and good to further harass those that complain of said uncivil behavior, by speculating on their generally sluttish yet also prudish behavior, which although not directly experienced by the speculating peanut gallery, would potentially be very frustrating to them if true, and therefor makes us very angry. So stop being such stuck up biatch already.

Absolutely this. As soon as a game starts I mute every person with a headset icon.

I do not have this problem when playing a PC game. The mouth breathers must stick solely to consoles.

see, this i don't get... why not just hit the mute button? it takes all of 5 seconds. most of the games allow you to auto mute from the outset and even if they don't you can just plug your headset in, click the mute button on your end, and its defacto muted everyone and they still think you're plugged in.

Why are they talking about gamers here when tfa article is about people who use xboxes?

2012-06-04 11:40:30 AM
I am so outraged at this one. Why can we not control random anonymous internet people? We should start suing random anonymous internet assholes for acting as such. Further, I hate that requirement in online video games that requires you to identify yourself as male or female. What's up with that? Finally, as a male I'm glad to know I've never been the victim of online verbal abuse or harassment. Why, when I played WoW, the entire raid was kind and respectful as I made stupid mistakes tanking bosses because they knew I was a guy.

It is pointless to try and singlehandedly change entire demographics of folks by complaining that they're not being nice. It's like complaining that punks are surly or goths are weepy.

I get it, some female gamers don't want to deal with it. Guess what, some of us male gamers don't want to either, so we don't. We mute them, or play single player, or only play with known friends.

Or, I guess, we write about it on the BBC?

She's playing a team game, where communication is important. Note that the issue is people ON HER OWN TEAM doing this. And yes women get harassed differently than men.

Why is it women can not simple hit a mute button or change the channel? They always have to go on the news and cry about this and that and act like attention whores over everything.

My assumption is that there's a higher incidence of poorly parented preteens running around on consoles... they don't have the cash to set up a gaming PC, but they did con a console out of their parents.

To anyone on x-box live angry about the trolls they encounter. Might I recommend you do one of the following.

1) Mute them - is this really that hard? I mean seriously..

2) Block communication - hey it mutes them, disables their ability to friend request you, and stops them from PM'ing you? Dear god it's like they built in a way to filter out assholes!

3) Submit player feedback and tag them as an avoided player - prevents you from playing with them again. I've never run into a single person I flagged as an avoided player ever again.

4) FIGHT BACK! - You do realize the common x-box live troll is a simpleton with the intellectual capacity of a common house fly right? And that verbally assaulting them right back more often than not will get them to shut up once they realize you're better at the game than they are, you're smarter than they are, and you talk trash better than they do. Hell 90% of my negative feedback came from trolls pissed off that I made an example of them. Either by making it a point to absolutely ruin their gaming experience(I love a good griefing), or by ruining their gaming experience and then mercilessly abusing them verbally. The troll may not be an animal you can tame, but it is one you can exert dominance over.

5) Get a solid group of friends to play with - Start a FARK x-box live group, or whatever your preferred online community is. It's not tough to get enough people to play private matches with, or just party chat it up so you don't hear the rest of the world.

And just like that, the problem of online harassment has been solved. You can all thank me later :P.

At least you don't get rude, crude, and ignorant remarks, hurled at you.
