(Examiner)   Artie Lange says he was never officially fired from the Howard Stern Show, it was just the heroin addiction and repeatedly stabbing himself with a kitchen knife in the gut that pushed him off. Baba Booey   (examiner.com) divider line 55

I quit listening to the show after he left cause he was my favorite character. I honestly thought most of his issues were just radio drama but it seems that stuff was real all along. Damn, Artie, you were entertaining but you probably shouldn't have fallen asleep during most of the show.

For some reason I thought he was dead. Maybe because he's a part of those Comedy Central Roasts and that show is more cursed than the set of Poltergeist. Or maybe I can see a week in to the future.

Huh.

I came to post almost the exact same thing. He was great on the show, and I miss him. And he did seem to fall asleep all the time.

There was that one time near the end where Artie totally flipped out when Howard did a "Hot Chicks That Like Fat Guys" stunt directed at him. I just figured it was a goof at the time but in retrospect I'm thinking that was real. He didn't seem to understand that he was a Fat Guy and when Howard called him "Bro" well, oof.

Lange now states that he wasn't actually attempting suicide with the self-mutiliation, but rather was so unbalanced and desperate to get high, he convinced himself that losing a large amount of blood would make him feel all nice and floaty.

So did it make you feel all nice and floaty?

I hadn't heard Howard in years, and then i had a rental car with Sirios or XM or whatever. It was good to hear the gang but it was the same shiat. Howard staging fights between on-air staff (richie the limo driver vs. benjy, then they had some kind of secret audio tape of someone trashing robin and then robin confronting the guy who denied it, then they played the tape, then some weird story where someone stole robin's bra from her dressing room) and so on. it got old mega quick.

2012-06-04 11:37:03 AM
The whole "bro" thing was silly, but if you've listened enough to the HSS w/Artie, you know his blow ups were over little things, but later you find out his anger was from something deeper. When that went down, you could hear in his voice he was sincerely upset about it.

And yes, I very rarely listen these days since he's no longer on the show. He was without a doubt funnier than Jackie in that chair.

Howard and Robin refuse to talk about the situation leading up to that last break where Artie stabbed himself. At first Howard used the "I'm in such shock, I don't want to talk about it" card, but after Artie showed up in the public eye again and wanted to come back on the show to tell his side of things, Howard as changed gears to a very defensive stance, and changing the subject when callers ask about things.

I think at that last point, Artie was on the H again, calling in sick, and the big bosses at Sirius were going to force Howard's hand, so they sent him home indefinitely, which of course depressed Artie, and then he attempted suicide.

I think there are things that happened that Howard doesn't want to come to light, so he's keeping Artie away from the show.

But they need him, he was the one element that made everyone else laugh, and without that, it's just droning on about topics. Hell when Jim Breuer comes in, and Howard is laughing his arse off, the show is better.

It's gotten really bad lately....REALLY bad. Though there was one bright spot recently where Ronnie (the limo driver) would let Richard Christie blow him if they each got $1 million net. So that sparked some funny as shiat discussions on sponsors and characterizing who was/wasn't gay.

For me that show jumped the shark a few years back when he married someone his daughter's age.

now I RTFA. But a confrontation with Howard would be great.

i heard the show about a year ago.....no idea how it is now. but yeah. it all seemed staged. and whether it was or not, it was the same shiat from when he was on terrestrial. the names changed, but the shtick didn't.

the show sheet:

1. stage fight between baba booey and robin (10 minutes, if it works, go longer)
2. stage fight between benjy and artie
3. trash leno for 5 minutes
4. have the limo driver in-studio, belittle him, goad him into a fight
5. stage fight between artie and baba booey
6. take phone calls about robin's big black tits
7. stage fight between benjy and limo guy
8. Wrap up show

I dont know if someone posted it to Youtube yet, it was from the end of April/early May. It started as a joke on who Ronnie would think would be more likely to give him a BJ, he picked Benjy, then in the wrap up show, Richard said he'd do it for 1 million, and it just got really dark in terms of the tone from the other staffers, that was the part that had me laughing, which is far from what normally is going on these days.

Yeah I know Howard's gonna bombard listeners with AGT, I don't care about that, it's just that the show is starting to get older (which is obvious), so hearing about a 60 year old's big black tits isn't appealing anymore.

When Artie was there, cutting off callers "Ok buddy, thanks for calling, take care" and hammering High Pitch and Eric the Midget, it was so funny. Now it's Howard being bombarded by Wack Packers asking for money and favors.

I tune in to CrystalOne from time to time to catch the good stuff.

That's because Jackie didn't tell the jokes. He wrote them down and passed them to Howard, which is what his job was. Artie didn't do that.

If anything I miss Artie because of his legendary fights with Crazy Angry Alice. It also amazes me that people slam the show for being "fake" or "staged". OF COURSE IT IS! IT'S A SHOW! I can't imagine how boring it would be if they didn't set up conflict from time to time. All we would hear about is AGT and the Hamptons.

From her IMDB trivia section:

Was cremated after her death. Her friend, Chaunce Hayden brought her cremated remains onto Howard Stern's radio show and Howard rattled her bones and played with her ashes over the air. Debbie's family later sued Stern for the stunt. Stern settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

...OK, terrific.

had a love / hate view of Artie.

he was funny as hell, like "that guy" in high school: drunk and fat and hilarious.

but it's very difficult to have an ounce of sympathy for that twit.

PROTIP ARTIE: your life was enhanced x 1000000000 by joining Howard's show. but all you did was piss and moan??? fark you pal. people would kill to get paid to hang with Howard & all you could do was F it up??

and now i'm supposed to feel sorry for your worthless hide?

I don't think it warrants some huge conspiracy. Despite his general air of 'I'm deliberately being an asshole in as many ways as I can manage and I've invented 3 new ones today' Howard is still just a person. He could simply not want any of that stuff to come up because it IS painful for him. Work with someone long enough and you'll get attached, even if you hate each other most of the time, seeing someone addicted to Heroin, failing to quit multiple times, and attempting suicide could just be so unpleasent he honestly doesn't want to talk about it.

I honestly haven't ever found Howard all that funny. The radio show never played in my area, so that's probably a big part, but I watched the show a few times and it was mostly for the titilation (strippers, porn stars, etc.), but I was a little town teenager. Maybe I have him to thank for the one radio show I've ever liked (Russ Martin Show, DFW), in some fashion. But overall, what has he added to radio? It's all still sanitized top 40s pre packaged Seacrest. No real people or shows.

Everyone was like, oh, well, when he comes to terms with his grandmother's death, he'll be OK.

Then everyone was like, oh well, when he comes to terms with being gay, he'll be OK.

Then his dad died while on a trip to see him and I just gave up.

Coming out of the closet, all of stunts they've done.... nothing's helped.

When Fez DOES talk, it's about gay issues, and Fez gets very black/white on the issue, refusing to debate the issue and always taking a massive extreme stance.

So Ron suggests Fez doing stuff on OutQ. Fez immediately rejects that idea, because "he likes it [on the O&A channel] and that OutQ would reject him."

I'm in the same group here. A friend of mine convinced me to spend the extra $3 for the XM package on Sirius. Hadn't listed to O&A in years. It's been great hearing them again. I couldn't take Howard's AGT talk anymore. His show needs an Artie in the studio full time. Hell, they could put Shuli in the room and it would be an improvement.

Well considering that one is from NY and the other is from Boston, that is certainly shocking.

I know that being I'm from Boston originally, I don't mind it. I like sports radio that isn't afraid to talk about things other than sports and not pump dumb stats at my ear holes the whole time.
